I used to really like Shake it off, Get your number and Migrate, but all of these are just okay now, so I guess I'm fine with the positions

leoapp wrote:Get Your Number - It's one of the catchiest songs on TEOM, it should've been released in US. I don't really love it, but it's great overall.

Alone In Love - It's a quite great ballad from her debut, a bit forgotten, it's not that strong compared to other ballads on the album though. The verses are great but the chorus really lacks of something.

Shake It Off - Very sad that this failed to hit #1, one of the strongest songs on TEOM, the beat is very catchy and memorable, but it's quite repetitive imo, so it's getting a bit boring after repetitious listen, maybe the song should've been shortened

Migrate - Definitely her most commercial non single she's ever made, How come they made a huge mistake by not releasing this as a single? A standout track from E=MC2, however i think T Pain's rap is a bit annoying and too long. And imo, this song is not as great as hyped, maybe less Mariah's robotic vocal and a faster tempo would be better. Mariah's part which says 'Hey' is so memorable though and the whistle at the beginning is flawless.

You're So Cold - The intro = the best intro among all Mariah's songs ever imo, so haunting, although overall the song is not that amazing, but easily the top non single on Emotions.
I agree with you on two points: (1) T-Pain really doesn't add anything to "Migrate". In fact, he takes away from the overall quality, at least in my opinion, and (2) "You're So Cold" has an epic intro, though the rest of the song doesn't quite live up to the promising start.

phoenix98 wrote:"Get Your Number" = eh...this one's not terrible, but I'm not a massive fan either. I'm glad it wasn't released here in the US, "Shake It Off" was perfect for the 3rd single. I think it's something about JD "singing" (rapping?) the whole hook that's off-putting to me. Mariah's bits are still catchy, though.

"Alone In Love" = like leoapp said, it's good but a bit forgettable when on the same album as ballads like "Vision Of Love", "Love Takes Time", "Vanishing", etc. I like it, but I wouldn't put it this high.

"Shake It Off" = I actually think this one is a bit low, I'd probably put it in my Top 40. apart from its general catchiness, it was a lot of fun watching it smash back in 2005 (although shocking/disappointing to see it blocked from the top spot not only by WBT, but also by the sudden explosion of "Gold Digger").

"Migrate" = I get that this would've been a hit, so I agree it should've been a single, but it's still a mess. some of the most embrassing lyrics of her entire career.

"You're So Cold" = I agree with leoapp about the epic-ness of the intro. not sure if I'd call it the top non-single on Emotions, I really like "To Be Around You" too, but this one is great too. maybe a little high, but still great.
Great. No major disagreements with this batch. :)

Tripolis wrote: "Get Your Number" : It's catchy, and definitely screams "hit" all over it, but it just isn't suited to my music taste. It's decent, though, but I guess you ranked it too high. 6/10

"Alone In Love" : Another filler track from her debut. It's by far the best of the fillers though... but pales very much in comparison to the rest of the album. 4/10

"Shake It Off" : A great choice for a single to continue her momentum. Deserved to hit #1 in the US as the video is great and the song is very catchy. I'm glad it became MiMi's second consecutive radio smash, though. 7.5/10

"Migrate" : One of my favourite tracks from "E=MC^2", and without a doubt, one of the most neglected songs (whereby it could've been released as a single) of her discography. Should she have released this instead of "Bye Bye" as the second single, the album could possibly be a hit. This tune is a smash. I'd ranked it in top 40. 8/10

"You're So Cold" : This track is mediocre and is underwhelming for Mariah's standards. "Emotions" is my least-favourite Mariah album, so that probably has a factor in me judging this song.. I'll have to listen to this again, but for now that's how I feel about it. 4/10
I'm shocked that you'd call "You're So Cold" mediocre! :o I hope it grows on you.

NothingFails wrote:You're So Cold is such early-90's epicness.
It's a great track, but "epic" is being a bit generous, in my opinion.

stevyy wrote:OOC is def. underrated. I always found the flute hypnotising.

Migrate and Side Effects are among the best songs she's done in the '00's.
I'm glad you like "O.O.C.". I really like the flute in that too. :)

Aw, if I put them higher that would mean that I'd have to rank songs I like more than them below them. :P

#45.

Circles.

Image

Fantastic R&B tune from Carey's comeback record, The Emancipation of Mimi. I just love how she sings "running around" in the chorus. Her voice sounds so strong here.

#44.

It's Like That.

Image

Widely hailed as Mariah's comeback single after a string of flop songs, "It's Like That" found Mariah charting in familiar territory again, peaking within the confines of the Top 10/20 in most nations. I really love the lyrics and the beat is so relaxing. It was the perfect lead single, in my opinion.

#43.

Can't Take That Away (Mariah's Theme).

