Jack White's first solo album, Blunderbuss, debuts at #1 this week in both the U.S. and the U.K. This marks the fourth time that the first solo album by a prominent member of a group or duo has reached #1 in both countries. Blunderbuss follows George Harrison's All Things Must Pass, George Michael's Faith and Beyonce's Dangerously In Love. All three of those artists had had "transatlantic #1" albums with their famous groups (the Beatles, Wham! and Destiny's Child, respectively) prior to their solo debuts. White nearly did too, but the White Stripes' 2007 album Icky Thump, which hit #1 in the U.K., peaked at #2 in the U.S.

Blunderbuss is White's eighth top 10 album on The Billboard 200, following three albums with the White Stripes, two with the Raconteurs and two with the Dead Weather. The White Stripes first cracked the chart in March 2002 with White Blood Cells. The Stripes' last three albums won Grammys as Best Alternative Music Album (which puts the band in a tie with Radiohead for the most wins in the category's 22-year history). White has amassed nine Grammy Awards in all.

White is the second artist with that surname to top the U.S. album chart. He follows the inimitable Barry White, who hit #1 in October 1974 with Can't Get Enough. (I don't think the two are related.)

White's album sold 78K digital copies (out of 138K total), which puts it at #1 on Top Digital Albums.

The Fine Print: George Harrison released a pair of instrumental albums before All Things Must Pass, but they were experimental and had limited appeal. I think it's fair to call the triple-disk (!) All Things Must Pass his solo debut.

Adele's 21, which inches up from #3 to #2, logs its 62nd week in the top 10. That's the longest run in the top 10 by any album since Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill spent 72 weeks in the top 10 from August 1995 to January 1997.

We're running out of album titles, but this is ridiculous. There are two albums in the top 10 titled Up All Night. One Direction's former #1 album with that title rebounds from #5 to #4. Country singer Kip Moore's like-titled album bows at #6. In the fall of 2008, two albums titled Fearless cracked the top 10 (though they never appeared in the top 10 at the same time). R&B singer Jazmine Sullivan hit #6 that September with an album by that title. Taylor Swift's like-titled album debuted at #1 seven weeks later.

The Wanted's first U.S. release, The Wanted, bows at #7. The seven-song EP sold 34K copies, only about one-fifth as many as One Direction's full-length Up All Night sold (176K) when it debuted at #1 six weeks ago (and 16K less than One Direction's album sold this week.) Does this give One Direction "boy band" bragging rights? I think it does. Both groups have smash singles. The Wanted's "Glad You Came" has sold 2,221,000 copies. One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful" has sold 1,763,000.

Adele's Live At The Royal Albert Hall is #1 on Top Music Videos for the 22nd week. This equals Whitney Houston's record for the longest run at #1 by a female solo artist. Houston's The #1 Video Hits was #1 for its first 22 weeks in 1986. Live At Royal Albert Hall has sold 826,000 copies. That's less than one-tenth as many copies as Adele's album 21 (which has sold 8,909,000 copies), but it's a very solid number for a music video.

Pop Quiz: A female artist was #1 when the Music Video chart was introduced in March 1985. (It was called Top Music Videocassettes at the time.) Who was that woman and what was her video? Answer below the top 10 list.

"Somebody That I Used To Know" by Gotye featuring Kimbra returns to #1 on Hot Digital Songs, dethroning "Payphone" by Maroon 5 featuring Wiz Khalifa. Which will come out on top on the Hot 100? You'll find out later today when we post Chart Watch: Songs.

Here's the low-down on this week's top 10 albums.

1. Jack White, Blunderbuss, 138,000. This new entry is White's first #1 album; his eighth to reach the top 10.

2. Adele, 21, 84,000. The former #1 album rebounds from #3 to #2 in its 62nd week. It has been in the top 10 the entire time. Four songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs, topped by "Rumour Has It," which dips from #22 to #23.

3. Lionel Richie, Tuskegee, 78,000. The former #1 album drops to #3 in its fifth week. It has been in the top five the entire time. It's #1 on Top Country Albums for the fourth week.

4. One Direction, Up All Night, 50,000. The former #1 album rebounds from #5 to #4 in its seventh week. It has been in the top 10 the entire time. Three songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs, topped by "What Makes You Beautiful," which dips from #6 to #7.

5. Lee Brice, Hard 2 Love, 46,000. This new entry is the country singer's first top 10 album. Brice's 2010 debut album, Love Like Crazy, debuted and peaked at #44 in June 2010. Three songs from the new album are listed on Hot Digital Songs, topped by "A Woman Like You" (a recent #1 country hit), which drops from #38 to #42.

