Officialcharts.com usually changes the charts to the new week at 8 pm, but this time it doesn't do so... Where's the problem?

The UK Singles chart has a brand new number 1; after a 4 week run at the top, Carly Rae Jepson’s ‘Call me maybe’ notches up another 80,000 sales, but slides a place to make way for the highest new entry, a solo debut for former N-Dubz star and X Factor judge Tulisa. Tulisa’s ‘Young’ enters at number 1, a feat that she only achieved once as part of N-Dubz, when they were featured on Tinchy Stryder’s number 1 hit entitled ‘Number 1’ in 2009. ‘Young’ racks up an impressive 1 week sales tally of almost 122000 copies, the second-fastest selling song of the year (behind DJ Fresh’s ‘Hot right now’ which sold 128000 copies in its first week).

Frustratingly for Fun., ‘We are young’ sits at number 3 for a third consecutive week, now in its 4th week inside the top 10.

The second highest new entry belongs to Barbadian 4 piece band Cover Drive; their third single ‘Sparks’ instantly becomes their third top 10 hit, debuting at number 4. It follows up ‘Twilight’ which reached number 1 in February.

Right behind is a chart climber; after a 10 place advance last week, this week Alex Clare’s ‘Too close’ rises another place to a new peak of number 5.

Train’s ‘Drive by’ advances 3 places to number 7 in its 3rd charting week, it now becomes the biggest hit of their career, beating the number 10 peak of ‘Drops of Jupiter’.

Marina and the Diamonds has cause to celebrate, not only does she have the number 1 album (see below) but her latest single ‘Primadonna’ is a climber in its third charting week, rising 2 places back to its peak to date of number 11; midweek flashes suggested it was on course to become her first UK Top 10 single, but it was not to be.

Interestingly, 3 of this week’s climbers are former number 1’s; Katy Perry’s ‘Part of me’ climbs back up 8 to 16, David Guetta and Sia’s ‘Titanium’ u-turns 4 place to 15 and rising 4 to 19 is Chris Brown’s ‘Turn up the music’.

At 21 is the arrival of a 32nd UK Top 40 hit for Barbadian super star Rihanna; ‘Where have you been’ follows up ‘Talk that talk’ which peaked at 25 in December and again in March.

At 23 is a new entry and in fact the UK Top 40 debut for UK Electronic music producer Nick Douwma, better known as Sub Focus. His single entitled ‘Out of the blue’ features UK Singer, songwriter Alice Gold who also makes her chart debut.

At 26 is a new entry for Swedish DJ Tim Bergling, a third hit under the name of Avicii; ‘Silhouettes’ follows up ‘Levels’ which peaked at 4 in December and went on to spend a total of 14 weeks on the countdown.

TV talent shows often cause back catalogue tracks to re- enter the chart, but this week performances on ‘The Voice’ not only triggers the return of James Vincent McMorrow’s 2011 number 21 hit ‘Higher love’ at 37 and Train’s 2010 number 18 hit ‘Hey soul sister’ at 38, but it gives a struggling recent release a helping hand; though released as a single several weeks ago, Lana Del Rey’s ‘Blue jeans’ had failed to reach the top 40, this week entering at 32, it follows up ‘Video games’ and ‘Born to die’, both of which peaked at number 9.

The final new entry belongs to UK DJ Flux Pavilion and UK Singer and Rapper Example; ‘Daydreamer’ enters at 39, a first UK Top 40 success for Flux Pavilion and 11th for Example, following up ‘Midnight run’ which peaked at 30 last December. Example’s biggest hit to date is ‘Changed the way you kiss me’ which spent a fortnight at the top last June.

The big losers on the singles chart are Calvin Harris and Ne-Yo’s ‘Let’s go’ which slides from 2 to 6 and Jessie J and David Guetta’s ‘Laserlight’ which dips 3 places after a fortnight at number 5.

Next week’s singles chart is likely to include new entries for Rita Ora’s ‘RIP’, Engelbert Humperdinck’s ‘Love Will Set You Free’ and Far East Movement & Justin Bieber’s ‘Live My Life’.

The highest new entry on the albums chart also goes straight to the top, Welsh star Marina and the Diamonds second album ‘Electra heart’ becomes her first number 1 hit, following up ‘Family Jewels’ which peaked at 5 in 2010. Marina stops Lana Del Rey’s ‘Born to die’ from returning to the summit, rising a place to number 2, while last week’s chart topper, Jack White’s ‘Bulnderbuss’ slides to 3.

