Songs That "Lost" an Artist For You?

I don't think we've had this thread before. If we have, let me know and I'll lock.

What are some songs that have caused you to lose interest in an artist you once loved? Why?

Here are a few of mine, including some that may shock some people

Michael (& Janet Jackson), "Scream"

The song does have some catchy elements to it, but there is lots of screeching, yelling, and whining on the song that I personally find grating. MJ never returned to my top 10 after this release.

Mariah Carey, "I Still Believe"

Brenda K. Starr's original is one of my favorite 80s ballads. Mariah probably covered it as a tribute to her friend. Before this song, I was in love with Mariah-- her poster on my wall, regular top 10 hits on my chart. The song IMO takes all the raw emotion of the original out and turns it into just a vocal maze. She has never even made my top 75 since. The poster is also long gone.

Debbie Gibson, "No More Rhyme"

If I had joined UKMIX in 1988, I may well have been considered a Debbie stan. At 16, I foolishly dreamed of taking her to my prom. She regularly featured in my top 5. Then this dry ballad was released. I lost interest very fast and it seems I wasn't alone. Her career nosedived very soon after.

Aaron Lewis (of Staind), "Country Boy"

In perhaps the biggest fall from grace, there is this song from a couple years back on Aaron Lewis' country album, a song that went all-in with the American Tea Party, a group that seems IMHO to be really just a redressed KKK. Staind has gone from a regular #1 artist on my chart to a band that struggles to chart.

What are some of your similar songs? What songs completely changed your mind about an artist?

Lady Gaga "Born This Way"
Celine Dion "I Drove All Night"
Maroon 5 "Moves Like Jagger"
Backstreet Boys "Larger Than Life"
Jennifer Lopez "Jenny From The Block"
Jewel "Stronger Woman"
3 Doors Down "Here Without You"
Poison "Stand"
Bon Jovi "Always"
Def Leppard "Let's Get Rocked"
Phil Collins "Hang In Long Enough"
Rod Stewart "Have I Told You Lately"

some of those artists have had decent tracks afterwards (I'm actually charting Maroon 5's "Payphone" right now) but that was a moment where things went downhill and things never went back to where it was before IMO

You should give her another try. Sweet and Wild is miles better than the previous album which is the perfect epitome of a borefest.

Couldn't agree more with those three. I was actually shocked when all three came out on how bad they were.

Rihanna - You Da One and the whole Talk Talk Talk album!

I was never her biggest fan but that song and album just ended any interest I had in her!! Can't stand her now!

one of my favs too. epic love ballad <3 so simple and epic I dont even understand how anyone could dislike it :(

Rihanna - Rude Boy. I never was a big Rihanna fan, but I liked her Rated R album and that era. Rude Boy is the only track from Rated R that I dislike. after Rated R she went back to her normal irritating slutty or cheesy meaningless songs. Loud was rubbish, and Im not familiar with her latest album, I only heard 2 singles, We Found Love and I dont remember the title of the other one, both are extremely annoying and crap.

Two more I forgot:

Michael Bolton - Can I Touch You... There?

I was never a big Bolton fan, but I did buy his "Time, Love, And Tenderness" album and liked a few songs from it. Then, this song came out. The title says it all. What the heck was he thinking?

Bryan Adams - The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me Is You

Bryan Adams had two of the best albums from 1984-1991: "Reckless" and "Waking Up The Neighbors". Then, in the mid-90s, he did this (and it just got worse from there). He has barely made my chart since.

There's a few for me:

Avril Lavigne - Smile
I really liked her on her first two albums and even "The Best Damn Thing" had its moments despite a fast burn rate. And while I liked the lead single "What The Hell" a lot, it was "Smile" that ruined her for me. Way too immature sounding, it made me realize her career was going in the wrong direction, and fast! She has yet to have a big hit for me since.

Nickelback - Rockstar
In the midst of their overplayed 2005-07 period came this song, with their worst lyrical clichés ever. While they did have some decent songs since ("If Today Was Your Last Day" and "Never Gonna Be Alone", in particular), they just haven't been the same since.

Jennifer Lopez f/Fat Joe - Hold You Down
Another case of not totally lost interest, but this really held her down as I felt it was very bland.

U2 - Get On Your Boots
This had a very fast burn rate for me, and to date, they have yet to recover.

Rihanna - Rude Boy
I'd generally found her stuff good before this, but this was truly the first Rihanna single I hated. While she has had some good stuff since (particularly "Only Girl (In The World)" and "S&M"), she hasn't had any real classics for me. Further cementing this status are songs like "You Da One" and "Birthday Cake", easily her worst ever.

