So that's goodby to my poll choice

All three songs are amazing.

Without You is actually one of the earliest songs I remember to really have loved and it is the one that made me aware of Mariah

My All may get boring from time to time but overall it's pure greatness

Against All Odds really is one of the best covers of her career, guess you picked the best ones for your top 10  ...love that song, was always a fave of mine

Yes, she does! I loathe the Westlife version too. :D

I'm pretty sure we'll have an even bigger disagreement as to the ranking of a particular song higher up. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on that one.

Without You - Imo this is her best cover! I really love this, definitely among my top 10 Mariah's songs. It's actually the earliest song i've ever heard from her and what made me started to get interested in her. A classic. The best song on Music Box.

My All - I just really LOVE this, among top 5. Its latin vibe is very interesting and Mariah's vocal sounds so sexy here. This is also one of Mariah's songs which i sing frequently even in karaoke! Another classic. The best song on Butterfly.

Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now) - This is her 3rd best cover after Without You and Bringin'. I prefer the one with Westlife. Funny, but in 2000, i liked this song because Westlife on it, not Mariah. It was before i became a lamb.

Albums Intermission!!!

#8.

Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel.

Image

Mariah's latest studio concoction, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel holds the unfavourable honour of being Carey's only record to not attain Platinum certification in the US. Despite it's underwhelming sales, I actually think this album is a pretty solid effort. Though the highlight of the album is undoubtedly the gorgeous ballad, "I Wanna Know What Love Is", I think the record's main strength lies in its array of strong uptempo numbers. The album is far from a fan favourite and while I wouldn't herald it as her greatest work, credit must be given where it is due and Mariah certainly deserves some for this album. 6.1/10.

#7.

Butterfly.

Image

A fan favourite, Butterfly featured Mariah transitioning from Pop diva balladeer to this sexy, R&B vixen. Many critics and fans alike embraced Carey's transition and the album became a definitive record of the 90's. Though the album is a pretty consistent work of music throughout, I did miss hearing Carey's signature belts on some of the tracks. Nevertheless, I appreciate the fact that Carey took more creative control of her career and I'm thankful that she used it to give us a really solid album. The album sold well achieving 5X Platinum certification in the US as well as peaking #1 there and in Canada. 6.4/10.

#6.

Rainbow.

Image

Carey's last album released in the 90's, Rainbow garners quite a bit of criticism from fans and critics alike. Though panned as "rushed" and "unoriginal", I absolutely love some of the album tracks as noted by their high rankings on my countdown. For me, the album is a solid blend of some light-hearted, fun Pop tracks ("X-Girlfriend") and more emotional, R&B songs ("After Tonight", "Crybaby"). Though not as big a hit as it's predecessor, Rainbow did go on to sell more than 3 million copies in the US alone. Though I really do like the album, it does contain my all-time least fave MC song to date, the borefest that is "Bliss". 6.6/10.

Seriously, "Butterfly" at #7? :o :x

That is one of the best albums of all-time IMO and is without a doubt my #1 Mariah album. It's her most cohesive album to-date, and every track on the album is epic. The album also contains some of my favourite Mariah tracks to-date and to see "Rainbow" above a masterpiece is definitely cringeworthy.

"Butterfly" is Mariah's magnum opus and I can understand why - it's definitely her most personal, her most classic album to-date, I would say. It's also the album which made her the singer song-writer she is today (that is, her style of music). I feel the praise it gets from fans are definitely well-deserved as it is indeed amazing. The album has definitely no fillers and I do love all of the songs (my favourites being "Butterfly", "The Roof (Back In Time)", "Breakdown", "Fourth Of July", "Whenever You Call", "Outside"). That album is like a gem to me - if I had to live with one album, "Butterfly" is the one I'd select anyday.

As forRainbow, I definitely think you ranked it a little too high as it definitely doesn't deserve to be over "Daydream", or even "Glitter". Rainbow is full of fillers IMO, except for the phenomenal "Can't Take That Away (Mariah's Theme)", "Heartbreaker" and "Thank God I Found You" as well as a few more decent ones. The number of good tracks in the album could have been squeezed onto "Daydream" or "Butterfly" instead - I skip 2/3 of the album when I listen to it, and I have never done that for any other Mariah album before.

