Weekend Report: 'Wrath,' 'Mirror' No Match for 'Hunger Games'

by Ray Subers

The Hunger Games

April 1, 2012

Box office phenomenon The Hunger Games was once again the undisputed champ this weekend, as it had little difficulty fending off unimpressive fantasy flicks Wrath of the Titans and Mirror Mirror. With that strong holdover performance, and two newcomers combining for over $50 million, the Top 12 earned an estimated $145 million (a 27 percent improvement over the same period last year).

The Hunger Games fell 60 percent to an estimated $61.1 million this weekend. That ranks as the seventh-highest second weekend ever, though it fell behind Avatar, Spider-Man and Alice in Wonderland among non-sequels. Still, that drop was lighter than the decline for any of the Twilight movies that opened on a Friday including the first one, which lost 62 percent in its second weekend.

The sci-fi book adaptation is expected to pass $250 million on Sunday, which makes it the fifth-fastest movie to ever reach that milestone (first among non-sequels). Through just 10 days in theaters, The Hunger Games has earned $251 million, and it could be on track for a final tally around $350 million.

Wrath of the Titans debuted in second place with an estimated $34.2 million. That's a little over half as much as Clash of the Titans made on its opening weekend two years ago ($61.2 million), though there was fair reason to expect such a steep drop-off. Clash may have earned a ton of money, but two years later it's widely considered a misfire of epic proportions (it has a terrible 5.8 rating on IMDb, where users are fairly lenient on fantasy fare). The sequel's marketing essentially promised more of the same, with the main differences being the length of star Sam Worthington's hair and the substitution of a random fire monster in place of the more recognizable Kraken. Not surprisingly, that wasn't enough to get moviegoers to forget about Clash and to get excited about another trip to Ancient Greece.

Distributor Warner Bros. Pictures is reporting that the audience was 66 percent male and 55 percent over the age of 25, and they awarded the movie a decent "B+" CinemaScore. 3D presentations accounted for 65 percent of the gross; included within that figure is $4.7 million from IMAX (or 14 percent of the weekend tally).

2012's first Snow White movie Mirror Mirror opened to an estimated $19 million from 3,603 theaters. That's generally in the same league as Bridge to Terabithia ($22.6 million) and The Spiderwick Chronicles ($19 million), though it's only half of Hop's $37.5 million debut on the same pre-Easter weekend last year. The movie did at least crush past similarly-timed family movies Nim's Island ($13.2 million) and The Last Mimzy ($10 million), though that's not exactly a resounding endorsement.

Mirror Mirror's slight underperformance can be attributed at least in part to a challenging release date. While the movie is geared toward 6-12 year-old girls and their parents, that's not a huge market segment. To really break out, it needed to reach a broader segment of women (teenagers and 20-somethings), and those moviegoers are still buying up tickets en masse for The Hunger Games. The movie could at least be in for a solid multiple, though, considering nearly all children are getting some time off this week for the Easter holiday and there's nothing targeting the same group until at least Chimpanzee on April 20 (The Three Stooges is also rated PG, but it's hard to imagine young girls getting worked up over it).

Relativity reports that 60 percent of the audience was families with children 12-and-under, and 74 percent of those children were girls. Ethnically, the audience break-down was 52 percent Caucasian and 20 percent Hispanic, and they gave the movie a "B+" CinemaScore.

21 Jump Street dipped just 27 percent to an estimated $15 million this weekend. So far, the TV adaptation has earned an impressive $93.1 million, and it's on its way to crossing $100 million sometime next weekend.

Dr. Seuss' The Lorax rounded out the Top Five with an estimated $8 million. Remarkably, it only fell 39 percent from last weekend despite facing direct competition from Mirror Mirror. So far, the Illumination Entertainment production has grossed $189.6 million, and it will likely pass $200 million by the end of Easter weekend.

John Carter plummeted 61 percent to just over $2 million, and has now made a paltry $66.2 million at the domestic box office. Unfortunately, international has slowed down substantially as well, and the mega-budget sci-fi epic will likely wind up grossing less than $300 million worldwide.

