phoenix98 wrote::lol: well...it would've been nice if you had experienced this revelation regarding "Honey", "Dreamlover", and "Fantasy" a bit sooner...like before you started the countdown...but hey, better late than never! ;)

"Love Takes Time" = this one is usually pretty under-appreciated by fans, but I LOVE it! it would definitely make my Top 20 too.

"Lord I'm needing you now,
tell me now to stop the rain,
tears are falling down endlessly..."

"Lead The Way" = gorgeous! it's not quite my favorite non-single on Glitter (that honor goes to "Didn't Mean To Turn You On"), but this is still one of the highlights of the album. it's definitely my favorite Glitter ballad.

"Obsessed" = yeah...I'm definitely judging a bit. it's not terrible, and I agree that it has some great lines, but it does pale in comparison to most of Mariah's lead singles. it probably wouldn't make my Top 50.
Yeah, I just knew that "Obsessed" would be the clunker of the batch for you. Glad you appreciate the other two, though.

leoapp wrote:Love Takes Time - I must be in the minority, but the studio version of Love Takes Time >>>>>>>> Vision Of Love, Love Takes Time is the best single from her debut era. So underrated and will always be overshadowed by Vision Of Love and her other more popular ballads. I love it!

Lead The Way - I wish this song was recognized more, it's one of her best album tracks ever, the long note is just unbelievable, her longest studio note ever. Too bad the song is from Glitter, an album which not many people want to buy and try. This is the 2nd best song on Glitter after Never Too Far imo.

Obsessed - I really love it, among my top 10. Her best uptempo after Fantasy. Her best uptempo from 2000s! So different compared to her other materials. The lyrics are very smart imo. The production is simple but very catchy. I wish her whistles at the end of the song were more prominent though.
Sounds like this was a clean batch for you! *High-fives leoapp* 8-)

Tripolis wrote: "Love Takes Time" : My second-favourite single from her debut after "Vision of Love". This song is great, and the lyrics are so true. However, it does get boring after some time, though, and I'm not sure if I'm that fond of it to rank it within my top 20. It'll definitely make my top 50, though. 7.5/10

"Lead The Way" : Easily the best song from "Glitter", along with "Never Too Far". It's probably among my top 20 as well, and her belting at the end slays every other song out there. It deserved to be a massive hit. One of Mariah's best songs from the 2000s, and among her most underrated singles ever (by the public). Glad to see it receives love from the fans, though. 8.5/10

"Obsessed" : This is one of Mariah's weakest lead singles ever, but it's still decent. I'm not sure if I'll rank it as high as you did, though, as even though I find it decent, Mariah has much more gems than this track. It's one of her best uptempos from the 2000s, though. I prefer "Touch My Body" to this track, and I love the music video for this. Her diss to Eminem was rather evident in some parts of the lyrics in this song. ("it must be the weed, it must be the E") My favourite line has to be " you a mom and pop, I'm a corporation" . 7/10
You seemed a bit underwhelmed by this batch bar "Lead The Way". I hope the next batch will prove to be stronger. :)

HALLELUJAH! They're 3 of my favourites!

And 'Fly Like a Bird' at #21 - it's my #1 so I'm glad to see it fairly high :D
Glad you seem alright with the rankings. And even though I ranked "Fly Like A Bird" twenty slots lower than you did, I can totally see why it's your fave MC song. It's so powerful.

stevyy wrote:The radio debut-release day of Obsessed does prove that Mariah's not only my soulmate, but I am hers as well. I come to this conclusion because the song celebrated its radio-debut at my birthday in 2009. Yeah right, Mariah gave me a song for my birthday! Can this be topped? -Maybe! When she divorces Nick and moves in with me.

So Obsessed has a close spot in my heart. from the first second I found it hot. The beat, the melody, the laid-back-pace. It is a cool song with cool lyrics. I think everyone has - at least since the song is out - used the term "Why u so obsessed with me" to get rid of someone.

I also find her performances at AGT and Lopez hot.

