Philadelphia, PA (CNN) -- Jay-Z is now adding his voice to the debate over the economy and same sex marriage.

The rapper and mogul sat down with CNN's Poppy Harlow to talk about a range of topics.

Listen to what he said when asked if the US economy is in recovery.

"This is a test of our character. You know, for a long time, you know, we had it pretty good in America...we were floating on this high. Well, we were hiding some of the troubles that we were going through. So, I just see this as a test of our character. I think we'll get there and we test the resolve of Americans.
Just to remind us that we have that fight. We haven't had such a fight since the great depression."

Jay-Z believes President Obama did the right thing by supporting same-sex marriage whether or not it costs him votes.

Jay-Z was in Philly promoting his headlining act at the "Budweiser Made in America" festival in September.

Tickets go on sale May 23rd.

All proceeds will benefit the United Way.

You gotta be to survive nowadays :). However, he was really sincere in the video and I don't think he has anything to gain from this announcement.

I don't even know if I have a soul, to be honest. But I was taught that when the door is open I should run through it.

Now is 50 Cent going to make some video blasting him for it like when he blasted Kanye for going on Ellen?

Haaaa thankfully 50 Cent is non-factor!

I think 50 Cent probably supports gay marriage too. Hell I think most rappers do. It's just 'uncool' to talk about?

Yea, I wonder if 50 Cent is really as bigoted as his image tries to make him. He was with Chelsea Handler for a period and Chelsea has always been this big time fag hag who always has gay people on her show. If 50 hated gay people as much as he tries to present himself as being, I doubt he'd want to be around a woman who is so pro-gay on her show.

Well...I think you and I both know what was really keeping 50 around.

It wasn't the fact that she was this big "pro-gay" D-list talk show host and it wasn't because of her charming personality....

50 Cent is not a non-factor. At least...not anymore.

Hopefully we'll get Blue Ivy's press release soon also saying she supports Gay Marriage.

So, for the sole reason that Jay-Z supports Gay Marriage (not for his collaborations with Queen Bounce), he is suddenly awesome?

There was a recent study (I forget which country(/ies) it is now) where actually 70% of people were in favour of Gay Marriage. I guess that means most people are, in fact, awesome, including just about everyone on UKMIX?

My favorite part is when they ask him if the US economy is in recovery.
Okay, media, stop drinking the kool-aid. Jay has money, but Warren Buffet he's not.
And the answer that he gives is so wishy-washy.

Reminds me of when I used to work in a bookstore and we were asked questions we didn't know the answer too.
Person: When's the book arriving?
Me: You know, there's a lot of books arriving, everyday. Sometimes we get a lot. Sometimes we get a few. But when we get it, we get it. Thank you!

Precisely. I'm not sure how you deducted the 'sole reason' part, but Jay-Z has always been awesome to me for many reasons, and yes, everyone on UKMix is awesome too.

Might be Australia, although if it is, you're out with the figure just a tad...I think around 65% of people surveyed here are in support of gay marriage.

Couldn't care less... I'm not interested in Jay-Z's opinion, it's his music that matters and I don't like it.

So his opinion doesn't change about it and I won't buy his records just due to this...

It would be a huge step if someone like Nas, Chuck D or Common said that--not some egotistical negro who has no understanding of what's happening in the real world outside of any opportunity for him to make a profit.

Lmao yes, Jay-Z is more a modern rapper than anything, but I'm sure Nas or Chuck D would be in support. First someone has to want to interview them though.

I wouldn't put Common in the same category as those two. He's more in line with Jay-Z, personally at least.