After three weeks in very limited release, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen expanded to 483 locations and took seventh place with an estimated $1.27 million. The movie has now made $3.17 million, and distributor CBS Films does have plans to roll it out to more markets in coming weeks.

Controversial documentary Bully opened to an estimated $115,000 from five theaters for a solid $23,000 per-theater average. That's a fine figure, but it's going to take a lot more than that for the movie's box office grosses to live up to the ridiculous amount of coverage it's received over the past month.

Glad to see that The Hunger Games is smashing worldwide, hopefully this means that Mockingjay and Catching Fire are both made into films.

^That's not the weekly box office, it's the weekend box office - slightly different. The weekly totals are revealed later in the week.

UK Weekend Top Ten March 30th - April 1st 2012

http://www.mymovies.net/charts/default. ... UK&s=1&n=3

The Hunger Games is still winning its fight at the UK Box Office seeing off competition from Pirates! and Wrath Of The Titans in its fight to the death.

Taking another £2.9 million, the post–apocalyptical film stayed comfortably in the top spot for the second week running.

Wrath Of The Titans gave a good fight, pulling in £2.1 million in ticket sales this weekend and landing in second, while The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists came in at third with a haul of booty only £16,000 less than Wrath.

Cop comedy 21 Jump Street moved down two ranks to fourth to make way for the new releases while Streetdance 2 popped and locked to premiere in fifth with a disappointing £608,000.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel extended its stay in the charts but moved from third to sixth, while The Devil Inside slithered from fourth to seventh.

Matt Damon‘s We Bought A Zoo and Mark Wahlberg‘s Contraband brought up the rear of the charts in eighth and ninth respectively, while Into The Abyss found itself in a black hole at number ten.
1 1 The Hunger Games
2 NEW Wrath Of The Titans
3 NEW The Pirates! - In An Adventure With Scientists
4 2 21 Jump Street
5 NEW StreetDance 2
6 3 The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
7 4 The Devil Inside
8 5 We Bought A Zoo
9 6 Contraband
10 NEW Into The Abyss

Amazing to see Werner Herzog's prison documentary enter the top ten - though his Death Row series currently on Channel 4 is fascinating and must have helped. Herzog's Grizzly Man doc was also very popular and well worth watching.

Weekend Report: 'Hunger Games' Three-peats, Passes $300 Million Over Easter

by Ray Subers

The Hunger Games

April 8, 2012

Despite the entrance of two competitive titles to the marketplace over Easter Weekend, box office phenomenon The Hunger Games had little difficulty taking the top spot for the third-straight frame. American Reunion opened in second place, though its debut doesn't compare favorably to earlier series entries, while Titanic 3D wound up on the low-end among 3D re-releases. The Top 12 earned an estimated $117 million this weekend, which is up 14 percent from the same period last year but off a bit from Easter 2011 (which was later in the month).

The Hunger Games dropped 43 percent to an estimated $33.5 million. That's the seventh-highest second weekend of all-time, and it's the best since Alice in Wonderland in March 2010. Based on Lionsgate's projections, the movie will pass $300 million on Easter Sunday, which is only its 17th day in theaters. That's the sixth-fastest pace ever, and it ranks second behind Avatar among non-sequels. Its estimated $302.8 million total is more than the final tally of all of the Twilight movies and all but two of the Harry Potter flicks. Based on its current trajectory, The Hunger Games should end up with at least $350 million.

American Reunion took second place with an estimated $21.5 million from 3,192 locations. That's much lower than the opening weekend for American Pie 2 ($45.1 million) and American Wedding ($33.4 million), and it's even noticeably off from the original American Pie in estimated attendance. Still, it didn't drop quite as far from its predecessor as Scream 4, which was last April's attempt at resuscitating a long-dormant franchise for a fourth outing.