Lead the Way was an instand everygreen in my world. Best song on Glitter and probably the last ever collaboration with sir Walter A. It also was the last 90's-retro ballad since she smashed hard with One Child.

LTT: well, it sounds nice in a live version. Apart from that.. it's meh.
Gotta love you, Stephan! You're definitely a stan. But at least you stan for one of the best.

YASSS @ you seeing the light.. hallelujah! As for the songs. Love Takes Time is great but way too high for my liking. Lead The Way is easily one of the best from Glitter (which is so underrated) amazing to see i in the top 20! :D :D :D Obsessed is catchy (me and my sister were just singing this song out of nowhere haha) but the auto tuned vocals <<<

"Love Takes Time" is a cute song.

"Lead The Way" is phenomenal. The belt is amazing. I like the song, I really do, but it's not one of my favorite MC songs ever because I can't help feeling it's Glitter's response to "I Will Always Love You".

"Obsessed" is a smash. People might rag on it because it's immature, but I love it. Even though Eminem smeared her in his later song, Mariah proved that she's not a punk. I mean, it's obvious the song is about Eminem, and Eminem has a career of killing careers. But Mariah did it anyway. For a second, she was the ballsiest girl making music. And I agree with whoever said that the best line in the song is "You a mom-and-pop, I'm a corporation/ I'm the press conference, you're a conversation, uhahohoh".

Oh Santa!

Image

Though a number of fans and critics alike dismissed "Oh Santa!" as a shameless rehash of Carey's more iconic "All I Want For Christmas Is You", I absolutely love this Christmas track! The beat is so festive and the lyrics are ultra catchy. The line "Santa's gonna come and make you mine this Christmas" just makes me smile. Much like "All I Want For Christmas Is You", this is a track that I can spin all year-round.

#16.

Now That I Know.

Image

The second of four non-singles to make my Top 20, "Now That I Know" is a funky uptempo number from Carey's Music Box record. The lyrics are great and the chorus is especially delightful but there's just something about the beat that just makes me want to move. This should've been released as a single, in my opinion as it would've been a surefire #1 hit for her.

Shocking you rank these 2 songs so high

Oh Santa - This is her poppiest song in years, i like it, it's no All I Want For Xmas Is You, but it's very catchy and fun. And it sounds very modern. I just don't really like some cheer sound in this song. Hopefully this will be remembered in years like All I Want For Xmas Is You.

Now That I Know - I can't at how this songs ranks soo high, higher than many of her better songs. This is imo the 2nd weakest track on Music Box, after I've Been Thinking About You. A very forgettable uptempo, and quite generic imo. I usually just skip this every tme i listen to Music Box. Well, maybe i should give this more listen.

"Oh Santa!" : One of her weakest lead singles ever, and pales in comparison to many other tracks from her latest Christmas effort ("One Child", "Auld Lang Syne", "The First Noel"). It's still decent though, and a modern-day Christmas classic. It's success can never match the one of "All I Want For Christmas Is You", though, and even though I like this song, it doesn't deserve to be in the top 50 imo. 7/10

"Now That I Know" : Shocking that you ranked this song so high! This song is good, but definitely not on par with the Mariah classics lower down. It's definitely a standout from "Music Box", and definitely makes the album more lively. It's not in my favourite MiMi non-singles, though. It should probably be ranked around the top 70. Top 20 is far too high. 7/10

 both of those are WAY too high...but still I love them both, so it's forgivable! ;)

"Oh Santa!" = did NOT see this one coming, so kudos for keeping this surprise under wraps! it's a shame this didn't take off more, because it's incredibly fun and catchy and perfect for the holidays...but, of course, if radio's gonna play a Mariah song during the holidays, it's gonna be AIWFCIY.

"Now That I Know" = as Tripolis said, this one is certainly good, but it doesn't belong above the classics you ranked much lower. it's definitely a lot of fun, though, and I think it could've made a decent single choice!

#15.

I Want To Know What Love Is.

