Standards, standards... the original comment was that underperforming albums get snubbed. Underperformance is relative to the artist, then industry.

CB went 2x platinum with his first two albums. F.A.M.E. sold 850k after numerous hits on multiple formats. That's an underperformance.

The Element of Freedom and 4 sold more units, plain and simple. They didn't underperform. To say such is to say that ANY artist will sell at the same threshold forever. We all know that's not the case for any artists EVER, minus the now-dead Beatles.

It wasn't an attack on Chris though. I think he did and didn't deserve the award (several pros and cons of the win, in other words). But it's good he got some shine. He finally won one.

@wmosi - I never said Mary's album didn't tank, though I wouldn't consider 500K + and top 40 after 3 months as tanking. "Mr. Wrong" just went top 10 on the R&B chart. Not too shabby (especially compared to CB) and doesn't negate the fact that she's a legend or, now, probably a front-runner until several more albums are released.

@Timmy - CB has begun promotion for the new album and no longer promotes the old. His last album was F.A.M.E.

Even a lifetime achievements award is deserved by other people than Mariah Carey.
Perhaps some artists which never had "mainstream success" but did great music through all the years and reached amazing feedbacks from critics as well as from the people... With this, I mean jazz, latin or classical singers e.g. - who weren't meant to be on top of the charts or have fans under our today's definition anyway...

I just realized that as well, Usher will surely bring it this year, but Chris definitely has the Grammy momentum, we just have to wait and see.

Not everything that isn't hip hop is pop! It's a mix of hip hop and eurodance, pop is Carly Rae Jepson and even if I don't own Roman Reloaded, I doubt that Nicki Minaj sings songs like Call Me Maybe on it :wink:

Anyway, winning a Grammy means not just being a good album, but an amazing album and from what I read, most critics think that it's rather an average album.
Grammys should go to masterpieces of music and I'd rather see a totally unknown amazing album then one by a popular artist which is just OK.

Although most people don't see the album as straight hip hop, there isn't even a hip hop category at the Grammys. There is only a rap category and rap can also mean electro (Flo Rida/LMFAO), country or pop (e.g. Young Wild & Free).
Though this never stopped a record from being nominated in a category which doesn't fit to it (Yoü And I for Pop although it's country/rock, Duets II for pop although it's jazz, The Cave for rock although it's folk, Own The Night for country although it's pop/rock - and this was just during this year).

So what are Adele, Lady Gaga or Lana Del Rey? All three belong to pop and neither of them has a song like "Call Me Maybe".

Pop isn't the style of music they sing, Pop is short for "Popular" musician, so therefore Nicki IS a pop artist eventhough she raps and occasionally sings. Adele is a soul artist that IS very popular therefore she is a pop artist. Lady GaGa is more Dance/Industrial Techno stuff, but she's also very popular so she is a Pop star, and Lana's Getting there too. Basically there is no specific genre in pop as long as its popular and is whats "hot" @ the moment, or the artist being popular themselves, so Yeah. .
