could she top Billboard ? I suppose Mayer will do 60-85, Adele too.
I would love her tooooo, but I don't think she could. Amazing voice.
Both albums were huge successes in the UK, while Rebecca Ferguson's album did only OK there.
Wait wait... Komm mal von deinem hohen Ross runter.
I don't know, how you describe "did okay" but the album was a success with over 500k sold vying for 600k and 2x Platinum.

Her UK success has nothing to do with the US one. We will see how far she can go in the USA, but with some promotion etc she can sell much.
Propably because I only call the best of the best as having done (very) well. For me, an album really has to surprise me to change my opinion about it  .
Therefore looking at its chart run, I think it looks OK, but nothing outstanding. OK doesn't mean it did bad: Not many albums do OK, therefore that's quite a compliment.

It's true you can't say that UK success = US success or not, it's just that Leona Lewis and Susan Boyle already did very well in the UK with their albums, while Rebecca Ferguson did less there and success there CAN mean that an album does well there, but mustn't!

Maybe because most people thought that they were going to fall off the chart as soon as Pumped Up Kicks lost its momentum?

Timmy.

SuBo's last album sold less than 350K in the UK and she performed on BGT Final with over 12 million people watching and her album failed to re-chart (sold less than 900 units). Leona's last album sold 600K - dif years with the ind the way that it is - but then you just don't understand that at all.

Jason Aldean's My Kinda Party is still in the top 30 18 months after the release - that is worth a WOW 8-) .
and Pink Floyd still charts from time to time and is over 800 weeks on the billboard 200 now that indeed deserves several WOWs 8-)
Yes all you talk about is wow worthy...

Though I have to say it was a little rude to interrupt Nickf1 and claim why is this one special when someone has done this, that bla bla..
I never said anything bad about Foster the People. I think they've done great. I was just referring to the success of Pink Floyd since we were talking about Wow worthy things. :) I'm sorry if I came off rude to anyone though

I also wasn't comparing to their careers as a whole but as the first album following their casting show win  .

@NothingFails: Yes, I gotta say that I also wasn't too sure about that album's performance at the same time one year ago. But it seems like they had Pumped Up Kicks to build major interest and their alternative singles did their part not to be the only reasons to buy the album for the people but be among them.
This of course stands out that a debut album can chart over such a long time especially with "only" one real hit single. It's just that today so many albums in a similiar case don't do that well, while they should rather do like Torches did.

I see your point especially as they could've reached the top 10 if both releases were in one week but it's still a good result considering that they are seen as a scene act and are far over their eak now...

No idea who is that Jason, I have just put my feelings about Foster's album (which is one of the best albums ever recorded IMO) and i'm so glad that they are still selling after one year being in the chart and with only 1 hit single.
Yes there's no problem about it. I might have sounded a bit direct, you know the internet doesn't carry emotions and messages the right way which is why they can easily turn into antagonisms despite not being meant that way. So Foster The People have a successful album and they did their job well, just wanted to note that there are other current albums which might deserve a WOW more (of course as always in my opinion).

----

My estimations:

Rebecca Ferguson | No. 15-20 ~ 15k
Regina Spektor | No. 2 ~ 50k
Travis Porter | No. 4-5 ~ 30-40k
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes | No. 30-40 ~ 10k
For Today | No. 25-30 ~ 12k
The Walkmen | No. 15-20 ~ 15k
The Lumineers | No. 25-30 ~ 12k
Sigur Ros | No. 7-10 ~ 22-30k
Wade Bowen | No. 100-120 ~ 4k

MAYER IS MAJOR

MercyMe, Slash and Sara Bareilles Bow in Top 10

Who needs Twitter or Playboy when you’ve got a chart-topping album?

Columbia guitar-slinging heartthrob John Mayer debuts at #1 this week with his sixth studio effort, the '70s’ singer/songwriter-influenced Born and Raised, which nabs 231k in total sales.

That makes him the easy winner over XL/Columbia labelmate Adele’s monumental 21, which adds another 53k to its now-staggering 9.2 million, good for #2.

19/Arista Nashville’s Carrie Underwood stays steady at #3, with Fair Trade/Columbia Christian pop-rockers MercyMe debuting at #4 and Syco/Columbia’s One Direction rounding out the leaders at #5, giving Columbia’s Team Stringer/Barnett four of the Top 5 and Doug Morris' Sony Music all five.

Dik Hayd/EMI Label Services’ Slash (#6) and Epic’s Sara Bareilles (#8), with her five-song Once Upon Another Time EP, are both new entries to the Top 10, alongside holdovers such as Mercury Nashville’s Lionel Richie (#7), Capitol/EMI’s Now 42 (#9) and Blue Note/EMI’s Norah Jones (#10), giving the soon-to-be merged EMI three in the Top 10.

Warner Bros.’ New Zealand singer/songwriter Kimbra, who sings the duet with Gotye on the smash, “Somebody That I Used to Know,” is the next highest chart newcomer at #12, followed by 19/Interscope’s Haley Reinhart (#16), Sony Masterworks’ Tedeschi Trucks Band (#18), J&R Adventures’ Joe Bonamassa (#22), 19/RCA’s Kris Allen (#23) and Cooking Vinyl’s The Cult (#34).

