Is it underrated? It's one of her most famous and still played to this day in the UK.
It was sarcasm Crazy 8-)
Oh. :-? :D I don't even know how well it did in the UK chart wise, it just seems to be one of her songs that people just "know" off the top of their head.
peaked at #7 in the UK. (and #1 performed by X-factor Cast)
The power of Mariah is enough to peak at #7 while a bunch of irrelevants make it to #1 *yawns*

#10 The Beautiful Ones (ft. Dru Hill)
Image
This has to be her best vocal performance in the studio, it certainly is her best collaboration and best cover. Her vocals and the whole production give the song which is a Prince original, new life and more depth. Butterfly is not only her most personal album, it is an album that gave her peace - as an artist and an individual. This song captures all of that. I have a dream, that one day she'll perform this live. The Beautiful Ones is one of my alltime favourite and most played songs - an instant favourite.

#9 Fly Like a Bird
Image

I'm not a religous person but this song has everything one should look for in a gospel song. It's my highest ranked song from the Mimi era. From start to finsih, the song builds a whole new world of vocal craft. It's a creation of its own. The retro 70's gospel production deserved special recognition after her 2006 Grammy Awards performance. It is certainly one of the best gospel tracks, unfortunately no one in this world but her will be able to do the song justice. It's a declaration of love to the almighty lord by Mariah Carey, a relationship which I hope can grow stronger and stronger and inspires her for another legendary attempt of heavenly praise on her new record.

Fly Like A Bird is actually my favourite Mariah song of all time. The song has a superb melody, great retro-production, insane vocals and a heartfelt and honest message. It's the song that sets her apart from Whitney and Celine, who are my second and third favourite artists.

but Whitney did such a wonderful gospel album, The Preacher's Wife. I've actually never heard Celine singing a gospel track, except for the Divas Live 1998 encore.

PW is my favourite Nippy album, but FLAB's vocals just slay. The final chorus is a religious experience for me.

The Beautiful Ones! :o

Truly stunning.

I cannot listen to it without getting completely lost within the song.

"The Beautiful Ones" is a pretty nice track, one of my faves from Butterfly.

"Fly Like A Bird", however, is absolutely beautiful. It's definitely a very powerful song and even for those who aren't religious, it just takes you on a heavenly trip, especially the last chorus.

#8 My All
Image

My All was a #1 single in the United States and many people think, it should have not been one. But I think it's one of her greatest songs. The Morales Remix (which also charted on this countdown) showed how unique the melody of the song really is. It does show similarities to another - very early #1 single - I Don't wanna Cry. It's one of the best latin songs and latin ballads out there and I'd hope for more people to appreciate it more. It's a staple of her career and I always expect it to be sung on tour. Unfortunately, the song only peaked at #30 in Germany. In the final of the first season of Deutschland sucht den Superstar, runner-up Juliette sang the song. I'm still convinced, she only lost because she sang a Mariah Carey song.. and one that is probably one of the hardest.

"My All" is arguably Carey's greatest lyrical achievement. That lyric, I am thinking of you in my sleepless solitude tonight, if it's wrong to love you then my heart just won't let me be right just touches my soul every single time. It's the very best of Butterfly, in my opinion.

Woo! Some gems.

"The Beautiful Ones (Feat. Dru Hill)" is an outstanding track. I love the climax. Nice to see it recognized.

The climax is when Mariah shines again, on the stellar track, "Fly Like A Bird". I love it when the chorus begins to intensify, and Mariah finishes the song with the whistles. <3 Great choice, Stevyy.

I used to love "My All" but she has much better songs. I don't hate it like certain people though.

My All - I started to like this song (again) a few weeks ago. :D :D However I agree with ANH, that she has much better songs.

My All <3

One of the definitive Mariah ballads!

It's special for me because it's the song that made me a fan. I used to sit under my covers playing it over and over again.

#7 If It's Over
Image

If It's over is one of her most soulful songs. The song appears on my second favourite album Emotions. The album might be full of ballads and it's a relatively short album with only 9 songs, yet every single song tells a story and is so well written and produced that they have the potential to make a future countdown. Her 1992 Saturday Night Life performances are beyond amazing. She never sounded better. If It's Over is better than most of her #1 singles and deserves a Grammy more than any song which is yet to appear.
#6 Everything Fades Away
Image

Mariah is a brilliant songwriter, no one can deny that. This song is only credited as a bonus track on the international edition of Music Box. And yet it has become the song, I play the most from that album. It's so dark, emotional and depressive that every single note and every single word tingles my soul. I cannot imagine what she must have had in her mind when she wrote it, but it certainly wasn't a happy memory. The song reflects her difficult upbringing and shows that she really is a human being as well, beneath the diva image and fairytale lifestyle.

#5 Fantasy Sweet Dub Remix (Daydream Interlude)
Image

This remix is Mariah's best remix to date and the highest ranked one in this countdown. The melody is outstanding. The original song can only be traced my the lyrics in every other aspect, it is a whole different song. David Morales has never reached this quality again. But better to have one absolute masterpiece than none. I think it's a shame that it never got the recognition it deserved. Was it a Dance-Club mega hit? I doubt that. I never hear this remix in the clubs or on the radio. This remix made Mariah Carey the remix queen. I hope that many more people get the opportunity to discover it because you'll never get who Mariah Carey really is as an artist when you don't look beyond the albums tracks.
#4 Close My Eyes
Image

For a very long time, this song sat at #1 on my alltime favourite songs list but it did get pushed down a bit. Nevertheless, it is a masterpiece beyond compare. Mariah might stick to the love theme on the majority of her songs but she also lets us know about her evolution as a person and practically revealed her whole personal story through her songs. It really is a factor why most of her lambs feel so close to her, she gives pieces of her soul away with songs like Close My eyes.

Close My Eyes is so outstanding. It contains some of Mariah's best lyrics and has this haunting melody. Mariah really takes you on a journey with some of her songs, especially the whole Butterfly record.

"If It's Over" has some phenomenal vocals from Mariah. I really like the song. I have a film idea, and it incorporates this song, so I like it even more! :]

I've never really heard "Everything Fades Away". I'll listen to it sometime later.

I like the "Fantasy (Daydream Interlude)" but it doesn't compare to the original. At all.

"Close My Eyes" is beautifully written but I wouldn't have put it this high.

Is this going to be like the Angels Advocate album where we got everything but, like, four tracks, four tracks that the fans have been waiting for since, like, forever!

"If It's Over" is a masterclass vocal performance. I don't think Mariah's ever sounded stronger than she sounds on that track.

"Fantasy" is nice and I've grown to enjoy it but it's still very overrated amongst the lambs.