6. Kip Moore, Up All Night, 37,000. This new entry is Moore's debut album. "Something 'Bout A Truck" jumps from #40 to #36 on Hot Digital Songs.

7. The Wanted, The Wanted, 34,000. This new entry, a seven-song EP, is the boy band's U.S. debut. Two songs from the EP are listed on Hot Digital Songs. "Glad You Came" dips from #9 to #10. "Chasing The Sun" drops from #71 to #115.

8. Nicki Minaj, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, 32,000. The former #1 album drops from #6 to #8 in its fourth week. It has been in the top 10 the entire time. Three songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs, topped by "Starships," which dips from #8 to #9.

9. Gotye, Making Mirrors, 32,000. The album drops from #7 to #9 in its 17th week. This is its fourth week in the top 10. "Somebody That I Used To Know" (featuring Kimbra) returns to #1 on Hot Digital Songs.

10. Jason Mraz, Love Is A Four Letter Word, 29,000. The album drops from #2 to #10 in its second week. "I Won't Give Up" holds at #24 on Hot Digital Songs.

Four albums drop out of the top 10 this week. Train's California 37 drops from #4 to #11, Future's Pluto drops from #8 to #18, Bonnie Raitt's Slipstream drops from #9 to #14, and Luke Bryan's Tailgates & Tanlines drops from #10 to #12.

The Black Keys' El Camino rebounds from #16 to #13 in its 21st week. A new version of the album was released for Record Store Day on April 21. The album, which debuted and peaked at #2 in December, has sold 767K copies. It's on its way to becoming the duo's second straight million-seller. 2010's Brothers has sold 1,036,000 copies. In addition, Brothers won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album.

Josh Abbott Band's Small Town Family Dream bows at #15. This is the third release by the country-rock group from Texas…Tiesto's Club Life, Volume 2: Miami bows at #16. The dance artist first charted in 2006.

The Think Like A Man soundtrack dips from #21 to #22 in its third week. It's #1 on Top Soundtracks, displacing The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 And Beyond, which was on top for five weeks. The movie was #1 at the box-office for the second straight weekend. The movie is the biggest hit with a mostly African American cast since The Help was #1 at the box-office for three weekends in August. Think Like A Man is based on a best-selling book by Steve Harvey.

Maroon 5's Hands All Over leaps from #65 to #23 in its 52nd week. The album has sold 1,079,000 copies. It's the group's third million-selling album. Songs About Jane has sold 4,819,000 copies since its release in 2002. It Won't Be Soon Before Long has sold 2,275,000 copies since its release in 2007. You may detect a downward drift in the group's album sales even though its singles success and TV exposure are at a peak. That's how it goes sometimes (see: The Black Eyed Peas.)

Two 1970s chart-toppers return to the charts. Barry Manilow's Live In London opens at #24. Carole King's The Legendary Demos bows at #56. This is Manilow's fourth live album to crack the chart. King's album was released to coincide with the release of her autobiography, A Natural Woman.

Whitney Houston's 2000 album Whitney: The Greatest Hits jumps from #35 to #28 in its 41st week. It returns to #1 on Top Catalog Albums, dethroning Adele's 19. This is the Houston album's eighth week at #1 on the catalog chart. All have come since her death in February.

As of this week, Luther Vandross has sold 20 million albums since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales for Billboard in 1991. Vandross sold millions more albums in the 10 years before that: His debut album, Never Too Much, was released in late summer 1981. Vandross, who died in 2005, is among the top R&B balladeers of all time.

Quiz Answer: Tina Turner's Private Dancer was #1 when the Top Music Videocassettes chart was introduced in March 1985. Turner's album of the same name logged 11 weeks at #3 from September to December 1984. (Many of you probably guessed Madonna. I'll give you half-credit. She was the second female artist to top the chart. Her Madonna video hit #1 that May.)

Bob Dylan last week became the first rock artist to be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest honor bestowed on a U.S. civilian. (Two previous recipients of the medal are in the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame, but they aren't rock artists, per se. I'm talking about Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin and blues legend B.B. King.) According to a White House statement, the medal recognizes "individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interest of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors." Translation: It's a big deal. Here's a sobering item: Dylan, 70, is older than the last three U.S. Presidents. Bill Clinton and George W. Bush are both 65. Barack Obama is 50.

Coming Attractions: Carrie Underwood's Blown Away is expected to "blow away" the competition and debut at #1 next week. Many other albums are vying for top 10 debuts, including Now 42, Norah Jones' Little Broken Hearts, B.o.B's Strange Clouds, Marilyn Manson's Born Villain, the SMASH soundtrack and The Avengers Assemble soundtrack. Also due: Santigold's Master Of My Make-Believe and Rufus Wainwright's Out Of The Game.

