Which is the most successful song at the global level of the 21st Century sung by a woman? I think Rolling In The Deep or Poker Face.
Taking into account their Sales, Airplay, Longevity, Influence and Success Homogeneous In All Countries.

Hi John, I've had to edit your title and post to reflect a more discussion, rather than comparison based topic.

Please keep this civil everyone and let's stick to facts.

well in terms of sales PF and RITD seem around the same saleswise, airplay wise PF peaked around 114 on mediabase, while RITD peaked around 170 there, but then again airplay was different in early 2009 as opposed to now that we have more stations. Longetivity they had around the same longetivity. pokerface is listed as one of like 4 songs that lasted 8+ weeks at the runner up spot spending 9 weeks there after achieving #1. . and RITD was a HUGE hit this year, Pokerface was a HUGE hit in 2009. every summer it was heard everywhere. idk they both are around the same to me. .YOLO Golf Wang

That song would never be successful.

We Belong Together is a good mention.
I'd say Someone Like You too.

I...know...and I'm confused. I was referring to Biscuits thinking that people (Mariah fans) would mention "H.A.T.E.U." as one of the most successful songs of the twenty-first century sung by a woman.

If this thread is going to stay open, we need to define "successful". If so, then it all comes down to sales and impact.

If it's just "name your fav songs by females", then we have countless threads like that already, right?

I'd say Someone Like You. Not only because the song was itself very successful, topping the charts in many countries, but also because it helped its prent album to sell very strongly.

I think that for sheer impact in the UK, its Adele's Someone Like You - you have to live here, to understand just how big it was.

But from a worldwide perspective, I think we need to look back further, and the song of the decade should be awarded to Beyonce, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, P!nk, Alicia Keys or Adele.

I can't be bothered doing all the research, but it would be interesting to see these sorts of stats summarised for some of the tracks being mentioned:
- #1 in how many countries?
- #1 for how many weeks in the major markets
- End of year chart position in major markets
- Parent album sales
- US Airplay peak

Things like that. Pure sales would be less handy as they will favour singles from the last 3 years.

According to IFPI, Hips Don't Lie by Shakira was the best selling (and prob still is) single by a female artist, selling over 12 million copies WW.

Poker Face and Rolling In The Deep come pretty close though.

Using JimJim's methodology for these two examples

Adele - Rolling In The Deep - 10m+ sales

- #1 in how many countries?
10 major countries

- #1 for how many weeks in the major markets
#1 in the USA for 7 weeks

- End of year chart position in major markets
AUS - #5
CAN - #1
FRA - #2
GER - #4
ITA - #5
SPA - #18
SWI - #2
UK - #9
US - #1

- Parent album sales
Parent album is 21, which to date has shipped around 24m copies worldwide

- US Airplay peak
Reached a peak AI of 167.429m on Mediabase

Lady Gaga - Pokerface - 11m single sales

- #1 in how many countries?
15 major countries

- #1 for how many weeks in the major markets
13 weeks at #1 Germany

- End of year chart position in major markets
AUS - #14 [2008] #11 [2009]
AUSTRIA - #1
BEL - #1
CAN - #2
FIN - #1
FRA - #4
GER - #1
IRE - #3
ITA - #4
SPA - #13
NZ - #15
SWE - #4
SWI - #1
UK - #1
US - #2

#4 on Australia's decade end chart, #3 on Austria's, #2 on Germany's, #14 on the UK's, #42 on the USA's.

- Parent album sales
The Fame & The Fame Monster have combined shipped in excess of 16m copies

- US Airplay peak
Reached a peak AI of 117.042m on Mediabase

I'll do some more later, or someone else can do some. Wiki is pretty reliable for positions - not sales though. The sales estimations do not include ringtones/mastertones, which the IFPI do factor in - that Shakira song would be significantly less if you just include its download and physical sales.

^Ringtones more or less cost the same as digital singles, so I think IFPI including them in their totals kinda makes sense.

this sold 2,2 million copies in the US and 400k in the UK over the past 12 years. not to mention that it is a multi million certified ringtone in japan as well.

Moves LIke jagger sold over 3m copies in South Korea and heads for 5m in the US.. + 1m from the UK.. so it should be up there as well.

...and it came out in the 20th century, so it is irrelevant.
