Are You Influenced By Charts with appeal to an artist?

For example if you saw an artist like Adele having #1s everywhere your influenced to go with the bandwagon and listen and buy her songs and albums. And the later if your fave artist like for example Daughtry before was a huge hit in US and suddenly with their new album they lose appeal to people and you too get influenced and decide not to listen to their album or singles at all.

Do you sometimes get influenced by this trend? or you just go with what you like ? give us situations.

NO.

okay maybe 0.5% yes. I do check out acts that are everywhere and very popular, out of curiosity. but that they are popular doesnt influence me to like them. and my favs DON'T get dumped by me if they lose popularity. they get dumped if they release crap music :P

not really, it's nice to see an artist I like do well, but if I check out a "hit" and like it, it's likely because I actually like the song

I am actually the COMPLETE Opposite!!! Most of my Favourite bands / Artists aren't very mainstream anymore. It actually puts me off when an Artist is over Exposed. I prefer loving "Hidden Gems". However I do wish success for them, yet at the same time I don't want the music ruined with the whole country singing it. In cases like that I end up skipping the track on my iPod or have to delete it altogether.

For instance I used to love Gotye's STIUTK.. Especially when it started blowing up in Aus/NZ. I still think its a good song but the novelty of its brilliance has worn off a little. :(

So yes and No. I descovered Ed Sheeran and Lana Del Rey through Buzz and I was pleasantly suprised

I do quite frequently, but not all the time though and not as in "stanning" for the most succesful act at the time either (Lady Gaga, Adele or Eminem) Don't get me wrong!!!
I dont' try to sound as this INDIE Music lover that falls for Tori Amos , Bjork or Imawhoami... not at all, I love mainstream only...
Adele and such, it wasn't something that I would listen to if it wasn't because she was #1 I reckon... same with The Wanted's "Glad You Came" or Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe", but it was purely curiousity... trying to listen to those songs that went to #1 everywhere... I also have LMFAO's "Sexy and I Know It" in mind... HOWEVER, it doesn't necessarily mean that I will LOVE or support those acts like crazy.... on the other side I have people like...
Alanis Morissette's "Guardian", Melanie C's "The Night EP" or many Japanese acts that are obviously not international succesful acts...

Look at Katy Perry, she has had one of the most succesful albums EVER (singles-wise), but I still don't love her, support her and I think of her as a very bad live performer...

Gotye "Somebody That I Used to Know" and FUN's "We Are young" Are IMHO one of the worst #1 tracks EVER! I would NOT spent a cent on these acts, I just detest them now that they're everywhere...

I do listen to both sides... what is popular, and what is not that Popular... if it happens to be succesful for some reason, it's not really my fault ! :P I don't just "jump on the bandwagon".
I remember loving Lana del Rey's "Video Games" when I first looked at her thread in the POP Section, and she wasn't popular or "going viral" yet... I just happned to love her, I didn't know she'd be this big in the UK to be honest :) !!

PS: There's other people that I had LOVED and supported before and I just lost interest on them as whole package, even if they're still "popular" ... ie: Britney Spears, JoJo, Ciara and Jessica Simpson, they just don't appeal to me anymore as they used to :( !

I think everyone is to some extent, there is a natural tendency to follow a crowd as-such.

That being said, as many stated, it can be purely curiosity. If a song is smashing around the world, of course I want to know what all the fuss is about and check it out... doesn't necessarily mean you'll love it though.

However, I'm incredibly easy to please it would seem as far as mainstream stuff goes... looking at the Australian Top 50 this week, there are only 3-4 songs that I don't actually like and they aren't even that bad IMO.

On the other hand, if an act I love becomes less popular (e.g. Ashlee Simpson, Panic At The Disco), I'm certainly not going to stop checking out their music.

Not at all... I used to stan so hard for Lady GaGa back in the day when 'Just Dance' was barely making it's appearance in the Canadian iTunes Top 200

It took her AGES to conquer the UK and the US... I remember Canada and Australia were the first countries who embrace her and Canada was the country where 'The Fame' was first released.. I went nuts that day

Me, actually im somehow affected and i dont really know the reason why must be the hype. and the song that is usually high in itunes is catchy so i usually check it out all the time

which is why mostly my songs ryt now are all modern and mainstream
but i still get unknown acts once in a while but mostly all are known songs

i used to listen to music that isnt mainstream :P

Not at all actually.

I don't like the most number 1's, because they are way too mainstream..

I go with my own research for new songs. Not going to listen to chart music in full.
