Springsteen and Streisand both made top 20 in the past with their "The Essential" albums.Rub_rb wrote:Were you really expecting another Sony budget catalog GH album with no new material nor promo to crack the Top 50??? :Sstevyy wrote:no essential? poor mimi.
I don't even expect it to make the Hot 200.
I always thought with itunes one day Greatest Hits albums wouldn't exist. I just see it as people can already get the hits one by one by being selective on the studio albums and unless your a big fan of the artist you would only like a couple of the hits and buy those so those people won't buy the album plus if your a fan you already probably have all the albums and thus wouldn't need the greatest hits except for maybe one or two new songs which you could buy individually instead of the whole album. I could see how you thought differentially though.NothingFails wrote:Springsteen and Streisand both made top 20 in the past with their "The Essential" albums.Rub_rb wrote:Were you really expecting another Sony budget catalog GH album with no new material nor promo to crack the Top 50??? :Sstevyy wrote:no essential? poor mimi.

The dropoff with GH albums are the biggest shockers of the downloading age... you'd think with people being so selective with what to buy, Greatest Hits albums would be the one sure thing that people continue to feel safe buying, whereas studio albums have always been bogged down with filler cuts and the sort.

But for people who buy cd's, you'd think they would want that one disc where they have all the "good songs" in one place. GH albums seemed to be the one thing that didn't take a hit when the downloading boom started in 2000, and suddenly they took the biggest hit of all. One would think people who are apprehensive about buying a CD with one or two singles would still go and buy a cd that is wall to wall with hit singles because they know the bang they're getting for their buck.fearlesswift13 wrote:I always thought with itunes one day Greatest Hits albums wouldn't exist. A Riri GH will hopefully perform similarly to Pink's Best of. It's just she hasn't given the label a CHANCE to push a GH package because she's been releasing new albums every year. Maybe if she doesn't release a new album this Fall (unlikelyphoenix83 wrote:You make a good argument, hadn't thought of it that way.fearlesswift13 wrote:I always thought with itunes one day Greatest Hits albums wouldn't exist. Does this mean there will never be a RiRi greatest hits?!!!
Well for those who download I guess. But still, you'd think in hard physical copies that GH albums would still be drawing in consumers. For instance, 10 years ago you'd think a 2-disc Janet and 2-disc Madonna hits album would be printing money, yet nobody bought them. Surely the price is cheap enough that you'd think people would think 30+ of Janet and Madonna's biggest hits for $15 or less would be a bargainDreams wrote:But ultimately I agree. In the age of iTunes and the declining CD, Greatest Hits are becoming almost obsolete. For example, instead of paying $12 for 15 songs on a GH album, why not just spend those $12 cherry picking your OWN personal favorite songs of the said artist? I do like the novelty of having getting a GH CD/digital album but for the casual music fan, iTunes makes it so easy to just get individual tracks.
That for me is alot harder to understand 30+ songs for $15 you'd have me sold. I guess some people don't know a deal when they see one or they were promoted very poorly. But that is very weird especially with it being before digital sales took overNothingFails wrote:Well for those who download I guess. Pink's was very weird how it was so succesful but Rihanna I think would suffer the most from this with her huge singles success it'd be much too soon because the people you would want to buy it would already have 90% of the songs because of how well she smashes digitally. I think she was the #1 digital artist in the U.S.? Her and Katy Perry would flop hard and its not because the material is bad but because everyone already has the songsDreams wrote:A Riri GH will hopefully perform similarly to Pink's Best of. Look at Adele. The four hits off her album sold a combined 15 million. And the album is still quickly approaching 10 million in its own right. You can't compare a studio album to a greatest hits album though. One has 8 non-singles and the other will have 2-3 new songs at the most. Its completely different.Dreams wrote:Look at Adele. This is so true! People already have downloaded (and are very familiar) with the hits. If this was the 1990s, she will do well like Madonna and Celine's Greatest Hits.fearlesswift13 wrote:Pink's was very weird how it was so succesful but Rihanna I think would suffer the most from this with her huge singles success it'd be much too soon because the people you would want to buy it would already have 90% of the songs because of how well she smashes digitally. But hasn't the whole "all in one place" thing always been considered a perk? Plus, if someone never bought an album by said artist, its the one to start with usually.GetBack wrote:This is so true! While that's true, are you REALLY saying most of the general public has the majority of Rihanna's greatest hits already? I'm not saying a Rihanna GH will do gangbusters but I can see it hitting 1 million after a couple years on the chart. That's assuming they promote it well with a couple new singles/videos with enough promo etc.fearlesswift13 wrote:You can't compare a studio album to a greatest hits album though.