There are plenty of possible reasons for American Reunion's underwhelming debut. Women may have been distracted a bit by The Hunger Games and Titanic 3D, which earned over $50 million combined. Also, Easter weekend can be a tough time to open an R-rated movie—American Reunion's $21.5 million is actually the best R-rated Easter debut since Panic Room a decade ago. In comparison, the first three American Pie movies were all released in the Summer, which is prime real estate for raunchy R-rated fare.

While timing surely played a role, the bigger problem was probably with the brand itself. While the first three American Pie movies played a part in establishing the model for risqué sex comedies in the new century, they haven't really held up that well (when the average person is asked what they think of American Pie, the standard response seems to be: "I liked the first one, but the sequels? Not so much.") Also, after seeing ads for cheesy direct-to-video spin-offs for the better part of the last decade, people were probably less likely to pay much attention to the ads for American Reunion. Those spin-offs were meant to prolong the brand, but in doing so they also wound up diluting it a bit.

Universal is reporting that 61 percent of the audience was 25 years of age or older, and it also skewed slightly male (51 percent). They awarded the movie a solid "B+" CinemaScore, which doesn't really give a strong indication regarding word-of-mouth.

Yeah - they count UK, Ireland and Malta(??) together, too!

It looks as if there‘s no beating The Hunger Games, as it has stayed at the top of the US charts for the third week running having surpassed the $300million mark in takings.

It‘s not as though it was without competition either, as American Reunion opened in second position, with $21.5 million, which is good but doesn‘t compare to earlier movies in the series.

The reason could possibly be that it turned out that most people did want to see Titanic in 3D, even though they all know how it ends, as the Paramount picture sunk a hefty $17.2 million at the box office.

Sam Worthington‘s fight against the Titans dropped from second to fourth, while Mirror Mirror wasn‘t the fairest of them all in fifth and 21 Jump Street moved down to sixth.

Dr Seuss‘ The Lorax continued saving trees in seventh and Salmon Fishing In The Yemen‘s fishing expedition failed to gain any enthusiasm at eight.

Bringing up the rear in nine and ten were comedy Housefull 2 and John Carter.

Titanic 3D sails into top spot at UK box office

Fox’s re-release dethrones The Hunger Games with strong $4.4m (£2.8m) debut.

Not content with going 13 weeks at the top spot on its original release in 1998, Titanic enjoyed a triumphant return to the UK box office with a number one debut.

Fox’s 3D re-release enchanted its way to a $4.4m (£2.8m) opening to prevent The Hunger Games from a third consecutive week at the top of the chart. It follows in the success of the distributor’s recent 3D re-release of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, which has taken $8.4m (£5.3m) in the UK to date.

Combined with its original release, James Cameron’s epic has now grossed $113.5m (£71.7m) in the UK and is closing in on Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2’s $115.6m (£73.1m) haul to become the third biggest film of all time at the UK box office.

Despite falling a place to second, Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games continued its excellent run by adding a further $3.8m (£2.4m) in its third weekend.

Gary Ross’ adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ best-selling novel has overtaken the original Twilight’s final tally of $17.7m (£11.2m) and currently stands at $25.6m (£16.2m) in the UK, following a superb bank holiday Monday gross of $1.6m (£1.0m), and at a stunning $460m worldwide.

Bolstered by four days of previews - after opening on Monday - StudioCanal’s Mirror Mirror enjoyed a solid $3.8m (£2.4m) debut in the UK to chart third - although this position could alter when official figures are released.

The overall result is director Tarsem Singh’s best-ever opening in the UK, topping the $3.4m (£2.1m) achieved by Immortals last year although it’s worth noting that Immortals’ opening was solely a three-day weekend; Mirror Mirror’s estimated three-day weekend was $1.8m (£1.1m).

Sony’s The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists! enjoyed a 15% rise in its second week, adding $3.5m (£2.2m) for $12.4m (£7.8m) overall. The holdover is on par with Aardman’s previous effort Arthur Christmas which rose 9% for $3.6m (£2.3m) in its second week, and bodes well for an extended run for Pirates! in the UK.

