I love this song. It's simple and sweet. And I find myself singing this often. "When will we get, the time to be..."


FOUR....."SOME UNHOLY WAR (DOWN TEMPO VERSION)" [BACK TO BLACK] (youtube)

aargh! The only way I can describe this song is by comparing every verse to a sharp spear, whose tip has been dipped in a poison so potent that when the javelin makes contact with your body, it sends the most powerful shivers down your spine. This song (and the following song) have such a morbid feel to it, but that's what make these songs sooo good!

Knowing that your boyfriend/girlfriend/partner is willing to give up their life to fight your battle is, in my opinion, what love is all about. And this song, even if Amy claimed that she didn't know what it was about, describes that elusive feeling everyone longs to hear.

The track that's on my copy of Back To Black is the regular, not-as-epic one. It's still a good track, but the down tempo version makes the song much more chilling. The cold "ooooh" and "aaaah"'s, the simple use of the drums and guitars and Winehouse's delivery of certain words accentuate the determination the narrator feels for her man, and the lengths she'll go to stay by his side.

As soon as the song opens, you know you're in for something heavy. Whenever the song begins, the rhythm of the beat makes me think of someone that is deteriorating rapidly, similar to someone who is on a hospital bed, and attached to an electrocardiogram device. It just makes me feel that something major is going to happen soon.

Amy made this song for Mr. Blake Fielder-Civil when she thought that she'd "never see him again". And it's clear from her song that she definitely thought hat Fielder-Civil's loss wold mean something horrible for her. There's not much else that needs to be said. Winehouse's metaphors are something else - comparing herself to a penny stuck in a pipe is golden! And the misleads are pretty cool ("you go back to what you...know", "I go back to, I go back to...us").

Also, is the title Back To Black a play on the word Blake? Anyways, see you in five more months, folks!