At 4 is a new entry for US Singer, song-writer Norah Jones; ‘Little broken hearts’ is her 5th hit album, following up ‘The fall’ which peaked at 24 in 2009; her biggest hit albums to date are ‘Not too late’. ‘Feels like home’ and ‘Come away with me’, all of which reached number 1.

3 other long running albums climb a place within the top 10; Olly Murs’ ‘In case you didn’t know’ is up to 6, Jessie J’s ‘Who you are’ is up 7 and rising to 8 is Emeli Sande’s ‘Our version of events’.

It's a bank holiday weekend - Mayday Holiday tomorrow. Sometimes there are no monkeys in the OCC building until Monday or even Tuesday. Though even at Christmas we get at least a top 75 straight away. This is very annoying.

It's 7pm they update (we put our clocks forward an hour a few weeks ago for British Summer Time - we put them back an hour in October).

ALBUMS: Marina & The Diamonds' second album Electra Hearts beats faster than its rivals to debut atop the album chart on sales of 21,358 copies. Undoubtedly helped by the success of second single, Primadonna, which bounces 13-11 this week (29,896 sales), the album eclipses the top position of Marina's first album, The Family Jewels, which debuted and peaked at number five although it fails to equal its first week sales of 27,618 copies.

The Family Jewels fell out of the Top 10 after just one week, never to return, and has thus far sold 177,268 copies. Electra Heart's chart-topping debut comes just days after Marina had to postpone her UK tour due to throat problems, and has been given overwhelmingly favourable reviews.

An appearance on The Voice UK results show eight days ago gave new impetus to Lana Del Rey's debut album Born To Die, which climbs for the fourth week in a row, moving 3-2 with sales increasing 42.70% to 17,865. Del Rey performed Blue Jeans on the show and although the track may struggle to match the number nine peak of both Video Games and the album's title track, it too benefits jumping 50-32 (9,637 sales) to reach a new peak.

Produced and co-written by Danger Mouse (Brian Burton), ...Little Broken Hearts is Norah Jones' fifth studio album, and debuts at number four (15,988 sales), following her appearance on Later...With Jools Holland. Although its performance compares poorly to Jones' first three albums - Come Away With Me, Feels Like Home and Not Too Late, which topped the chart in 2003, 2004 and 2007, respectively - it easily beats her fourth album, The Fall, which debuted and peaked at number 24 in 2009. Since then, a compilation (Featuring) fell well short of the Top 75, reaching number 128. Two albums by her occasional country group The Little Willies have fallen short of the Top 40 too, with an eponymous 2006 debut reaching number 41, and follow-up For The Good Times debuting and peaking 16 weeks ago at number 116.

Born Villain is Marilyn Manson's debut release for Cooking Vinyl, and enters the chart this week at number 14 (6,933 sales), eclipsing his seventh and last studio album for Interscope, The High End Of Low, which reached number 19 in 2009. It is his sixth Top 20 album in all.

Also new to the Top 75 this week: Radlands (number 40, 3,304 sales), the fourth album by London quartet The Mystery Jets, and their most successful since 2006 debut, Making Dens, reached number 32; One Man Army (number 51, 2,485 sales), Scots band Kassidy's follow-up to 2011 debut Hope St, which reached number 55; and Bag Of Bones (number 56, 2,328 sales), a surprise return to chart duty for Swedish/Norwegian rock veterans Europe, who first charted in 1986, reaching number nine with The Final Countdown in the wake of the number one single of the same name, and last charted in 1991 with Prisoners In Paradise.

With leg one of their Ultimate Tour successfully completed, the reconvened Steps have issued a tour edition of their Ultimate Collection. The album, which made a surprise debut at number one last October, jumps 64-32, reaching a 25 week high on sales of 4,242 copies raising its 30 week tally to 188,514.

After debuting at number one last week, Jack White's Blunderbuss dips to number three (17,203 sales). Rufus Wainwright's Out Of The Game beats a hasty retreat, falling 5-31 (4,296 sales), while Feeder's Generation Freakshow - which debuted at number 13 last week - tumbles to number 72 (1,681 sales).

Adele's 21, number two last week, falls to number five. Its sales are off marginally (0.60%) to 15,365 - its lowest weekly total since its release 67 weeks ago - but, as reported elsewhere, it has now surpassed Michael Jackson's Thriller to become the UK's fifth biggest selling album of all-time with cumulative sales of 4,282,629. As it now trails only Queen's Greatest Hits, The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Abba's Gold: Greatest Hits and Oasis' What's The Story Morning Glory, it is the biggest selling album ever by a solo artist.