Image

Due to it's limited release, this song wasn't quite the worldwide smash it had the potential to be. It did hit an impressive peak of #4 in Canada, though. The first half of the song is pretty slow but the second half is where Mariah showcases those powerful, hair-raising vocals of hers.

#42.

Standing O.

Image

Some lambs might say that I've given this track too generous a ranking but it's a really catchy track. Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel is one of those Mimi records I feel gets a lot of undeserved hate. That line, "So cheers, toast, bravo to you, 'cause you're the man of the hour, I'mma have to send you some flowers" is just so amazing. Should've been released as a single, in my opinion.

#41.

Through The Rain.

Image

Narrowly missing the Top 40 is the highest-ranking song from Charmbracelet, "Through The Rain". Thus, Charmbracelet becomes the very first Mimi record to have all of its tracks fall. Much like "Can't Take That Away (Mariah's Theme)", this track starts off pretty slow but it's the second half of the song where Mariah hits her stride and belts those powerful notes that I love so. I love the inspirational message of this track too. It's definitely a song to spin through tough times to remind yourself that you can "make it through the rain".

Circles - This is my 2nd favorite non single from TEOM after I Wish You Knew, although the melody is very simple, i think it's an amazing and her vocal is great and not forced.

It's Like That - One of her best lead singles and one of her best uptempo, the beat is just so strong and memorable. It really has THAT comeback feel, should've been a bigger in US imo.

Can't Take That Away (Mariah's Theme) - This song has very great message, and i like the final chorus, her belting notes acrobatic through the end. I used to underrate this song!

Standing O - The O O O part is very catchy actually, definitely one of the better songs on Memoirs. Although i think this ranks too high on your list.

Through The Rain - This song was what made me A LAMB! I really love it, among my TOP 3 All time favorite from Mariah. Great lyrics, and i love her whisper-ish vocal in this song. Just a perfect song to help people coping with their problems. Should've been a bigger hit especially in US where it flopped!

"Circles" : One of the best non-singles from "The Emancipation of Mimi", although I still think you ranked it a tad too high. It's great and should have been released as a single over "Get Your Number" imo. 7/10

"It's Like That" : This is easily one of Mariah's best lead-singles ever. It's definitely in my top 20. The beat is just fire and this really is a comeback tune. The video is also among Mariah's all-time best and deserved to be a much bigger hit in the US. Fantastic song. 9/10

"Can't Take That Away (Mariah's Theme)" : This is one of Mariah's best songs ever! It, without a doubt, would definitely make my top 10. I just love the message of the song and I love Mariah because of that. It's very underrated though and even though you ranked it at #43, I'm already happy because I know most lambs won't even rank this in their top 50 probably. 9.5/10

"Standing O" : One of the best Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel tracks. You ranked it too high, however. The chorus is very catchy and this is one of the songs I don't dislike on Memoirs. 6/10

"Through The Rain" :   Three of my favourites down in one batch! This song is one of Mariah's all-time bests and ranks definitely in my top 3 Mariah songs. The video is good for Mariah's standards and the lyrics are excellent. It's definitely my favourite lead single by Mariah and did not deserve to flop so badly in the US. My favourite song from her in the 2000s. 10/10

Good song, but there are better tracks on that record.

It's Like That
The beginning of an epic era for Mimi!

Can't Take That Away (Mariah's Theme)
This song is so emotional.

Standing O
Same as Circles.

Through The Rain
Another very touching ballad.

Can't Take That Away and Through The Rain are really outstanding songs in Mariah's discography... I fon't even know wheter a Top 50 position is good or bad on your chart, as there are so many masterpieces already left behinf

It's Like That... not like everyone else, I feel this is one of the poorer lead singles... as this song really had to grow on me, what saved that era for me was WBT

"Circles" = a bit high, but it's a nice track with some great lines: "but inside I kept repeating, 'don't you let them see you cry', so I casually turned my head, as the tears rolled down my eyes...".

"It's Like That" = I'm glad to see this isn't too high, though it wouldn't even make my Top 50  I'm obviously very thankful for what this track did for her career, but urban-club-jam-Mariah (this, "Migrate") just isn't my cup of tea. worse than gospel Mariah, actually.

"Can't Take That Away" = fans tend to overrate this one too, so I'm glad it isn't too high either.

"Standing O" = wow, way to throw us a curveball, Akini! I don't dislike this track by any means, but I don't think anyone expected to see it this high. I could see it being a good single choice, but I'm not sure if anything could've saved that era after IWTKWLI.

"Through The Rain" = a bit too low, but I'm glad we both consider it one of the best tracks on CB. I'd prolly rank "The One" above this, though.

#40.

Last Kiss.

Image

Though I prefer Taylor's "Love Story" to Mariah's, Mariah's "Last Kiss" easily trumps Taylor's. I love this funky, light-hearted R&B jam from E=MC². The line "Ain't no kiss gon' ever be our last kiss" is just delightfully optimistic.

