Billboard 200/Catalog Albums Chart Update - May 12, 2012
Whitney Review: Whitney Houston's "Whitney: The Greatest Hits" narrowly beats Adele's "19" to return to the top of the Catalog chart for the eighth time, all since her passing in February. "19" has been #1 for ten weeks in 2012, and only Guns 'N Roses' "Greatest Hits" has also been to the top of the chart this year. In the 12 weeks since February 25, the first chart reflecting posthumous sales for Whitney, "Whitney" and "19" have been in the top three constantly, and have been the top two albums in every week except two in March where Houston's "The Bodyguard" soundtrack overtook Adele for #2, and another week in March when Guns 'N Roses dropped Houston to #2 and Adele to #3.
Classics Rising: Two "catalog classics" make large gains on the Catalog chart this week. Bob Marley & The Wailers' "Legend", #2 on the Catalog longevity list and #1 by far in weeks spent at #1 on the chart, surges from #34 to #3 to crack the Top 3 for the first time since July 23. It was last higher on the chart on February 19, 2011, when it was #2. It's benefitting from "Marley: The Original Soundtrack", spending its second week on the Billboard 200 and falling from #122 to #162. (In this case, "Legend" is doing even better than the soundtrack album that is generating its sales increase!)
Queen's "Greatest Hits" re-enters the chart at #5 a week after Queen music was featured on "American Idol". This album last spent most of the year on the Catalog chart in 2008, and since then has rung up only 23 weeks on the chart. This week, it reaches its highest level since December 8, 2007, when it was #3.
New On The Charts: Only one of the seventeen albums coming onto this week's Catalog chart is a new entry, just as there was only one new entry last week (out of 19). In a weird coincidence, both new entries came in at #50. This week, Christina Aguilera's "Bionic" enters at the bottom. It reached #3 on the Billboard 200 on its release in June 2010, but spent only 14 weeks on the Billboard 200. Last week, Phish's "Junta" came in at #50. All of the sixteen returning albums have already spent at least one week on the Catalog chart in 2012 before this week.
Thirteen of this week's returning entries also return to the Billboard 200, with no brand-new entries. Of those thirteen, two are returning for the first time in 2012: Eric Church's "Carolina", last seen on the Billboard 200 in September of last year, and Carrie Underwood's "Some Hearts", last on the Billboard 200 in December 2010.
Catalog Chart History - Christina Aguilera:
1. Christina Aguilera (1 wk, Peak #47, Charted in 2001) (BB200: 97 wks, #1, Debut 1999)
2. Stripped (9 wks, Peak #14, Charted in 2006-07) (BB200: 79 wks, #2, Debut 2002)
3. Keeps Gettin' Better: A Decade Of Hits (6 wks, #2, Charted in 2010-11) (BB200: 23 wks, #9, Debut 2008)
4. Bionic (1 wk, Peak #50, Charted in 2012) (BB200: 14 wks, #3, Debut 2010)
Milestones: Carrie Underwood's "Some Hearts" reaches 104 weeks, or two years, on the Catalog chart. It has been in the top 200 sellers for 78 of those 104 weeks, in addition to an extended 137-week run on the Billboard 200 as a current album. "Some Hearts" has only been on the Catalog chart for three weeks since the end of 2010, but you can expect Underwood's catalog sales to get a big boost from her new album "Blown Away", expected to debut atop the Billboard 200 next week.
Dr. Dre's "Dr. Dre -- 2001" reaches its 100th overall week among the top 200 sellers, over ten years after its original release.
Chart Multiples Update: The Band and The Black Keys leave the list, but three returning entries cause us to end up with six on this week's list:
1. Eminem: "Curtain Call" and "The Eminem Show" trade places on the chart; "Recovery" and "Marshall Mathers" hold about steady.
2. Whitney Houston: All of Whitney's charting titles rise this week on the heels of a "Glee" tribute, and "My Love Is Your Love" returns to the chart, resulting in five Houston albums on the tally. "Whitney: The Greatest Hits" returns to #1 but is the only Houston album in the top 10.
3. Lionel Richie: One more week in the top 10 with both of his hits albums.
4. Johnny Cash: "Super Hits" returns to the chart and joins "VH1 Storytellers" (with Willie Nelson).
5. Willie Nelson: His "Super Hits" also returns to rejoin "VH1 Storytellers".
6. Taylor Swift: "Fearless" climbs back out of the danger zone into the top 130. "Taylor Swift" returns to the Catalog chart, but not the Billboard 200.

Statistics: There were 46 Catalog albums on the Billboard 200 this week, three fewer than last week, but 5 more than the same week last year.
The Catalog #1 one year ago (May 14, 2011) was "19" by Adele (10th week) - the last week of a four-week run on top.
The Catalog #1 five years ago (May 12, 2007): "Closer" by Josh Groban. "Closer" entered the Catalog chart in 2005 and spent over 100 weeks there, finally rising to the top spot for the one and only time on this date.
The Catalog #1 ten years ago (May 11, 2002): "The Sickness" by Disturbed (5th week). It would remain at #1 until June 1.
The Catalog #1 fifteen years ago (May 10, 1997): The soundtrack from "Grease" (20th week). It was parked at #1 through June 21.
The Catalog #1 twenty years ago (May 9, 1992): "Time Pieces -- The Best Of Eric Clapton" (11th week). This ended a six-week run on top, but it would eventually return to #1 for another six months (26 weeks).

This results in a lot of upward motion, with albums by Bob Marley & The Wailers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Temptations, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Taylor Swift (Fearless), Lady Antebellum, Boyz II Men, Eric Clapton, Whitney Houston (self-titled), Aerosmith, and Barry White all making jumps of ten or more spots, along with 16 re-entries and one debut.
