Hi Mario/Donavan,

Is there certification for digital albums? I understand they are not included in Oricon charts?

Yes, digital albums are certified separately from physical copies!

So far though, there's only ever been ONE album certified Gold (or anything) for digital sales of over 100,000, and that was the "Songs for Japan" charity compilation album.

Would anyone have the complete chart run of Che'Nelle's Love Songs? That album had some EXTRAORDINARY longevity (especially for Japan's standards) opening with like 10k or something and now having sold over 270k.

Thanks in advance!

^ You're a hero, Pororo! That's a Timmy-worthy chart run

Sorry to bother you again so shortly after, but would you happen to have the complete CR for Rihanna's Loud? If you do I'll be forever grateful and not bother you again for a while : P

Yeah. So, in my honest opinion, the record doesn't really count as they, despite being Korean, release music the Japanese way, i.e. every single physical release, and with all the idol-related promo included (multiple versions, promotional events), and even sing in Japanese.

That doesn't compare to any of those other acts.

That's what I was wondering. Their nationality may be foreign, but the music certainly isn't. That's why I'm always confused as to why KARA and other Korean acts are always listed as "Western" on RIAJ's certifications page whenever they release J-Pop music. :-?

They are Korean, they are foreign artists so the record still counts of course! Adele releasing music in the US she is still foreign/British. Celine Dion, Lara Fabian releasing French music in France, they are still foreign/international artists.

Only KARA has been listed as Western/International by RIAJ, but they do this accordingly to how the record label has listed them to the RIAJ. What's the difference?? I can only think of the Album rental market. It's still quite a big market and for International artists the albums are only available after 1 year.

Was Born To Die by Lana Del Rey released in Japan? If so, is there any sales info?

I think you missed my point. My point was that Tohoshinki release music LIKE Japanese bands do, NOT like foreign bands.

The Carpenters, The Beatles, all those released singles like Western acts, i.e. generally only for lead singles or the occasional single, just one version, and that's it.

TVXQ release music like all the other Japanese idols. lots of releases, tons of different versions with different jacket covers etc, concert sales, handshake events, other kinds of promo, tons of performances for every release. In terms of that, there is no way the two are even remotely related.

So yes, I agree the records stands purely on the basis of their nationality, but I think the circumstances are so vastly different that it's not entirely fair.

They are Korean, they are foreign artists so the record still counts of course! Adele releasing music in the US she is still foreign/British. Celine Dion, Lara Fabian releasing French music in France, they are still foreign/international artists.

Yes I understood your post and I agree they are different type of artists, but your initial post said that you don't really think the record counts and that's what I disagreed with.

It is similar to Celine Dion in France, she holds many records as a foreign/international artist even though some might think it's not be fair cause she released french music and others don't. But the point is she is still a foreign/international artist even if she sings in French.

If hypothetically, a Dutch artist singing in German really blows up in Germany, he would still be considered a foreign/international artist regardless of what language he sings in. If an American band singing in Japanese became really succesfull in Japan, they are still a foreign artist. Or if Che'nelle suddenly sells physical singles like she does digitally, she will always be a foreign artist. Maybe not comparable/fair to other international artists, but the record is still official!

I agree with all this, however, there should be some kind of records for 'English language artists/albums/singles' in Japan.

Much like Adele's 21 spent longer at No 1 in France than any other English-language album by a soloist.

^ Oh yes they do often report for Western/english language records and they also report records for "Non-Japanese Asian". When Tohoshinki got their 3rd #1 they were the first Non-Japanese Asian artists to get 3 #1s.(surpassing a Chinese singer who had 2 #1s)

But in this case they surpassed the carpenters as the highest selling foreign artists so they reported that. (And they were ofcourse already the highest selling Non-Japanese Asian artist )