#39.

Can't Let Go.

Image

Released as the second single off Carey's Emotions record, "Can't Let Go" narrowly missed the top spot in the US, peaking at #2. The song's lyrics are very relatable as we've all been in those friendships/relationships where we're aware that it's come to an end, yet we just "can't let go".

#38.

I've Been Thinking About You.

Image

This Music Box album track describes the story of my life! The track is strong throughout but my favourite line is in the chorus where Mariah sings, "I've been thinking about you in the most peculiar way" as when I first heard the track, that lyric caused me to raise my eyebrows until I finally realized what she was talking about was not as controversial as I had hoped.

#37.

Make It Happen.

Image

This was one of those gems I uncovered in my attempt last year to get more into Mariah's discography. Back then I thought this would've been in the Top 20 were I to do a Mimi countdown. However, after a more thorough examination of Carey's ridiculously strong catalogue, this song was regulated to a Top 40 placement. I love the song as it's such an upbeat, inspirational classic. My favourite part is during the bridge when Mariah sings, "If you believe within your soul, just hold on tight and don't let go, you can make it happen."

#36.

You Need Me.

Image

This song's got such a rock edge and Mariah's vocals sound so strong here that it became an instant favourite the very first time I spun Mariah Carey. It's the perfect song to remind your significant other how much he/she needs you. The line "Before you act so hastily, remember you need me!" is such a powerful lyric.

"Last Kiss" : Decent track from "E=MC^2", but pales very much in comparison to the better album tracks like "Migrate", "Side Effects" and "For The Record". You ranked it too high. 5/10

"Can't Let Go" : Classic Mariah, but too overrated by the fans. It's great nonetheless. It's amazing how a track as phenomenal as this can miss the top 20 - as it just proves the extensive and amazing discograpy Mariah has. 8.5/10

"I've Been Thinking About You" : The first weak song in a few batches. It's underwhelming in my opinion and shouldn't be ranked higher than many of the songs below it. 3/10

"Make It Happen" : Yet another Mariah classic that is greatly overrated by fans. I ain't really a fan of uptempo Mariah generally except for a few exceptions. This track is great, but not as good as "Can't Let Go". 7.5/10

"You Need Me" : One of the decent non-singles off her debut. I wouldn't have ranked this as high as you, though. I feel that Mariah has much better tracks than this. 5/10

"Last Kiss" = of all the E=MC2 tracks that I've never been TOO crazy about ("Migrate", "Thanx 4 Nothin'", "I Wish You Well", "Last Kiss"), this has grown on me the most, but I still think it's much too high here. it's pretty tough to compare Mariah and Taylor, but I actually prefer Taylor's song of the same name.

"Can't Let Go" = this one's quite lovely, I'd actually rank it a bit higher (Top 30). it's a very strong candidate for my favorite track on Emotions. such a shame that it was the song to break her No. 1 streak!

"I've Been Thinking About You" = both this and "Now That I Know" are really dated, but really fun! I wouldn't rank it quite so high, but I do like it. what did you originally think the song was about, though?

"Make It Happen" = a bit too religious for me, but it would probably still make my Top 50.

"You Need Me" = now this is a pretty random pick! I don't really dislike...anything...on her debut, but I never would've expected to see this so high!

Last Kiss - Imo, this is THE BEST non single-ballad on E=MC2, like it, it's a midtempo ballad but not a WBT rehash.

Can't Let Go - Definitely one of her bets ballads ever, so sad it stalled at #2 Hot 100. I really love the final whistle note, one of her best.

I've Been Thinking About You - Just like Now That I Know, both are the only 2 songs from Music Box that i don't really like, very dated uptempo. This song is my least fave on Music Box.

Make It Happen - This is very overrated imo, i never get the big hype, her vocal is flawless and the lyrics are great, but overall it's a bit boring for me, one of my least favorite singles from Mariah. I usually skip this song to the final belting notes.

You Need Me - Very surprised to see this so high on your list, this is my least fave song on her debut, but it's not bad actually, i quite like the rock influence. She sounds emotional in this song.

I'm glad to see you love it so much. :)

anyhow Can't Let Go and Make It Hapen are amazing!! Glad to see them in the top 40, hopefully there will only be better songs up there or else :x  and I've Been Thinking about You is so catchy, love it! One of my favourites from Music Box
Glad you're pleased with this set, bar "Last Kiss", of course.

Whoa! Quite the rocky batch for us! :o Let's hope things will be a bit cleaner with this upcoming batch, though I strongly believe that it won't.

I thought that she was being suggestive with that "peculiar thoughts" line but as it turns out, it's just my dirty mind.

I'm a bit sad that you don't appreciate "I've Been Thinking About You", "Make It Happen", and "You Need Me" as much as I do, but I'm glad you at least like the other two. :)