Backstreet Boys - Inconsolable
I'd generally liked them up until this point, but this showed a lack of originality, and that their creativity had stalled. Sadly, they haven't had any great stuff since.

Beyoncé - Run The World (Girls)
It's no secret that this is one of my most hated songs ever, and one of the biggest disappointments ever. Despite a few decent songs since, none have come close to reaching the level of her classics for me.

Mariah Carey - Touch My Body
I did initially latch onto the hype for this, but it really died off fast for me... and she hasn't had any really redeeming songs since this for me.

Black Eyed Peas - Boom Boom Pow
For me, this was the beginning of the end for them, as their creativity led to them releasing generic, disposable records. And while the E.N.D. was mediocre for me, The Beginning was even worse, and ever since the horrible "The Time (Dirty Bit)", they've failed to make any kind of impression.

Sheryl Crow - Love Is Free
I'd liked most of her stuff up until this point, but this was really the start of releasing mostly uninspired stuff... sadly, she has yet to recover for me.

Sugababes - Girls
What kind of mess was this? Combined with the drama of their membership changes, this completely made me lose interest in them.

Leona Lewis - Collide
What a disappointment considering how much I'd liked her up until this point... and I doubt she'll recover.

Sarah McLachlan - Loving You Is Easy
We waited 7 years for THIS dull release? I used to really like her, but this was enough to put me off her.

Mandy Moore - I Could Break Your Heart Any Day Of The Week
Sure, one indie-styled album was alright as I still liked her then, but a second was just too much, and this really put me off her.

Dido - Don't Believe In Love
Another long-awaited return that really failed to deliver.

Chantal Kreviazuk - Invincible
Completely failed to register for me. Shame as she's had so many great songs before this.

James Blunt - Stay The Night
Really, all he could do was rip off Train?

Jason Mraz - I'm Yours
That this was my #1 most hated song of all time, especially coming from an artist who I'd enjoyed many songs from before, should say it all.

Celine's I Drove All Night is criticised for being soulless - compared to the definitive Orbison version, any would be soulless - but I love it, despite what people think of it. Its a great club tune, and she hits those big notes like nobody else.

Mariah Carey - Obsessed

- Final straw for me, was this monstrosity. I didn't even buy Memoirs, but I can remember for a short while, I was totally devoid of any feeling for her music. Then One Child came, thankfully, and reminded me of just why she's so damn good.

Stereophonics - My Friends / Innocent

- They are going to have to come back with something good to recapture me. I love these guys but these two singles - from separate records - both seem crap to me nowadays, compared to what they've put out before.

Destiny's Child - Independent Women - overrated and annoying. I realised at this point that it was the Beyonce show and anything they released would be a hit, no matter how poor it was in comparison to everything from 'The Writing's On The Wall'.

GaGa's Alejandro did it for me, especially when accompanied with that video. It was beyond ridiculous, and she continues to go downhill in my opinion.

Even though I'm still interested in new Mariah Carey projects, I haven't really liked any of her singles since Touch My Body.

The only one I liked was H.A.T.E. U but it did not work as a single and was a mega flop.

Kelly Clarkson:
I loved Breakaway and All I ever wanted but her new album is a huge turn-off, especially the first two singles. I will continue to play her back catalogue and will just leave this era out.

Hahaha. Only Britney song I really like (and have on my laptop). But then, that's probably due to the connection I have with this song and a certain kinky ex-GF.

Mariah Carey lost me somewhere between "My Love", "Obsessed", "I Want To Know What Love Is" and "Up Out My Face".

That's a shame, cos Catfights & Spotlights is a fantastic album, one of the best of their entire career IMO. It's mature, sophisticated and NOTHING like Girls whatsoever. Sunday Rain is probably my favourite Babes song ever, it's beautiful. And Girls came out almost a year before Keisha left too, so you should definitely give C&S a chance!

Beyonce - If I Were A Boy / Single Ladies
Both very very bad songs, first I didn't liked that she started that era with midtempo song, it would be okay if it was a good song, but it wasn't, nothing could touch me from that song. Single Ladies most irritating song ever. Since those two songs, she had few good songs, but nothing what could me blown away as she did with second era.

Lady Gaga - Bad Romance
Same as SL very very irritating song, she completely put me of from her thanks to that song and songs on that EP, okay 'Monster' was really good, but the rest nothing. Same for this BTW era.

Leona Lewis - Collide
Absolutely weak, I don't know why she released such a thing, or why she even recorded something like that. Her first two albums were flawless and she should stick at that sound.
