I don't think that was the case in ex-YU, was it?
Well, I don't know, I was born after Yugoslavia fell apart, I should ask someone. :-?

Well, you agree that we can understand each others with exception of few words. :D

It doesn't matter anyway. :D

Talking about those languages (and this is completely irrelevant), I was out and about with a Serb friend of mine (I think that was in 1998 or 1999) and she heard two other girls talking in Serbian (she thought) so she goes to them, talks to them, the girls answered (in their language) and then they asked where is she from and when she said Serbia, the girls responded (in English) "Oh sorry we don't speak Serbian, we are from Croatia"... my friend was so pissed u can't imagine lol

Yeah, but it was the period right after the war so it is understandable (in a human kind of way).

But it's the same now :( Maybe even worse... Have you been here in past 3/4 years(for example)? I know that a lot of Serbs, when they go to Croatia, have to speak other language because people may attack them there. The same thing is about here in Serbia, i know a lot of people from Croatia, which i met on concerts, are afraid that they dont get attacked too... :-?

But still that's progress. When I was there (in Serbia), I couldn't visit Croatia because there was no public transport link among the two.

Yeah, I know, the things are a bit better now, but there's still alot of hate. I wouldn't be comftortable if I went there cause I know alot of people here who still are acting like the war happened a year ago. I mean, it's understandable, as war affected everyone's lives on both sides. It's gonna take alot more time for people to forget about it.

Something similar happened to me...
I was at EXIT festival and we needed wipes...
So I came to group of people and I asked them (on Serbian) if they speak Serbian. And the answer was "No, we speak Croatian" It was funny, cuz they were joking and everybody was laughing. :D
There was no hate in that joke...but yeah, there is a lot of hate even today. :-? :-?

How hard is it for you guys to learn English? Cyrillic is the alphabet you use right? I noticed that you can communicate in your native language using the latin alphabet too, I just find that very impressive. There are several languages that I would love to know (like Japanese or Greek), but I just can't see myself learning a whole new writing system :o

Well we only use latin alphabet here in Croatia and I think that in Serbia they use both latin and cyrillic.

I have lots of foreign friends who learn Greek and nobody has a problem with the alphabet or with talking but everybody has a problem with the grammar. Greek alphabet is different to latin but it is not that different to create problems by itself (like the alphabets of Asian languages). I guess the same is true with cyrillic alphabet

Yes, we use both cyrilic and latin, and we learn them both in school. :D

It's not that hard. As I already said, we use both latin and cyrillic, mainly chyrillic. ;)
And no, we don't have problems with english since it's not new writing system to us. :P

I went to modern Greek classes but I gave up cuz our teacher bearly knew serbian and he was sleeping during our classes   And also cuz I was lazy
I learned greek alphabet with no bigger problems, but I have forgot everything :-? so, as you said, different writing system is not that big problem, it's mainly about grammar.

Yeah, I know. English, French and Turkish use the same exact letters but they are extremely different languages in everything else. The way they form words, the grammar, the words themselves... so it is really not in the letters

As a Russian speaker I can say we use the cyrillic alphabet [latin only for social networks]. I remember a favourite joke during English classes at school was "English is a pain in the ass but imagine them doing a slavic language". English isn't taught very well at schools and people have trouble with pronunciation and speaking. I can understand about 30% of what Zdenek is saying [as well as Serby and Ukranians] but Polish and Croatian are already a mistery.

It's just so interesting that all these countries are so passionate to have their own language no matter what... You see MOST countries in Europe are into that....

Spanish, French, English, German, Italian, Danish, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Hungarian, Turkish, Greek, Macedonian, Serbian, Croatian, Montenegrian, Albanese, Ukranian, Russian, Bulgarian, Polish and Czhec... etc, etc...

Here in Latin America, Spanish here, Spanish there, Spanish for ever and ever... slightly differences in accents but it's the same...

I wonder if the internet information is enough for you guys or do you have to still learn English for certain information on the internet? I mean... technological stuff and world news and extremely technical topics... I don't think all of that is available for Finnish or Albanese... just wondering

I'd love my country to have a different language and alphabet :P !!! That'd make me feel unique in a certain way :P :P

It's because Europe has a longer history

That's a good point. There are no problems in bigger Countries as there are many ineternet users but definitely finding some techinical information in Finnish/Albanian/Slovakian is definitely harder than finding in it French/German/Italian ecc
