Review: "I Heart You" Video
A few hours ago, Toni Braxton released the music video to accompany her latest single “I Heart You.” Where do I begin without shading anyone or being too harsh?
Let’s start with the director…Bille Woodruff. Bille Woodruff is a very talented and successful film and music video director. He has directed phenomenal videos in the past for Toni including the iconic “Unbreak My Heart” video as well as those for “You’re Makin’ Me High” and “He Wasn’t Man Enough.” Over the years, he and Toni have built a strong working relationship and a genuine friendship. In my opinion, Billie just does not direct well under budget constraints (see “Hands Tied”, “Yesterday”, and “Make My Heart”).
It is understandable that Toni does not have a big video budget since she is currently an independent artist. However, there are many fantastic low budget music video productions…if you find the right director. For example, some of pop/dance singer Wynter Gordon’s videos are extremely low budget and very simple, but the fact that they are is masked in excellent lighting & artsy post-production/editing effects (Exhibit A & B). An artist’s music video for their first single should be damn near perfection especially when that artist is attempting to make a comeback. Maybe Toni should have went with an amateur director.
(Click here to see an example of a post-production effect & lighting created by moi. P.S. I am not a director)
Sometimes less is more… The scenes with the freestyle club dancers could have definitely been left on the cutting room floor. Funds spent on dancers should have WITHOUT A DOUBT been used elsewhere. The video was sort of all over the place.
I loved the opening scene with Toni and her love interest. Toni looked very youthful and sexy yet classy. As for the rest of the video, all that I could think about was…
Who in the heeeellll’s idea was this? This is giving me Kelis circa 2010 vibes. The makeup was also off and made all of the “headdress” scenes unflattering.
Overall, I rate Toni Braxton’s “I Heart You” video 2.5/5.0 stars and one of those stars is given because I really, really love the single.

What's your ultimate fave Toni track, Vindrag?Vindrag wrote:Secrets was a great album. My brother played it all the time. And I just had to purchase "I Don't Want To" for my retro folder.
I'm not a fan of her albums so the tracks I like the most are the obvious ones. I watched the new video, I Heart You (I think that's the right title) and I quite liked it! Her voice is very smooth. And the track had an old school vibe.GetBack wrote:I hope you like her new album!Vindrag wrote:I'm not a fan of her albums so the tracks I like the most are the obvious ones. Couldn't help but notice that the first row on left hand side is incorrect. They out the loser photo instead of the winners photo
