Everything is relative:

Say Adele had a mythological first album, '17' that reached no.14 in UK and didn't chart in the U.S., then her '2nd' album 19 achieved what it did- no.1 in the UK and top 10 US, then there would be absolutely no doubt that '19' is a 'breakthrough' album.

Because 21 has done what it has done, it has obviously 'broken through' on the world stage to a massively more significant extent than 19, so could also be described as a breakthrough album.

It's relative and depends on the parameters that each individual sets to describe a 'breakthrough' album.

I'm not talking about chart positions per se - what I meant is the song was everywhere. Agreed, not on the scale that her new singles have flooded everything from McDonalds restrooms to Airport lounges, but it was pretty big still - it had a ton of remixes as well, including some dnb reworks. Point is, Adele was not unknown or niche before 21 came out - she was already an up-and-coming singer\songwriter with significant hype around her sophomore effort.

Your sig says you are living in Amsterdam.
Of course she already had success in the UK and in the Netherlands, but on a worldwide view, she hasn't really had her breakthrough yet.

For explaining the term "breakthrough album", I'd give Kelly Clarkson's Breakaway, P!nk's M!ssundaztood or Rihanna's GGGB. They had success before with their previous albums but those ones are the ones that made them big.

I don t understand what s the difference between Gotye and Fun, i mean they have the same audience imo, though even when We Are Young peaked, Gotye's album was higher on the charts.

It s seems like Fun is a "single" act while Gotye is more like Mumford and Sons.
I think Gotye could be a little more "adult" oriented rock / alternative act while Fun. is more of a "teen" rock act.
well i agree ^^

i also think that many people are unwilling to buy an album if the first single is a featuring song, i notice that esp with urban acts, that s why Gotye & Fun won t get Mumford & Sons'success imo, however i guess it s too soon to say that they won t but it s just my intuition.
What if we choose to exist in a reality of our own making, does that render us insane, and if so, isn't that better than a life of despair?

The Wanted needs to grab the top spot for next weeks charts. I dont want 1D fans to laugh at them if they fail but longevity is more important.

Who cares about what One Direction fans think about it?
I mean it's not like we are 14-year-old-girls freaking out about everything that's related to a certain music act  .

Of course longevity is the most important thing...
Though One Direction reached No. 1 when they haven't had a hit and still where able to sell 176k copies that week. So The Wanted with a huge hit on their back should be able to sell somewhere between 200 and 250k copies...
The release schedule is quite empty for that week so that should be enough to reach No. 1.

I saw Adele at the Roxy (really, really small venue) in Los Angeles in May 2008 and no one outside of a few music geeks knew who she was. Even when I saw her at San Diego House of Blues a couple of weeks after the 2009 Grammy wins, not many knew of her. I've seen her six times and until 21 dropped it was no problem getting tickets in the US.

Thank you!

I've been thinking this for TWO months! It's so misleading and a LIE!

Can the mods or Vana update it?
"Take A Bow"... Rihanna's ONLY ballad to go #1 on the Hot 100 (also topped the R&B Chart)... Great deed for her most epic ballad!!!

True. But a more apropriate title for the thread would be something like this: "ADELE and other Hits Daily Double related discussion ."  8-)

It seems to be "one of those weeks". The UK also had pretty pathetic overall sales and Japan won't be much better.
