Based on a best-selling book, says the poster. So not random at all. Power of the black audiences, from the looks of it. See Tyler Perry. It's got a low 4.5 rating on IMDb so the general public don't rate it at all.
It has a lot of major Black actors in it so it really was expected and they marketed it in all the right places gonna go see it today.!

Disney's superheroes drive Battleship from first to sixth place at UK box office, while Salmon Fishing in the Yemen holds steady

Iron Man has always been potent at the UK box office, but would adding relative commercial weaklings Thor, Captain America and the Hulk to the formula increase or detract from the character's appeal? That question has now been answered in resounding fashion, as Avengers Assemble explodes at the UK box office with £15.78m, including Thursday previews of £2.55m. That's more than double the openings of Iron Man (£5.47m including previews of £667,000) and Iron Man 2 (£7.66m including previews of £877,000) from early May 2008 and late April 2010 respectively. The Avengers takings are also more than the entire runs of last year's franchise extensions Thor (£14.05m) and Captain America: The First Avenger (£9.48m) as well as both of the last decade's Hulk movies, which took £8.43m (Ang Lee's The Hulk, starring Eric Bana) and £8.28m (Louis Leterrier's The Incredible Hulk, starring Edward Norton).

Disney is trumpeting the result as the biggest superhero-movie opening of all time. The Dark Knight debuted with £11.19m including £2.50m in previews. Spider-Man 3 kicked off with £11.83m (all from the Friday-Sunday period, no previews) in May 2007. Disney is also celebrating it as the second-biggest four-day weekend ever (behind Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, with £16.49m). However, this achievement loses some of its lustre when you consider certain three-day opening results, notably Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (£18.32m) and Part 2 (£23.75m). Coming off the disappointment of the over-budgeted John Carter, which has failed to crack £5m in total in the UK, Disney will have regained some much-needed spring in its step. Positioning Avengers Assemble as the first major tentpole of summer (unless you count Battleship, which opened 11 April) has proved a smart move, with no major competition for fans of event-movie spectacle. The downside is that by opening outside of a school holiday, audiences are not so available on weekdays to see it, but with such a whopping opening weekend, the Avengers won't need much in the way of midweek grosses to achieve a huge total. Meanwhile, Battleship has fallen from first to sixth place, with a drop in takings of 61% from the previous weekend.

With the smallest decline of any film in the top 10 (just 7%), Lasse Hallstrom's Salmon Fishing in the Yemen is proving a hit with its target market. It's not quite in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel league (John Madden's film opened significantly bigger and went up 5% in its second frame) but distributor Lionsgate will be more than happy. Rainy skies can't have hurt, although other films suffered much bigger drops. Principal competition came from middlebrow awards bait Albert Nobbs, featuring Oscar-nominated turns from Glenn Close and Janet McTeer; the period drama debuted with a so-so £107,000 from 75 locations.

The losers:

While several films experienced gentle declines, space-prison actioner Lockout and kidnap thriller Gone both fell 72% from the previous weekend. Both lost screens and showtimes, and now look set to make relatively speedy exits from cinemas. That fate likewise surely awaits Outside Bet, a 1980s-set Britcom that didn't win much critical favour (0% Fresh at Rotten Tomatoes, with eight out of eight reviews falling into the negative camp) and opened with a dismal £8,440 from 34 cinemas. The cast includes Bob Hoskins, Phil Davis and Adam Deacon. Mind you, its screen average of £248 isn't so far behind the £309 earned by Disney documentary African Cats at each of its 134 locations.

The art-house market:

Unless you count Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, top upscale contender was Kevin Macdonald documentary Marley, expanding its screen count a bit to help rein in its decline to a gentle 15%. The 10-day gross stands at a healthy £493,000. Best foreign language performer remains Headhunters, now with £1.19m under its belt. Whit Stillman's Damsels in Distress did OK in limited play, with £45,000 from 19 screens, including modest previews, and 17th place in the weekend chart. A screening of Russian satirical ballet Bolshoi Live: The Bright Stream competed for audiences on Sunday.

The future:

Thanks to that stonking Avengers result, takings overall are a very handy 64% up on the equivalent weekend from 2011, when Thor debuted at the top with £5.45m. The current frame is the third best of the past year, behind the mid-July weekend when Deathly Hallows Part 2 opened, and the late-August one where The Inbetweeners Movie joined a crowded market of still-chugging summer blockbusters. The immediate future looks short on Avengers-size hits, but this weekend, franchise revival American Pie: Reunion presents the first major Hollywood comedy since March's 21 Jump Street, and Zac Efron fans should appreciate his turn in the latest Nicholas Sparks adaptation, The Lucky One. The action and horror boxes are ticked by Safe and Silent House, while Disney offers a 3D reissue of animated classic Beauty and the Beast.

