I agree.

Most of the time I have never had much trouble finding a topic I have been looking for.

Perhaps the Rock & Alternative description could be extended to cover Specialist, then there is no confusion as to what forum these topics should go into.

Sounds like the best idea.

Maybe rename it Rock/Alternative/Specialist. Therefore, even if there's a bit of a lap-over, one of those genres would potentially cover the song.

Well there needs to be a place for us folk who like something a bit different (are a bit more extensive in our tastes). ;) I don't care if there aren't many of us, as long as there is a place for all of us freaks to gather. 8-)

I guess there's two things here

1) The sort of "specialist" music we're talking here really does NOT fit in the rock/alternative forum. The sort of music we're thinking of is:

Classical
Jazz
Blues
World
Easy Listening
Comedy/Kids

Therefore, it's things that are nothing like rock at all.

2) It's currently 21/11 in favour of people saying "Yes" to whether we should have a Specialist forum - I presume for music like the above.

However, can I ask those 21 people who think we should have the new forum how much they would be likely to post in such a forum? So far we have essentially next to 0 posts ever about classical, jazz, blues, world, easy listening or comedy song.

What about Latin music? Would that be included in this new forum?

Why not just try it? It won't be hard to implement and we can call it beta and if it does not work we can move the posts into the test forum.

+1 to both comments.

I guess the Specialist forum could also cover country music too, no? (As well as Latin, as mentioned by Goldmoney.)

I too wonder how much traffic and posts this Specialist forum would get myself. Methinks it'll be another dead forum sadly.

I had a dream last night I logged on to UKMIX and there was a forum for every single specific genre, so like 25 genre forums

Tony had posted a thread in them all.

I think that there should definitely be another forum! There's lots of different music out there, which wouldn't always be appropriately accommodated in one of the current respective genre-specified forums.

And it would be nice if Country music finally had a place to go.

This is probably a really unpopular opinion, but why can't we just merge all of the genre-specific sub-forums into one? I know that less popular artists would get pushed off the first page constantly, but surely there's a setting that enables us to view more than x number of topics per page? I just feel like music is so difficult to define into such specific categories, especially these days.

And a user nightmare. We have that already in the general artist section and in the artist chart analysis section where it works quite good, but I assume it would not work as concerning the eras and songs threads.

No to expanding Rock/ Alternative. It's bad enough that lots of borderline pop stuff and some frankly un-rocking material is posted in there. That forum should not be used as a dumping ground for posts nobody knows where to post (MIA, Santigold...).

The following current/ recent threads could all go in Specialist:

Rock/ Alternative:

Bonnie Raitt - Slipstream
Paul Buchanan - Mid Air
Santana - Shape Shifter
The Proclaimers - Like Comedy
The Civil Wars - Barton Hollow (album)
The Civil Wars - Barton Hollow (single)
The Proclaimers - Spinning Around In The Air
First Aid Kit - Emmylou
First Aid Kit - The Lion's Roar
Paul McCartney - My Valentine/ Kisses On The Bottom (jazz album)
Tom Jones - Hit Or Miss/ Spirit In The Room (blues/ folk/ gospel album)
Various - The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 and Beyond (folk album mainly)
Lisa Marie Presley - Storm and Grace (blues album)
Mumford and Sons - The Cave
Laura Gibson - La Grande

Urban/ R n B:

Mary Mary - Go Get It (gospel)
It's possibly contentious to take Gospel out of Urban but many places do...

Ezperanza Spalding - Black Gold

Pop:

Norah Jones - Little Broken Hearts
Alfie Boe and Kimberley Walsh - One Vision
Engelbert Humperdinck - Love Will Set You Free
Lisa Marie Presley - You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet
Carrie Underwood - Blown Away
Rumer - Boys Don't Cry
Tiziano Ferro - L'amore è una cosa semplice
Norah Jones - Happy Pills
Amadou and Mariam - Folila
Buranovskie Babushki - Party For Everybody
Taylor Swift with The Civil Wars - Safe and Sound
(maybe not Eyes Open)
Michel Telo - Ai Se Eu Te Pego
Carrie Underwood - Good Girl
Mary Byrne - ...With Love
Katie Melua - Secret Symphony

Not sure about LeAnn Rimes - she hasn't been country for years!

As few as that! :o

I've just been on my Easy Audio Editor program and it lists 147 genres
Mind you I don't think we would need one for speech?

I've just thought of another genre to add to the 147! "Silent"
After that getting the silent record to number one debate we had!

Well not that many! Even the Grammies have dropped some that were so specialist they were practically extinct: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polka

Not to mention my Rascal Flatts thread. It looks so odd seeing the song categorized under "Pure Pop". :-?

IMO - I changed my mind! Yes open it please!!!
I'd post Latin music, JPop, KPop and some other rarities of World Music like Sirusho and I guess it'd be more popular since all of us gathering there would discover something that is either NOT mainstream OR plain different than what we're used to!
I go with the yes!

Specialist Forum:

- World Music (Kpop, JPop, Europpean releases in other languages)
- Latin Pop
- African Music
- Jazz
- Folk
- Trip Hop
- Comedy / Kids
- Classical
- Country

:) !!
Let's just try it :P ! haha
I think Country needs its own place as well! It's so cringeworthy to see it in POP next to the latest release by LAdy GaGa and Madonna

^Trip hop and chillout is a tricky one - i'd put them all in Dance but mods insist on shunting them in Alternative as though all dance music has to be hands-in-the-air party tunes.
Not all rock music is rock and roll/ actual rock, is it?

According to most taste definitions outside of this forum (record stores, official OCC Dance Charts), Massive Attack, Portishead, Moby, Zero 7, MIA, Santigold etc are all of the dance spectrum. They're not Specialist, IMO. HMV situates them near the Specialist Genres, though (in ground level stores) - Blues, Folk, Jazz, Reggae, Country, Easy Listening, Classical, Soundtracks, World, Comedy.