Warner Bros’ sequel Wrath Of The Titans rounded off this week’s top five.

Vertigo’s StreetDance 2 has accumulated $3.4m (£2.2m) after adding $1.0m (£648,247) over the four-day Easter weekend.

This week sees saturation releases for Universal’s action sci-fi Battleship (opening April 11) and Lionsgate’s horror The Cabin In The Woods from cult favourites Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon. StudioCanal’s Delicacy and Chelsea Film Entertainment’s Blackthorn both receive limited releases.

Why isn't Titanic No1 in the US? :( Is No3 good for it? Almost 20 million sounds good.

I was so pissed when Avatar passed it as biggest earner of all times, Titanic deserves it so much, it's a story about real people not some animated fluff. :x

I was hoping it could reclaim it's throne with this 3D release. Is that possible? How much is Avatar ahead of it?

I'm shocked at how badly American Reunion performed. American Pie II opened with $45 million 11 years ago, and this opens with half that today? With inflation and everything, it means only about 1/3 the people who went to see the second one opening weekend wanted to revisit old friends.

Same thing happened last year with Scream 4.

Well...it doesn't seem funny anymore. For me, it's a group of young actors that used to be cool a decade ago but not anymore.

So true. Alyson Hannigan and Seann William Scott are the only ones who've really have any success in the past five years.

I said before and I stand by it (and it's probably why I'm waiting until it hits Redbox) that it's kind of bittersweet to accept and realize just how much time has passed. Do we really want to believe that Jim and Stifler and co. are now 31-32 year old characters? Yea, I'm the same age but still, you always think of them as 18-21 year olds

IKR. Avatar doesn't even have a proper plot, it was just about computer graphics. Urgh! I hate this movie. Titanic is so more iconic.

Titanic was only showing on 3 screens in my local multiplexes compared to multiple screens for THG. So the inflated 3D prices took it past THG. Slightly misleading but still a lot better than i thought it would do based on screen showings.

Still, Hunger's consistently drawing them in.

UK Weekend Top 10:

The re–release of Titanic in 3D has sunk The Hunger Games‘ domination of the UK Box Office top spot on its first week of release.

Titanic 3D sailed into first place with £2.8 million in takings while The Hunger Games speared an extra £2.3 million in ticket sales over the long weekend.

Not the fairest movie release of them all, Julia Robert‘s Mirror Mirror took a magical £2.3 million for third place while The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists walked the plank from third to fourth in its second week of release.

It was a titanic–esque move for Wrath Of The Titans as it slipped from second position to fifth in its second week in cinemas.

21 Jump Street hopped from fourth to sixth, while The Cold Light Of Day premiered at a disappointing seventh taking just £500,000 ahead of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel which carried on taking bookings at eight.

Dancing drama Streetdance 2 and comedy Housefull 2 took the ninth and tenth spot.

1 NEW Titanic (3D)
2 1 The Hunger Games
3 NEW Mirror Mirror
4 3 The Pirates! - In An Adventure With Scientists
5 2 Wrath Of The Titans
6 4 21 Jump Street
7 NEW The Cold Light Of Day
8 6 The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
9 5 StreetDance 2
10 NEW Housefull 2 - The Dirty Dozen

Indian sequel Housefull 2 doing well on both sides of the Atlantic.

I don't think the disappointment last weekend was Titanic, it was American Reunion. Titanic's already grossed a catrillion dollars and most everyone who likes the movie owns it on DVD already, what it makes now is just icing on the cake, while American Reunion is the long-awaited fourth installment of a franchise that was wildly popular and profitable in the late 90's and yet now there's no interest whatsoever in a revisit.

i just saw the first american pie, man it was damn funny

i think it s not just a lack of interest, this new film is not as good as the first one... if a movie is really great then people would see it no matter how long the break is, like Star Wars : Revenge of the Sith, Toy Story 3...