The Pirates! Band Of Misfits failed to sink Think Like A Man at the US Box Office this weekend as the comedy stayed in the top spot for the second week running.

Band Of Misfits debuted in second having pillaged $11.4 million in takings, while comedy Think Like A Man reined supreme with a weekend gross of $18 million.

However, The scallywags did make Zac Efron‘s romantic drama The Lucky One walk the plank to third, while The Hunger Games moved out of the way and into fourth.

Emily Blunt and Jason Segel‘s comedy The Five–Year Engagement and Jason Statham‘s Safe debuted at fifth and sixth respectively, while The Raven took seventh on its first outing.

Disney‘s Chimpanzee moved into eighth, while those other monkeys The Three Stooges took ninth and The Cabin In The Woods took a wrong turn and headed for tenth.

Propably because of the more expensive 3D-prices because American Pie actually had more viewers (668k : 545k)...

Though this would represent an average ticket price of 15,22€ for The Avengers... This sounds way too high to me!

'Avengers' Smashes Records
by Ray Subers
The Avengers

May 7, 2012

It's been clear for a while that The Avengers would be a box office success, though few people could have foreseen this opening. The superhero team-up got off to an unprecedented $207.4 million start this weekend, which obliterates the previous all-time weekend record set by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 last Summer ($169.2 million).

While it fell short of setting a new opening day record (that still belongs to Potter), The Avengers was responsible for new high marks in most other major categories. It was the fastest movie ever to reach $100 million, $150 million, and $200 million, and it set new records for Saturday ($69.6 million) and Sunday ($57.1 million) grosses. It also had the highest per-theater average ever for a nationwide release with $47,698.

Through its first three days, The Avengers has already grossed more than Thor ($181 million), Captain America: The First Avenger ($176.6 million) and The Incredible Hulk ($134.8 million). It's still behind Iron Man and Iron Man 2 ($318.4 million and $312.4 million, respectively), though it should pass those movies next weekend.

The incredible opening weekend gross for The Avengers is mostly the result of a lengthy, extremely effective marketing effort which began all the way back in 2008 when Nick Fury made his first appearance after the credits in the original Iron Man. By the time Thor and Captain America opened last year, it became clear that these movies existed in equal parts to make money and to serve as advertisements for The Avengers.

Still, there was the problem of reaching people who hadn't turned out for Thor, Captain America and The Incredible Hulk. That was solved by Disney's massive campaign that made the movie seem accessible even for people who have never picked up a comic book in their life. The marketing conveyed that there was a major threat, and the only way to combat it was by bringing together the world's greatest superheroes. The "head count" ad was a centerpiece of this campaign: it introduced each of the Avengers with a quip from the most-popular Avenger, Tony Stark/Iron Man, and provided a few brief glimpses of the character in action. By the end of that commercial, even the most oblivious viewers probably had a good sense for who everyone was.

The movie went on to receive strong reviews (94 percent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), which made anticipation reach even higher levels. It also helped that April's releases were anemic, so The Avengers was able to play on more screens than it would have if another major movie was in the market (like when Thor had to face Fast Five last year).

The big question now is how high The Avengers can go—it will obviously hit $400 million, and with exceptional word-of-mouth (rare "A+" CinemaScore) the movie could even be in line for a $500 million total.

The audience was split evenly between those above and below 25 years-of-age, and it was 60 percent male. 3D screenings accounted for 52 percent of the opening weekend gross, which is an improvement from Captain America's 40 percent but below Thor's 60 percent. That 3D share breaks down to 40 percent traditional 3D, 8 percent IMAX, and 4 percent premium large format. The estimated $15.3 million the movie earned at 275 IMAX theaters set a new record for the format.

The Avengers accounted for 83.1 percent of the $249.7 million the Top 12 earned this weekend. That's the second-highest weekend market share ever, and the weekend itself ranks fifth all-time in revenue (first for a Summer kick-off).

The titles that made up that other 16.9 percent expectedly took a big hit this weekend. Think Like a Man fell 54 percent to $8.1 million, which brings its total to $73.1 million. It is easily the highest-grossing April 2012 release, and should wind up with at least $85 million.

The Hunger Games stayed in the Top 3 for the seventh-straight weekend, though it dropped 48 percent to $5.6 million. So far, the movie has made $380.6 million, which ranks 14th on the all-time domestic chart. In the next day or two, it will pass Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2's $381 million.