Useless Information: Jason Mraz's Love Is A Four Letter Word is the second album by an artist named Jason to debut and peak at #2 in the past 18 months. Jason Aldean's My Kinda Party stalled in the runner-up spot in November 2010.

Jack White Scores First No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart

Jack White visits the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200 for the first time, as his debut solo set, "Blunderbuss," arrives with 138,000 copies sold according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's the rocker's first No. 1 in any form -- he missed the top with his other bands the White Stripes, the Raconteurs and the Dead Weather. (However, they collectively notched seven top 10 sets.)

The highest chart of any of those band's releases was the White Stripes' 2007 album "Icky Thump," which bowed and peaked at No. 2 with a 223,000 first week. (It was stuck behind Bon Jovi's No. 1-debuting "Lost Highway," with 292,000.)

The rest of the top four this week are all holdovers, as Adele's "21" moves 3-2 (84,000; down 6%), Lionel Richie's "Tuskegee" slips 1-3 (78,000; down 31%) and One Direction's "Up All Night" rises 5-4 (50,000; down 9%). The latter crosses the half-million sales mark this week, as its to-date total climbs to 541,000. It is the fifth-largest selling album this year in the U.S. (Adele's "21," by far, leads the pack, with 3.1 million moved just in 2012. Its overall total is 8.9 million.)

The Billboard 200's second-highest debut belongs to Lee Brice's "Hard 2 Love," which enters at No. 5 with 46,000. It's the country singer's second album and first top 10, following 2010's "Love Like Crazy," which debuted and peaked at No. 44.

Right behind Brice is the debut of fellow country act Kip Moore, with his first album "Up All Night" at No. 6 (37,000). Yes, there are two identically-titled albums in the top 10 this week thanks to Moore and One Direction. Moore's current single, "Somethin' 'Bout a Truck," holds at No. 9 on the Country Songs chart this week.

The fourth and final arrival in the top 10 is the Wanted's self-titled U.S. debut, which bows at No. 7 with 34,000. The set (released only in the U.S. and Canada) is a compilation of singles from the U.K. vocal group's two previous studio albums, along with two newly-recorded songs. (The act's two earlier studio sets, a self-titled 2010 effort and 2011's "Battleground," were only released outside of America.) The Wanted's first worldwide studio album is due this fall.

As for the rest of the top 10: Nicki Minaj's "Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded" descends 6-8 (32,000; down 33%), Gotye's "Making Mirrors" falls 7-9 (32,000; down 28%) and Jason Mraz's "Love is a Four Letter Word" tumbles 2-10 (29,000; down 71%).

Over on the Digital Songs chart, Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know" (featuring Kimbra), retakes the No. 1 slot, rising one position with 414,000 downloads (down 11%). Last week's No. 1, Maroon 5's "Payphone" featuring Wiz Khalifa, falls to No. 2 with 330,000 (down 33%).

Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" hits a new high, rising 5-3 with 221,000 (up less than 1%) while fun.'s "We Are Young" (featuring Janelle Monae) falls 3-4 with 207,000 (down 18%).

Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend" moves 4-5 (192,000; down 18%) while Wiz Khalifa's new "Work Hard, Play Hard" debuts at No. 6 with 172,000. One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful" is down 6-7 (170,000; down 13%), Flo Rida's "Wild Ones" (featuring Sia) goes 7-8 (152,000; down 10%) and Nicki Minaj's "Starships" drops 8-9 (151,000; down 1%). The Wanted's "Glad You Came" closes out the top 10, falling one slot, with 143,000 at No. 10 (down 3%).

Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending April 30) totaled 5.41 million units, down 6% compared to the sum last week (5.72 million) and up less than 1% compared to the comparable sales week of 2011 (5.38 million). Year to date album sales stand at 100.97 million, down 1% compared to the same total at this point last year (101.88 million).

Digital track sales this past week totaled 25.52 million downloads, down 1% compared to last week (25.91 million) and up 1% stacked next to the comparable week of 2011 (25.31 million). Year to date track sales are at 470 million, up 7% compared to the same total at this point last year (438.35 million).

Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2011 when: Adele's "21" continued to reign atop the tally for a seventh nonconsecutive week with 155,000 (up 26%) sold. Meanwhile, Nos. 2-8 and 10 were all debuts. The highest new entry was Beastie Boys' "Hot Sauces Committee Part Two" at No. 2 with 128,000.

Gotye Still Atop Hot 100, Carly Rae Jepsen Hits Top 5
by Gary Trust, N.Y. | May 02, 2012

Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know," featuring Kimbra, spends a third week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart. As it maintains its reign, the song becomes the first to tally three weeks of digital sales of at least 400,000.

