I need to do the same. I still know very little about Paul except for Bill's suggestions.

Hearts And Bones is life. "Cars Are Cars" doesn't rank with his finest moments but the whole album is a masterpiece still.

By the way have the heard the album "Two Teenagers"? It is a very early album from them.

I've heard Hey Schoolgirl, never really paid too much attention to the pre-Simon And Garfunkel stuff since it seems like neither of them hold it in too high esteem except for the curiosity value.

PSR&T is a brilliant personal and political album. The essay on the back of the album by some random critic is kind of pretentious talking about how S&G along with The Beatles and Dylan are making people take rock seriously, etc.. But there's not a bad song on it. I was listening to the album last night when I posted that.

Some strange irony... listening to Bookends right now and on Old Friends they sing about how strange it must feel to be 70 years old... today Paul and Art are both 70, and yet in 2012 70 doesn't quite feel as ancient as it did in 1968.

Age is nothing to me, Paul is amazing and Art's voice is sublime. 8-)

An unpopular opinion only people on this thread would care about either way :lol:

Bookends and Parsley, Sage, Rosemary And Thyme >>>>> Bridge Over Troubled Water

The title song of course is epic, and so is The Boxer and Only Living Boy In New York, but the album as a whole isn't as consistent... you can hear the friction between the two of them on it.

Well deserved!

During his distinguished career Paul Simon has been the recipient of many honors and awards including 12 Grammy Awards, three of which (Bridge Over Troubled Water, Still Crazy After All These Years, and Graceland) were albums of the year. In 2003 he was given a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for his work as half of the duo Simon and Garfunkel. He is a member of The Songwriters Hall of Fame, a recipient of their Johnny Mercer Award and is in the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Simon and Garfunkel and as a solo artist. His song “Mrs. Robinson” from the motion picture The Graduate was named in the top ten of The American Film Institute’s 100 Years 100 Songs. He was a recipient of The Kennedy Center Honors in 2002 and was named as one of Time Magazine’s “100 People Who Shape Our World” in 2006. In 2007, Mr. Simon was awarded the first annual Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. In 2011 Mr. Simon was elected to The American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Of Mr. Simon’s many concert appearances he is most fond of the two concerts in Central Park in New York (with his partner and childhood friend Art Garfunkel in 1981 and as a solo artist in 1991) and the series of shows he did at the invitation of Nelson Mandela in South Africa: the first American artist to perform in post-apartheid South Africa.

Paul Simon’s philanthropic work includes the co-founding of The Children’s Health Fund with Dr. Irwin Redlener. The CHF donates and staffs mobile medical vans that bring health care to poor and indigent children in urban and rural locations around the United States. Since its inception in 1986 it has provided over 2 million doctor/patient visits. Mr. Simon has also raised millions of dollars for worthy causes as varied as AMFAR, The Nature Conservancy, The Fund for Imprisoned Children in South Africa, and Autism Speaks.

A&E US is airing the Under African Skies documentary several times this weekend for those who have it. I have the DVR set. Even though Graceland isn't my fave Paul Simon album, I know it'll be good. I enjoyed the Bridge Over Troubled Water documentary that VH1 Classic aired last year.

I watched the "Under African Skies" documentary last night. Paul actually considers the failure of Hearts And Bones a blessing in disguise (though he does defend the album) because he thinks had the album been a bigger seller that Warner would've breathed down his neck harder and he probably wouldn't have been able to make Graceland the way he wanted.

Hard to believe how controversial the album was in the black community because many felt Paul was a rich white man exploiting poor South Africans for monetary gain, when you could see from the footage of him reuniting with the musicians after 25 years since they last worked together that there was mutual respect across the board.

The DVD will be included with the remastered Graceland. It is nice to see him so unguarded like he is. When you consider all the people who show up to talk on it (McCartney, Peter Gabriel, Quincy Jones, Phillip Glass, etc...), it truly shows just how beloved Paul is by his peers.

crazycrazy just told me why Graceland is charting (anniversary edition). Unbelieveable success, top ten in the UK for 2 weeks now. I'm very happy.

I love this one of course but it's not among my faves from him.
