The album as a whole is exceptional and this era alone is worth many artists entire careers !
I was 12 too, I remember staying up until midnight on a school night with VCR fired up to record it.

8. Like a Prayer
This is probably Madonna's signature song in the UK. It is definitely seen as her greatest work and receives endless praise from critics and the public. What's amazing about it is, people who like anything but pop (rock fans, rap fans, jazz fans...), even they recognise this as one of the best of all time.

For me, this has always been one of those songs I've known forever. It was released not long after I was born, so I don't remember it being released at all, but I'd say I can remember it being on TV or being played by my mom since I was about 3 years old. And even when I was a kid, I knew this video was something special. I obviously didn't understand all the controversy around it, but it's a captivating video which you can't help but watch. It's one of my favourite videos of all time. Genius!

As for the song, I like the first half - it's pleasant. But when the guitar riff kicks in, I get chills! And even now, the second half of the song gives me goosebumps. It's really is chilling (can't think of another word) and paired with the video (Madonna and the burning crosses in the background) - it just makes for one of the most epic moments in entertainment history in my opinion.

Just as usual I have to disagree with you on this one Denise !
IMO "Like a Prayer" is one of her Top 3 songs of all time! It IS pure brilliantness, Magic!
It´s one of those songs you have to listen over and over and over again to try to capture the essence of it! The video is beyond words !
Madonna took pop music to a whole other level when she released "Like a Prayer"... a level that has yet to be matched!

Girl Gone Wild in the top 10 is more controversial than the Like A Prayer music video...! :P

"Like A Prayer", objectively speaking, is probably the best song Madonna has ever recorded. It's not my all-time fave (that honour is reserved for "Papa Don't Preach") but it's definitely a legendary track, a timeless classic. 8-)

7. Deeper and Deeper
When I initially made my list, I put 'Deeper and Deeper' at #17. I've always thought it was a pretty good dance song, but nothing special, so I rarely listened to it.

Thank goodness I decided to revisit the song! I have been playing it non-stop for the past 2 weeks - I LOVE IT! It's an AWESOME dance song (much better than 'Vogue' IMO). I love the early 90's sound and Madonna's vocals are perfection. This song just brings out my inner diva so much and I'm glad I've started to appreciate it a lot more.

If it hadn't been for all the 'Sex' backlash at the time, I think this could have definitely been one of Madonna's biggest singles to date (it is essentially Vogue II), so it's a shame it is one of the most forgotten and underrated songs of her career.

I agree it´s forgotten and also think it´s one of her best songs! But I would´ve ranked it bellow Top 10 !
BTW, It´s really interesting to see Madonna's singles through a different point of view like yours(not a long time fan). Many surprises and definitely many choices that would've never made into a die hard´s list!
I´m quite enjoying this!

Thanks! Some definite surprises yet to come! I'd say pretty much the entire top 6 could be seen as atypical choices!

And you must be pleased to see 2 'Erotica' singles in my top 10! Which is your favourite single from that album?

Deeper and Deeper is my jam! It has grown a lot on me :D Very sweet and edgy at the same me. The chorus is so fun to sing along with, making my voice really low haha.

Deeper and Deeper has a cool video too. I truly do believe it's her biggest hit that never was.