Memoirs is good, and is extremely underrated by the fans. It doesn't deserve the hate it gets as well, as it does include some stunning and spectacular tunes, but it definitely doesn't deserve to be over "Daydream".

"Without You" = over-rated by fans (and I guess people in general too, since it was such a massive hit for her overseas), but still a very powerful performance. I'd say it's...Top 40-worthy.

"My All" = epic, quite possibly my absolute favorite Mariah ballad! it would definitely be in my overall Top 5. that guitar, those lyrics...it's just perfection <3 "I can see you clearly, vividly emblazoned in my mind, and yet you're so far, like a distant star, I'm wishing on tonight..."

"Against All Odds" = another powerful performance on a cover! speaking of covers, this and "Without You" are probably my favorite covers of hers too, so it's nice to see you giving both of them so much love (although they're both a bit too high). I've probably mentioned this before on your daily chart, but it's nice to see you representing the original over the Westlife duet version, since I agree that it's much better with just Mariah. I'd say this is Top 40-worthy too.

Butterfly at No. 7 is crazy, but I'm still very relieved to see it's at least above Memoirs!

THIS

Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel - I used to underrate this record, but now, i finally can appreciate this album. It's a solid record, although there are so many midtempo ballads, it's my 3rd fave album of her of 00s after E=MC2 and Charmbracelet.
Top tracks: Obsessed, HATEU, I Want To Know What Love Is, Up Out My Face, Ribbon
Fillers: The Impossible, More Than Just A Friend

Butterfly - :-? I must be in the minority, Butterfly is my 2nd least favorite Mariah's studio album, only behind Glitter. This album is so overrated imo, the singles are great, it has 2 of my all time favorite, My All and Honey but most of the album tracks are just too boring imo. This album also has 3 of among my least fave songs of her ever, Babydoll, The Beautiful Ones and Fourth Of July. And this albums also has one of the most overrated Mariah's song ever, The Roof which is not that great imo.
Top tracks: My All, Honey, Butterfly
Fillers: Babydoll, The Beautiful Ones, Breakdown, Butterfly Reprise, Fourth Of July

Rainbow - Glad that you rank this above Butterfly, it totally deserves it! Rainbow is easily among my top 5 favorite albums of her. It's so underrated and not as bad as many people think. It has some variety. Rainbow also has 2 of her best interludes ever, Rainbow and Vulnerability. Did I Do That is the weakest song but it's also that bad, still catchy.
Top tracks: Thank God I Found You, Heartbreaker, After Tonight, Crybaby, Rainbow, Vulnerability, Petals, Bliss

I knew you would be in disagreement with my ranking for Butterfly. For me, the record has more than it's fair share of filler and while I do admit that it's one of Carey's more personal records and definitely it signalled a change in sound for her, it just pales in comparison to some other MC records. But I totally respect your opinion. :)

#7.

Prisoner.

Image

The highest ranking track from Mariah's self-titled debut album and the second-highest non-single, "Prisoner" comes in at #7. The song is just brilliant in every way imaginable, in my opinion. It's fun, uptempo, empowering, and that rap bridge towards the end is just delightful. This should've been released as a single. It's one of MC's biggest hits that never happened, a true masterpiece.

#6.

If It's Over.

Image

The fourth of the poll options to fall and the highest ranking track from Emotions, "If It's Over" comes in at #6. When I first attempted to unearth the gems of Carey's discography last year, "If It's Over" was one of the songs I came across. Immediately, I was taken aback by the vocal masterclass performance that Mariah displayed. After checking out some live performances, most notably her SNL performance, I was floored by the phenomenal talent that graced my computer screen. For me, the best part of the song is where Carey sings in her lower register, "It isn't fair" and then she reaches for her higher register and croons, "It isn't right".

"Prisoner" = I wouldn't put this nearly as high as you did (Top 50, maybe Top 40), but I still really love it! EASILY the best non-single on her debut (and one of the best non-singles of her career, really). it's sounds pretty dated today, but it's just so incredibly catchy! the raps are a bit laughable, but in a very endearing way ;) "you can't do that, I'm not a doormat, you're just a player, that's not my format..."

"If It's Over" = whew, I was afraid this would come out on top, so I'm glad to see it actually missed the Top 5 entirely  I've tried to appreciate this more, but I just don't care for it. it's not "Sweetheart" or "Migrate"-level awful, but it's definitely one of my least favorite tracks on Emotions...which is one of my least favorite albums of hers. her voice does sound fantastic, though, no doubt about that.