Sparked into life by the use of 2011 single Too Close in the TV advertising campaign for Microsoft Internet Explorer, Alex Clare's debut album The Lateness Of The Hour continues to climb, moving 26-17 (6,036 sales). Too Close also moves higher, edging 6-5 (49,248 sales).

Overall album sales are up 2.18% week-on-week at 1,519,267 - 2.78% below same week 2011 sales of 1,562,663.

SINGLES: Emulating cousin and former N-Dubz bandmate Dappy - whose first solo single No Regrets debuted at number one last October - Tulisa races to the top of the chart with introductory solo single, Young. No Regrets sold 96,639 copies on its debut but with Young racing to first week sales of 121,694 - a total second only in 2012 to the 127,998 copies that Hot Right Now sold for DJ Fresh feat. Rita Ora on its debut 11 weeks earlier - Tulisa has Contostavlos family bragging rights.

Tulisa's timely intervention prevents Carly Rae Jepsen from becoming the first female solo artist in chart history to open her career by topping the chart five weeks in a row. Jepsen's debut smash, Call Me Maybe, dips to number two after four straight weeks at the apex, but continues to sell strongly, with a further 80,328 sales last week raising its career tally to 514,759.

We Are Young is number three for the third straight week for Fun feat. Janelle Monae - but its sales slip for the first time, ebbing 7.11% to 65,603.

14 weeks after topping the chart with second single Twilight, Caribbean trio Cover Drive - named after a flashy cricket shot - fail to reach the boundary with follow-up Sparks, which debuts at number four (51,109 sales). Meanwhile, their Barbadian compatriot Rihanna racks up her 32nd Top 40 hit, with Where Have You Been - which prematurely reached number 61 as an album rack last December - re-entering the Top 200 at number 21 (14,824 sales). The track is a collaboration with We Found Love cohort Calvin Harris - who gets 'featuring' billing on some promotional releases of Where Have You Been but misses out on the final credits.

Another track featuring Rihanna that charted earlier than it should have was Take Care - the title track off Canadian rapper Drake's second album, which reached number nine six months ago. Despite little active encouragement from Drake's label - the track never made the Top 50 of the radio airplay chart, and had no video until a fortnight ago - Take Care has been a remarkably consistent and constant feature of the Top 40 ever since. With the promotional videoclip debuting at number 10 on the TV airplay chart last week, and now jumping to number six, demand for the track is increasing again. On its 26th consecutive week in the Top 50, it slips 25-27 but achieves its highest sales (12,510) for 16 weeks, to raise its career tally to 356,963. It is Drake's second biggest selling track, trailing only his previous Rihanna collaboration, the chart-topping What's My Name, which has sold 79,036 copies since its 2010 release.

Also new to the Top 40: Out The Blue (number 23, 14,096 sales), the fifth Top 75 entry but first Top 30 hit for Nick Douwma, aka Sub Focus, with vocals from Alice Gold; fellow dubstep act Flux Pavilion's first Top 40 hit Daydreamer (number 39, 8,060 sales); and Silhouettes (number 26, 12,592 sales), the latest hit by Swedish DJ Tim Bergling as Avicii.

With Drive By shooting 10-7 on sales up 48.59% week-on-week to 37,825, it becomes the highest charting single in Train's chart career. It has a powerful enough effect to reverse the decline of parent album California 37, which suffered a 10-29 second frame decline last week but now bounces to number 25, with sales increasing 10.75% to 4,686.

Other singles in the Top 10 not mentioned elsewhere: Let's Go dives 2-6 for Calvin Harris feat. Ne-Yo (41,119 sales); LaserLight dims 5-8 for Jessie J feat. David Guetta (34,784 sales); Starships hovers at number nine for Nicki Minaj (31,823 sales); and Somebody That I Used To Know falls 7-10 for Gotye feat. Kimbra (30,517 sales).

iTunes' 59p songs offers continue to have an effect on the bottom end of the chart. 67 of the 68 titles offered at that price last week had previously appeared in the Top 100 at some point - but not Tribute by Tenacious D. Said song - a comedy/rock track, like most of their output - finally breaches the top half of the chart at number 84, after selling 3,089 copies last week. Although a hit single in some countries, the 2002 track was only available as an album track here until 2004, when it was first offered as a standalone download, like the rest of the band's output. It has since sold a very respectable 161,343 copies. Its success mirrors that of the duo's self-titled 2002 debut album, on which it features. In a little under 10 years the album has never topped the number 38 position it occupied on its eighth week on release but has proved to be a major seller, with a to date tally of 581,609.