Image

The highest ranking track from Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, "I Want To Know What Love Is" comes in at #15. Carey's take on the Foreigner classic was considered by many to be an upgrade of the original. While the song was only a moderate hit worldwide, it did spend more than half a year at #1 on the Brazilian charts, a massive achievement by any standards. I love the song for the build-up to the climactic close complete with a gospel choir and those signature Carey whistles.

#14.

Butterfly.

Image

The very first of the poll options to fall, "Butterfly", the second single from it's parent album comes in at #14. Due to it's non-commercial release, "Butterfly" failed to attain the chart success that many of Carey's other singles did but it remains a fan favourite. Mariah herself cites the track as her "favourite and most personal ballad." I actually discovered this song through a countdown Stephan had late last year and ever since then I've loved it. The lyrics are just so beautiful especially the line, "Fly abandonedly into the sun, if you should return to me, we truly were meant to be, so spread your wings and fly, butterfly."

#13.

When You Believe.

Image

At the time of this epic duet, Whitney and Mariah were arguably the two biggest female stars on the planet. Thus, their combined forces were expected to send any song hurtling into the stratosphere. Though "When You Believe" wasn't quite the hit on the charts as many expected it to be, the song is undoubtedly a classic. Growing up, I remember hearing this song on the radio all the time and it was actually the very first song I ever learned the full lyrics to. For me, Houston's and Carey's vocals blended perfectly, the inspirational lyrics lent itself to many a hopeless situation, and this absolute titan of a duet will go down in the books as one of the greatest musical collaborations of all-time.

"I Want To Know What Love Is" : My favourite track off "Memoirs...". This track is an amazing ballad, and by far better than "Angel's Cry", though the latter isn't a bad song either. I won't rank it as high as you did, though. One of her best-covers ever. 8/10

"Butterfly" : Now this is EPIC! One of her best songs ever and totally deserves a top 10 placing. This track is AMAZING and IMO is Mariah's most personal ballad ever. It's such a fan favourite and I can understand why. I won't say anything else so to keep the suspense for my countdown. 10/10

"When You Believe" (with Whitney Houston)" : Easily one of the best collaborations ever. The combination of two greatest voices of all-time really makes this song a timeless classic, and one that truly deserved much more success in the US. I've come to re-discover and appreciate this song all over again since Whitney's tragic death earlier this year, and this is a true inspiration for people who are struggling in life. 8.5/10

I Want TO Know What Love Is, lovely cover, but nowhere near her best or the original. It could have been better.

Butterfly: My favourite from this batch. I love the chorus a whole lot, glad to see this very high, I don;t know if I would've placed it this high though. Shame it wasn't properly released int he US, easily another top 5 for her in the US.

When You Believe, not too keen on this one, it has yet to grow on me.

In contrast to many other people, i completely adore Mariah's rendition of I Want To Know What Love Is. It was the return of a typical Mariah Carey ballad. I agree though that it was a terrible single choice for the US market in 2009. This was the pre-Adele era when you could not have a hit with a super slow piano ballad.

"I Want To Know What Love Is" = I'm not entirely sure why I dislike this one quite so much...it's not that I'm a diehard fan of the original or anything...but it's just really underwhelming. it pales in comparison to the other ballads on Memoirs ("H.A.T.E.U.", "Angels Cry", heck...even "Languishing (Interlude)") and REALLY pales in comparison to her catalog of epic ballads. the video is just an embarrassing mess too (granted, she somehow managed to follow it with an even MORE embarrassing video...). this definitely would NOT make my Top 50...probably not even Top 100.

"Butterfly" = now here we have a MUCH better ballad! this one's definitely Top 40-worthy for me. people (well, h8ers) say that Mariah is all about vocal acrobatics and can't actually express emotion in her singing...but I think it's pretty hard to NOT hear any emotion in this. "for you'll never be mine, until you know the way it feels to fly..."

"When You Believe" = these two ladies are undoubtedly incredibly talented, but I don't think this duet comes close to being one of the best moments from either of their catalogs. it's good...Top 50-worthy, sure...but definitely not Top 15-worthy for me.
