parking lots? gurl, I never even visit those...the limo always drops me off at the front door, the lesser driver parks it wherever he wants.

aw, there you go girl, I love the positive thinking! you're right, at LEAST you have a job now...you're certainly better off than you were a month ago: flashing your sh*t on the streets for pity pennies and stealing food out of my garbage bin at night.

if you keep up this positive thinking, someday, you might even have a successful career like moi! well...probably not..but whatever delusions help you make it through each day.

and Akini should be honoured that his thread was site of this epic wig snatching (I'll give it back to you after my show tonight).

"Anytime You Need A Friend" : One of her best gospel-sounding songs ever and easily the best (along with "Hero") from Music Box. I just love the chorus and the last two verses of this song. It's been sort of a recent discovery for me, however (probably about six months ago), and since then, it's become one of my favourite Mariah tunes from the '90s. Great song, and I think your placing is quite appropriate. 9/10

"Vision of Love" : I'm not sure how high I would rank it to be honest, as I've have had a love-hate relationship with this song. Sometimes I find this one of the greatest lead singles ever, sometimes I find this a little bland in comparison to other Mariah classics. One thing's for sure, though, this song really propel Mariah to worldwide fame and should be the song that would cement her as one of the all-time greats in the history of music. ??/10 (changes often)

Anytime You Need A Friend - Her best gospel song and probably her most commercial gospel tune as well. Her high belting notes through the end are just flawless. This is my favorite song from Music Box after Without You. I think it's a bit underrated chart-wise cos it became her first single not to make top 10 in US.

Vision of Love - An amazing debut single, i love the simple melody. May i say, one of the best debut singles from any female artists.
However, i much prefer the live version than the studio version, because the whistle notes are more interesting.

At least it's not 132 places where you ranked it. *Sips Lipton*

phoenix98 wrote:"Anytime You Need A Friend" = I was just saying in stevyy's countdown, I've always found this one really over-rated by fans...so while I'm glad to see it missed your Top 10, I still think No. 12 is much too high  maybe it's just too gospel-sounding for me?

"Vision Of Love" = now this one I'm bummed to see MISS your Top 10, but at least it came very very close! one of...actually, quite possibly THE best lead single...ever. epic. <3
I'm not at all surprised that you don't like "Anytime You Need A Friend". I figured it'd be too preachy a track for you.

As for "Vision of Love", it's definitely close and it hurt my heart to not grant a spot in the Top 10 but as I said before, Mariah's discography is so strong.

I agree with you that "Anytime You Need A Friend" is Mimi's best gospel track. I also agree that the live version of "Vision of Love" is superior to the studio version, though both versions are pretty infallible.

You think so? In my opinion, I don't think it's even possible to overpraise these two incredible tracks.

Albums Intermission!!!

It's at this point of the countdown where I'd like to pause for a moment and take some time to address MC's studio albums in general. Here's the first batch. I'm sure no one will be surprised with what was ranked my least fave MC record.

#11.

Glitter.

Image

With most of the Glitter tracks exiting my countdown before the Top 100, it comes as no surprise that Glitter is my least favourite record. As a writer from Billboard wrote, "Glitter is a minor misstep in a stellar career that has earned the singer a few passes." The major downfall of the album is that the ballads where Carey usually shines fall flat and come off as uninspired, bar the incredible "Lead The Way" of course. Some of the uptempo tracks are borderline listenable and some tracks, like the lead single for instance, are just plain embarrassing. Sorry, Matt. It seems that the public agreed with me as Glitter became the least successful Mariah Carey album to date, barely managing a Top 10 debut in the US and grazing a Platinum certification there as well. Though a cruel thought, I've always wondered if there was a correlation between the album's release date and the tragic terrorist attacks. 4.8/10.

#10.

Charmbracelet.

Image

The follow-up to the disappointment that was Glitter, Charmbracelet proved to be an improvement, but not by much. My biggest issue with the album is the lack of standout tracks. "Through The Rain" is undoubtedly incredible and "Bringin' On The Heartbreak" is solid as well, but the album tracks leave you wanting more, in my opinion. The album did fare better than its predecessor, though, peaking at #3 in the US and obtaining a Gold certification in the UK. 5.2/10.

#9.

Daydream.

Image

Generally regarded as one of Carey's stronger records, this low ranking may come as a bit of a surprise. With the exception of the flawless "Always Be My Baby" and the emotional but inspiring "One Sweet Day", I feel that Daydream is a pretty sub-par effort overall. It seems that the public and critics disagree as the album is Carey's second-best seller to date and was her best-received album at the time. The album peaked at #1 in the US and UK and went on to sell some 25 million copies worldwide. The Daydream era is perhaps most notably known for the controversy at the Grammy awards where Mariah was (unfairly) shut out, losing in all six categories in which she was nominated. 6.1/10.

I'd have to agree with your placing of "Glitter" and "Charmbracelet", though I myself would have probably ranked them a little higher.