Overall singles sales are up 5.25% week-on-week at 3,504,650 - 16.06% above same week 2011 sales of 3,019,753.

It's ever-harder in the era of ongoing trickle-selling on download to establish the answer to a question like this, but I find myself wondering what the highest current sales tally might be for a single/track that has yet to occupy a Top 100 (or for that matter 200) berth in any one weekly chart?
Tenacious D's 'Tribute' might've been a good contender (never got them myself but that's hardly relevant) having somehow shifted 158,000 copies since 2004 and never having risen above No 100 on the weeklies. Perhaps records would show it's the best-selling track so far to have only peaked at No 84?

There are way too much old tracks on the Singles Chart.
I've got the feeling like I'm looking at the Catalog Singles Chart checking it...

New singles spent decades on it (Price Tag, Moves Like Jagger, Party Rock Anthem) and the rest build far too many old tracks which have been on the chart for years or some decade-old tracks which haven't spent long on the Singles Chart at their time but still got well-known somehow...

Digital age, casting shows and Glee really suck!

I accept that some followers of the current charts may find the ever-present glut of older releases frustrating, especially perhaps those who weened themselves onto chart interest during the 1995 to 2005 era, when turnover was very rapid, only 'current' physical releases would feature, and it had become rare for even the most enduring single to remain charted for more than 3 months in the Top 75, and re-entry after initial departure was also seldom seen.

Personally I rather prefer the slower movement up and down the chart of many tracks, and that the chart has inevitably become as democratic and broad in its remit to rank the most popular tracks by sale. Like it or not, the main market for singles now is the digital track, whether or not it was promoted as a single, has a physical counterpart, was made available recently, or was recorded maybe decades ago. If these are the tracks people are buying, the chart must reflect that come what may. The singles arena is now a catalogue market, just like the albums always has been, and so the enduring popularity of some older tracks, even if it is largely down to their use on a talent show, ad or renewed interest in an artist's repertoire because of a new release (or sometimes untimely death) must now be reflected in the tracks chart. Had singles titles been made available at retail in the physical era beyond a few months like albums were/are, their chart would have seen similarly slower descents, and older discs that were consistently popular re-appear more readily. The digital age blew all of that away and now it's anything goes, as those with facilities can now obtain pretty much any song they wish, without it having to be on current single release. It's doing the albums market no favours at all, but that's another rant that I have already indulged in elsewhere!

The 'new' chart is inevitably responsive to very temporary fluctuations in the market - it's not always the case that older hits stick around for months or years on end with frequent re-appearances; sometimes an old song rockets back onto the listings due to a one-off spike of consumer interest and then retreats as hastily as it came. This is why trying to determine overall sales success by highest weekly chart position, or even number of weeks on chart, is becoming less and less of a meaningful method, in the same way as it never has been for albums.

I'd say that at least the current shape of the market means that those who do prefer instant quick-fixes and turnover are still catered for as much as us fans of slow climbers and enduring hits - there are almomst as many debuts at No 1 and around the Top 10 as there were 10 years ago so it's not all 'dull'.

I don't think the main singles/tracks chart should be altered. But perhaps there is an argument for presenting, as an adjunct to it, two separate rankings - 'Current' and 'Catalogue'. The first could be limited to ranking sales of releases within the last 12 months only, while the second deals with all those made available earlier than that. It would help chart fans and the industry determine the relative effects of catalogue material on the performance of current titles. Those concerned to see how the chart would look if the old stuff was stripped out would be fascinated, and it would shed light on to what extent new songs are being denied higher chart placings (or placings at all) by the presence of catalogue.

Some might argue that there should be a supporting chart compiled in which only releases marketed as a 'single' proper (be it digital and/or physical) qualify for entry. That would certainly see many steady climbs up the chart ladder eradicated as the song's sales as an unbundled album track wouldn't be counted for this chart until it receives its full official UK release. With the 'on-air/on-sale' policy seemingly being abandoned by labels who can't get out of the front-loaded mentality, we'd see many more high 'debuts' in a chart like this. But of course it would only disguise the fact that sales before single release as an album cut would have been a drain on those accrued in the first week on sale as a proper single.