Prisoner - Very surprised to see this song so high, but i think it's catchy and her vocal is powerful. Also she does some rap which makes the song more interesting. It's my 2nd fave non single from her debut after All In Your Mind.

If It's Over - I always find this song so overrated, especially her Grammy performance. It's just okay for me. Her belting notes are amazing but that's all. As a whole song, it's just fine.

Whoa! Your opinion's exactly the opposite of what I expected. I thought you'd like "If It's Over" more. Rarely do I ever hear people deem that track "overrated". The love for "Prisoner" is much appreciated, though. 8-)

Albums Intermission!!!

#5.

Emotions.

Image

Carey's sophomore record, Emotions was released in 1991 to generally mixed reviews and a steep drop in sales from her debut record. Bar "The Wind", which I think is an absolute atrocity, I believe Emotions is a very solid record. It features spine-tingling, hair-raising, masterclass vocal performances ("If It's Over"), uptempo inspirational ballads ("Make It Happen") and some wicked tracks where Mimi explores that superhuman whistle register of hers ("Emotions"). It's a very diverse CD and that makes for one of her most enjoyable pieces of work to date. The album peaked within the Top 5 in the US, the UK, and Canada, and achieved a 4X Platinum certification in the US and Canada as well as a Platinum certification in the UK. 7.1/10.

#4.

Mariah Carey.

Image

Mariah's self-titled debut record introduced her to the world in a very big way as the album was a commercial and critical success. For me, there is no real clunker on Mariah Carey, though, admittedly, the album would've been fine without the inclusion of "I Don't Wanna Cry" and "Vanishing". The album tracks are all solid for the most part and this is definitely one of the greatest albums recorded in the 90's. It also features my second favourite non-single from Mariah, the brilliant "Prisoner". 7.3/10.

#3.

Music Box.

Image

With a whopping 32 million copies sold worldwide, Music Box became and remains Mariah's highest selling album and is one of the best selling records of all-time. The song features her best inspirational ballad to date, the legendary and incomparable "Hero" as well as some jaw-dropping ballads such as "Anytime You Need A Friend" and "Without You". Amazingly enough, Music Box actually placed the most entries in my Top 20, with four of it's album tracks featured. For me, the album contains no clunkers and the only underwhelming track is "Everything Fades Away" and as it's on the international edition, it's presence can be easily overlooked. All in all, Music Box is a fantastic record, well-deserving of being Carey's best seller. Music Box is my favourite 90's album from Mariah. 7.6/10.

Prisoner is my favourite track off her debut besides the title track. It's so epic and deserved to have a chance as a single over the mess that is "Someday" (which was a poor single IMO). Her "rap" verses in the song are also unique and she has never done that ever since. I think she makes a good rapper as her rapping is in sync with the rhythm TBH . It's one of her "forgotten singles" and though I wouldn't rank it as high as you did, I'm glad to see this track get some love as usually tracks from her debut are rarely mentioned by her fans. 8.5/10

If It's Over is a great track, but I think you ranked it too high. It seems to receive high praise from fans but I don't really understand the epicness of the song. Her live performances of this song (particularly the SNL one) are a few of the best performance in history. It is a standout from "Emotions", though. This track would be quite high on my chart, but definitely not as high as you did rank it. 8/10

Emotions is a decent album... is has grown on me a bit since I last said I disliked it. More notably, the album has gems like "And You Don't Remember", "Can't Let Go", "Make It Happen" and "If It's Over". The rest are either average or duds, though.. so it will not probably make my top 5 Mariah albums anyway.

Her debut is a great album, but in particular, the middle part of the album is a filler-fest. I don't really like any of the tracks there, and I feel the album would have been more cohesive and perfect as a whole without those fillers. I do know some of them are fan favourites, though. It'll probably not be in my top 5 as well.

Music Box is yet another cohesive album for the first 7 tracks, and the last 4 are fillers. It's by far from being her best album, but it isn't that bad as well, and this has a shot of ranking inside my top 5 Mariah albums. However, despite the fillers, the album does include some of Mariah's best tracks ever - particularly the outstanding "Anytime You Need A Friend" and her signature song - "Hero".