I do find "Daydream" to have a few stellar tracks, though it has a fair amount of filler too. I won't rank it as low as you did, however, but I feel it is pretty overrated among fans. It'll probably be around my top 6 or top 7, I guess? It isn't great, but it's better than some of her recent efforts.

hmmm...I'm okay with the rankings for Glitter and CB...but Daydream at No. 9? below Memoirs?? it would be my No. 2 !

my least favorite moments on Daydream are "I Am Free" and "Looking In"...and neither of those are even that bad...while its best moments ("Fantasy", "Foever", "One Sweet Day", "Always Be My Baby", "When I Saw You") are PHENOMENAL! "Slipping Away" wasn't included on any version of the album, but since it was an "Always Be My Baby" B-side, I include it with this epic era too. this album was a fantastic transition between the pop/AC Mariah that came before and the very R&B-flavored Mariah that was on the horizon. tsk tsk tsk, Akini...

Glitter - It's not a bad album actually, all ballads are incredibly amazing, sadly a couple of the uptempo are not great and too retro for me. It's my least favorite album of her though. Had they cut down some filler uptempos, Glitter would be my top 5 album.
Top tracks: Loverboy, Lead The Way, Never Too Far, Twister, Reflection (Care Enough)
Fillers: Didn't Mean To Turn You On, Last Night A DJ Saved My Life, All My Life, Want You

Charmbracelet - This is so underrated, i think it's her 2nd best album of 00s after E=MC2. I love her whiper-ish vocal in this album. What i also like is because It has some variety.
Top tracks: Through The Rain, Boy (I Need You), The One, Yours, I Only Wanted, Bringin' On the Heartbreak
Fillers: Lullaby, You Had Your Chance, Got A Thing 4 U (bonus track)

Daudream - So low on your ranking, how come? It's my fave album of her, so solid, all albums tracks are equally great, except probably Forever which is the weakest one but it's still quite great.
Top tracks: Fantasy, Always Be My Baby, Open Arms, I Am Free, Melt Away, When I Saw You, Long Ago

Daydream is your second-fave, Paul? I didn't know that. Unfortunately, you won't like where I rank your fave MC record either.

I actually find most of the Glitter ballads to be painfully dull.

I actually detest her "whispery" vocals on Charmbracelet especially on "Bringin' On The Heartbreak" which could've been even more epic than it turned out to be.

Aw, sorry for ranking your fave so low. :( I really don't like the album tracks that much.

#10.

Without You.

Image

The third of four Music Box entries in my Top 20, we kick off the Top 10 with Carey's classic cover of "Without You". As with all of MC's covers, it's far superior to the original, at least in my opinion. The song is yet another display of Mariah's masterclass vocals. Although the soaring chorus is certainly a highlight, my favourite part of the song is actually at the first verse when Mariah sings, "You always smile but in your eyes, your sorrow shows". The tenderness with which MC sings that line is nearly heartbreaking. Such an emotional ballad! The song was a huge commercial success for Mariah, peaking at #1 in the UK and Germany and #3 in the US.

#9.

My All.

Image

The fourth and final single from the Butterfly record winds up that album's highest ranking track. Lyrically, "My All" is absolute brilliance. The masterfully penned track is so powerfully brought to life by Mariah's emotive vocals which convey the message of the song so perfectly. The lyric that breaks my heart is "If it's wrong to love you, then my heart just won't let me be right." That line is just so relatable! The song was a hit in the US peaking at #1. It also enjoyed transatlantic success peaking at #4 in the UK and within the Top 10 in several other European territories.

#8.

Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now).

Image

The third of the poll choices to fall, "Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now)" was the final single from Rainbow and is also that album's highest ranking track on my countdown. This is my fave MC cover ever. What I love so much about this track is its powerful, gripping chorus. It just makes me want to belt out the chorus at the top of my lungs. Like most great songs, this track builds and builds until the 2:43-2:46 mark where the emotion in Carey's voice is so vivid, it sounds almost as if the songstress herself is going to break down. The American public never got to experience the pure brilliance of this track as the single was never released stateside, and in the select places where the song was released, it was only a moderate hit. Nevertheless, the track remains one of my faves from Mariah and is a true testament to not only her vocal abilities but also to her ability to sell a song and make the listener feel every word she sings.

"Without You" : This song is amazing . It's easily one of her best covers ever, and it's probably her most known hit in Europe. I'm not gonna lie, it was my favourite MC song when I first discovered her, but, it'll probably not even make my top 20 now. I just feel that Carey has much better tracks than this amazing song. I love her vocals in this song - they're just so strong, and it's definitely one of the standouts from "Music Box". This song can be very overrated by fans sometimes, though. 8.5/10

"My All" : I used to like this song in the past, but... I cannot stand it now, and the fact that it gets so much praise from fans for being among her all-time bests. It's just so overpraised and overplayed in my opinion. I don't know where I would rank this though, as it's been one of my favourite ever Mariah songs at a point in time. probably 6.5/10 now; 8.5/10 a few months ago.

"Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now)" : It's definitely not my favourite Mariah cover, but it's a decent effort. I don't understand all the hate it gets from fans. It doesn't reach the level of epicness of the original though... I like how Mariah tries to sort of restrain her voice and not belt like she does in most of her other songs, so I got to kind of applaud her for that. 7.5/10