The Lucky One dipped 50 percent to $5.4 million, and has thus far earned $47.8 million. The Pirates! Band of Misfits added $5.5 million, which is off 51 percent from its opening. That's a terrible drop for an animated movie, and it probably has to do with losing family audiences and some 3D screens to The Avengers. The Pirates! has only made $18.7 million through its first 10 days.

The Five-Year Engagement also took a tumble—the Jason Segel-Emily Blunt romantic comedy fell 53 percent to $5.03 million, and has to-date earned a paltry $19.1 million. Even worse, though, were Safe and The Raven. Those movies dropped 66 percent and 64 percent to $2.68 million and $2.64 million, respectively. Safe has now grossed $13.1 million, while The Raven's total sits at $12.2 million.

While The Avengers was the only new nationwide release this weekend, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel provided great counterprogramming and played well in limited release. The movie ranked 16th for the weekend with $737,051 from just 27 locations, which translates to a strong $27,298 per-theater average. This kind of pleasant, well-reviewed adult comedy is right in distributor Fox Searchlight's wheelhouse, and it should be able to successfully expand over the next few weeks.

Due to a hefty production budget and a massive marketing campaign, Disney ended up losing $200 million on "John Carter." In an attempt to reduce some of those loses, the studio paired the film with "The Avengers" as a double feature offered at more than 150 drive-ins across the country.

Usually, drive-ins don't boost a film's gross by all that much, but since "The Avengers" scored the biggest weekend of all time, "John Carter" actually jumped to 12th place at the domestic box office, from 38th place the week prior. "Carter" took in $1.5 million, which is 1,223% more over the previous weekend.

The average cost of a drive-in ticket is $8. Studios don't disclose how they divide the ticket sales between the two films. But as of right now, "Carter" has grossed $70.8 million domestically and $208.2 million overseas.

i just watched it as well and it was completly ridiculous  (imo ofc) however Scarlett Johansson was really good but i can t stand Captain America,Hulk, Iron Man & Co. The Hunger Games is obviously superior to it.

This film is so predictable with the superhero stereotype, it s just a burger with different sauces but in the end you eat the same old sh*t

Weekend Report: 'Avengers' Shatters More Records, 'Shadows' Mostly Sucks
by Ray Subers
The Avengers

May 13, 2012

With Dark Shadows providing little in the way of competition, The Avengers had no trouble at all extending its stranglehold on the box office this weekend. Marvel's superhero team-up fell 50 percent to an estimated $103.2 million, which is by-far the best second weekend ever ahead of Avatar's $75.6 million. It also topped The Dark Knight for best second weekend hold for a movie that opened to more than $120 million. Other new records include fastest movie to $300 million and $350 million, and highest eight-day, nine-day, and ten-day grosses.

Through Sunday, The Avengers is estimated to have earned $373.2 million, which ranks 18th on the all-time domestic chart. It's now inevitable that the movie will finish above $500 million, and it should also claim third place on the all-time chart ahead of The Dark Knight ($533.3 million).

As expected, Dark Shadows couldn't hold a candle to The Avengers, though its estimated $28.8 million opening is still a bit of a disappointment. Among recent Johnny Depp and Tim Burton collaborations, that's a tiny fraction of Alice in Wonderland's $116.1 million and around half of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory's $56.2 million. Those were both colorful, fun, recognizable properties, and Dark Shadows is much closer to Sweeney Todd and Sleepy Hollow. It significantly out-grossed Sweeney Todd ($9.3 million at 1,249 locations) but was a bit off from Sleepy Hollow ($30.1 million).

Dark Shadows's underwhelming debut can be attributed to a handful of factors, not least of which was the tough release date. The second weekend of May is a notoriously difficult time to open a movie, as Warner Bros. experienced with Poseidon in 2006 ($22.2 million) and Speed Racer in 2008 ($18.6 million). The challenge was magnified this year thanks to The Avengers, which is outperforming even the most bullish pre-release forecasts.

It doesn't help that vampires who don't sparkle (read: aren't in the Twilight franchise) don't tend to be overly successful at the box office, and the Dark Shadows soap opera upon which the movie is based isn't nearly as popular as other TV source material. Perhaps more importantly, though, this mediocre opening seems to suggest that Johnny Depp may be losing some of his mojo thanks to disappointing recent movies like Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and The Tourist. Because of this, a movie can't be sold on Depp alone, and the fish-out-of-water comedy and outlandish sex scenes portrayed in the movie's marketing weren't enough to seal the deal for most people.