"Somebody" sold 414,000 downloads (down 11%) in the April 23-29 tracking week, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and rebounds 2-1 on the Digital Songs chart. The track registered sales of 463,000 the previous week and 542,000 the week before that.

Previously, three other songs logged two weeks each of digital sales of more than 400,000: Flo Rida's "Right Round" (Feb. 28, March 7, 2009), Bruno Mars' "Grenade" (Jan 8, 15, 2011) and Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" (Feb. 26, March 5, 2011).

Radio helps fuel the sustained stratospheric sales of "Somebody," as the song adds top Airplay Gainer honors on the Hot 100 for a second week. It rises 6-3 on the Radio Songs chart with 106 million in all-format audience (up 24%), according to Nielsen BDS. It spends a ninth week at No. 1 on Alternative Songs and charges 11-7 on Pop Songs. The cut, meanwhile, tops the On-Demand Songs list for a third week, with 1.4 million on-demand streams and a 1% increase in overall streaming, according to BDS.

The Hot 100's top three remains static from last week, with fun.'s "We Are Young," featuring Janelle Monae, holding at No. 2 for a third week after logging six weeks atop the Hot 100 and Maroon 5's "Payphone," featuring Wiz Khalifa, remaining at No. 3 after soaring onto the chart last week.

"Young" leads Radio Songs for a fourth frame with 137 million audience impressions (up 1%). The cut crowns Pop Songs for a fourth week and takes over atop Adult Pop Songs. On Digital Songs, "Young" dips 3-4 (207,000, down 18%). Despite its drop in rank and sales, the song passes 4 million sold to date. On On-Demand Songs, it holds at No. 2 (1.1 million, down 1%).

Following its grand entrance last week, "Payphone" experiences a 33% decrease in digital sales to 330,000. The decline is not entirely unexpected, given that last week's sales were buoyed by Maroon 5 and Khalifa having performed the song on NBC's "The Voice" April 16. Still, radio is quickly warming to "Payphone," which bounds 36-19 in its second week on Radio Songs (48 million, up 46%). Streaming for the song is likewise building rapidly, as it blasts onto On-Demand Songs at No. 13 (501,000, up 139%).

The Wanted's former No. 3-peaking hit "Glad You Came" reverses course, rising 5-4, while Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" enters the Hot 100's top five (7-5), gaining in sales, airplay and streaming. "Maybe" moves 5-3 on Digital Songs (221,000, up less than 1%) and 35-25 on Radio Songs (41 million, up 23%) and stays at No. 3 on On-Demand Songs (978,000, up 3%).

Flo Rida's "Wild Ones," featuring Sia, remains at No. 6 on the Hot 100 for a third week, while Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend" tumbles 4-7. After its strong start, including a massive opening digital sales frame of 521,000 four weeks ago, "Boyfriend" experiences a setback in airplay, dipping 13-14 on Radio Songs (55 million, down 3%), while continuing its descent (4-5) on Digital Songs (192,000, down 18%). Streaming for "Boyfriend," however, continues to build, with the song earning the top Streaming Gainer award on the Hot 100. It pushes 6-5 on On-Demand Songs with a 9% gain to 804,000.

Despite the song's slide on the Hot 100, Radio Songs and Digital Songs, Island Def Jam is continuing to promote "Boyfriend" to radio, owing its overall audience loss to some stations having backed off from spinning it especially heavily upon its arrival. Also in the song's favor going forward: its highly-anticipated video is set to premiere on MTV tomorrow (May 3) at 7:50 p.m. ET. It will be available on VEVO directly after.

Filling out the Hot 100's top 10, which is devoid of any new entries this week, Nicki Minaj's "Starships" lifts 9-8; One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful" drops 8-9; and, Kelly Clarkson's former three-week No. 1 "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" is a non-mover at No. 10.
The most celebrated and important female artist of the last half-century-plus-who else but the one and only Madonna.

Not a lot of note going on, sales-wise, for the Idols this week. Kelly Clarkson's still the top seller, with Stronger. Of course, that'll change next week when Carrie Underwood's first-week numbers for Blown Away come in. Here's a good sign for those first-week numbers: Carrie's Some Hearts jumps back into The Billboard 200 this week, with a week-over-week sales increase of 25%, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Also, last week's Queen theme on American Idol meant a big jump in sales for Queen's Greatest Hits album -- 255%.

This is a new peak for the Christian pop singer's current album, which is impressing considering it's been released 13 months ago and has been charting for 31 weeks so far. It repeaks at No. 2 on the Folk Albums Chart and reaches No. 1 on the Christian Albums Chart for the very first time :D .