IMAX presentations only contributed $1.15 million, which is likely a result of splitting showtimes with The Avengers. According to distributor Warner Bros. Pictures, the audience was 57 percent female and 73 percent over the age of 25. They awarded the movie a poor "B-" CinemaScore, and with three new nationwide releases coming up next weekend there's little chance that Dark Shadows holds up well in the long-run.

In its fourth weekend, Think Like a Man eased 22 percent to an estimated $6.3 million. So far, the ensemble romantic comedy has earned a very strong $81.9 million.

The Hunger Games took fourth place with an estimated $4.4 million, which is off just 21 percent from last weekend. The blockbuster has so far grossed $386.9 million, and will yield 2012's top spot in the next few days to The Avengers.

The Lucky One rounded out the Top Five with an estimated $4.06 million (a light 24 percent decline). The movie has now made $53.7 million.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel expanded to 178 locations and added an estimated $2.65 million this weekend. That was good for eighth place on the weekend chart, and the Fox Searchlight geriatric comedy has now earned $3.7 million.

Girl in Progress, the latest release from Lionsgate/Pantelion, opened in tenth place with an estimated $1.35 million from 322 locations. The movie received a "B+" CinemaScore, and the audience was 70 percent female and 57 percent over the age of 25.

The Artist received one final push from The Weinstein Company this weekend, though it didn't really take advantage. The Oscar winner expanded to 751 locations but made just $161,000, which translates to an awful $214 per-theater average. The Artist has now earned $44.4 million, and is unlikely to make much more before the end of its run.

Around-the-World Roundup: 'Avengers' Reaches $1 Billion Worldwide
by Ray Subers
The Avengers

May 13, 2012

Based on Sunday estimates, The Avengers has joined the fabled $1 billion worldwide box office club. The movie reached this level on its 19th day in theaters, which ties the record-breaking pace of Avatar and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (though The Avengers was only playing in the U.S. for ten of those days). It currently ranks 11th on the all-time worldwide chart with $1.002 billion, and by the end of next weekend it will move up to fourth place behind Avatar, Titanic and Deathly Hallows Part 2.

"We're obviously thrilled with the global success of The Avengers," said Robert Iger, Disney's Chairman and CEO, in a press release. "It's a fantastic movie and an extraordinary franchise that will continue with more great stories and compelling characters for years to come."

The Avengers is Disney's fifth billion-dollar movie following Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($1.066 billion), Toy Story 3 ($1.063 billion), Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ($1.044 billion) and Alice in Wonderland ($1.024 billion). No other studio has more than two billion-dollar movies.

Across its 54 markets, The Avengers added an estimated $95.4 million this weekend to bring its foreign total to $628.9 million. That's the highest overseas gross ever for a comic book adaptation, and it ranks 16th among all titles. The movie's top market so far is the United Kingdom with $65.7 million, and China ($52.3 million), Mexico ($49.6 million), Brazil ($44.6 million) and South Korea ($41.3 million) make up the Top Five. It's only major market remaining is Japan, where it opens in August, and there's a good chance The Avengers ultimately winds up close to $800 million in overseas revenue.

Dark Shadows had its foreign launch this weekend, though similarly to its domestic debut it played second fiddle to The Avengers. The Tim Burton-Johnny Depp horror comedy grossed $36.7 million from 42 markets, and was 93 percent ahead of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory across the same regions according to distributor Warner Bros. Pictures. The movie opened to $5.3 million in Russia, $4.6 million in France (first place), $4 million in the U.K., $3.7 million in Australia, $2.5 million in South Korea, $2.4 million in Spain, $2.3 million in Italy, and a disappointing $2 million in Germany. Dark Shadows still has debuts in Japan, Brazil, and Mexico to look forward to.

American Reunion added $15.6 million in 49 territories for a total of $144.5 million. That passed American Pie 2's $143 million to set a new franchise record. Add in its domestic tally, and American Reunion has now made over $200 million worldwide, and it's likely this movie will ultimately be deemed a success.

Battleship opened in Latin America this weekend but only saw its revenues jump to an estimated $11.2 million. It had fine debuts in Mexico ($3.1 million) and Brazil ($1.6 million), though it trailed the third weekend of The Avengers in both of those territories. It's entirely possible that a similar fate awaits Battleship when it opens in the U.S. this upcoming weekend.

Other Notables - Weekend Gross - Gross-to-Date
21 Jump Street - $3.2 - $49.1
Titanic 3D - $3.1 - $282.6
The Lucky One - $2.5 - $22.8
The Pirates! - $2.2 - $74.5
Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - $1.9 - $75.7
Five-Year Engagement - $1.7 - $4.7