Universal Republic’s Florence + the Machine (#36), Universal Republic’s Hunger Games soundtrack (#41) and Glassnote’s Mumford & Sons (#47) all re-enter the Top 50.

Universal Republic’s Of Monsters and Men (#37-17, +97%) is the week’s biggest double-digit gainer, largely thanks to a $2.99 Amazon special. 19/RCA’s Kelly Clarkson (#49-32, +45%) and Def Jam/IDJ’s Rihanna (#31-30, +11%) also show upward mobility.

The big releases over the next few weeks include RCA’s Usher (6/12), IDJ’s Justin Bieber (6/19), WB’s Linkin Park and A&M/Octone’s Maroon 5 (6/26), RCA’s Chris Brown (7/3) and Atlantic’s Zac Brown Band (7/10).
Finally, I can access to UKMIX. My English is not so good.

The huge surprise propably is Kimbra. Her first EP didn't even reach the top 100, she doesn't even have a moderate hit and so far has been just known as a duet partner (which doesn't have to mean a thing considering e.g. Janelle Monae is the duet partner of a current huge hit, yet her current album didn't even re-enter the top 200) - still she sold more in her debut week than other artists of big name with current hit singles...

MAYER LOOKS GOOD
FOR ANOTHER WEEK

Even with 50-60% Drop, He Should Remain at #1; Spektor, Sharpe, Sigur Ros Debut

May 30, 2012

Next week’s HITS Album sales chart should be a case of Born again.
That’s because Columbia Records singer/songwriter/guitar-slinger and shaggy-haired heartthrob John Mayer looks likely to nab the top spot for a second straight appearance, with Born and Raised slated to sell around 50-60% less than the 220k he grabbed to make him #1.

The results are based on one-day sales figures from those retailers who haven’t turned their stores into Mitt Romney campaign headquarters.

As far as debuts go, Sire Russian alternative songstress Regina Spektor’s sixth studio album, What We Saw from the Cheap Seats, is slated for the highest finish, with a projected total of between 30-35k. Her previous album, Far, bowed with 50k in June ’09.

Vagrant SoCal neo-hippies Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, which goes through INgrooves Fontana, return with Here, the follow-up to their left-field 2009 success, Up from Below.

XL Icelandic avant-rockers Sigur Ros’ Valtari, their sixth album, is headed for between 20-23k.

RCA Atlanta rap trio Travis Porter is eyeing 12-15k for their debut album, From Day 1.

June begins a roll-out of major releases, including Usher (6/12), Justin Bieber and Kenny Chesney (6/19), as well as Linkin Park and Maroon 5 (6/26), with Chris Brown (7/3) and Zac Brown Band (7/10) both slated for July.

This past week, the industry went up against last year’s debut of Lady Gaga's Born This Way, which opened with 1.1m for the period ending May 29, which accounts for the downward trend.

Album sales were up 3% vs. last week, down 22% vs. same week last year and down 3% year to date.

Track sales were up 2% vs. last week, up 2% vs. same week last year and up 6% year to date.

TEA sales were up 3% vs. last week, down 15% vs. same week last year and flat year to date.

The post-Memorial Day slump sets in on next week's chart, with no title even coming close to six figures. Look for Adele's NBC Sunday night special to boost sales at digital retailers, so don’t count her out, even while we're giving John Mayer a slight lead for #1 in week two. Here's how it looks headed into the weekend:

John Mayer (Columbia) 70-75k
Adele (XL/Columbia) 55-60k
One Direction (Syco/Columbia) 40-45k
*Regina Spektor (Sire) 35-40k
Carrie Underwood (19/Arista Nashville) 30-35k
*Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros (Vagrant) 28-32k
Now 42 (Capitol/EMI) 24-27k
Lionel Richie (Mercury Nashville) 22-25k
*Sigur Ros (XL) 20-23k
Luke Bryan (Capitol Nashville/EMI) 20-23k
Norah Jones (Blue Note/EMI) 20-23k
Gotye (Fairfax/Universal Republic) 18-21k
Slash (Dik Hayd/EMI Label Services) 15-18k
Nicki Minaj (YM/CM/Universal Republic) 15-18k
fun. (Fueled By Ramen) 15-18k

Kinda low sales... Luke Bryan could be No. 10 with just 20k :o . That speaks for his amazing longevity (the album was released 9 months ago) but there should be some more big releases which push the sales up a bit.

Surprisingly great result for One Direction, though it's clear that when albums are so close saleswise, a little increase can mean to climb several positions.

I think No. 1 goes to John Mayer for ~ 75% and Adele could do it for 20% (5% is something unexpected).

no mention of Rebeca, guess she's not doing THAT well, despite being top 10 on ITunes Albums...

fingers crossed Sigur Ros score their first US top 10!!!!!! If I remember well, Takk made top 30, their last album top 20, so this one should logically be top 10 :D even if it's not their best and it's getting meh reviews

Darnit, the first prediction was Mayer with a 50%/60% drop from 220k, and now it's 70-75k? Shucks : (

A second week over 100k would've been unlikely but awesome.

Top 10 on ITunes can mean everything and nothing. You can be top 10 on ITunes while only reach the top 50 on the Billboard 200 - it's not very representive!

I think it's kinda sad that albums drop so much today. Some years ago, 50-60% is something normal, some even dropped less and a very few even increased in the 2nd week. Today, an album just becomes irrelevant too soon, which is very sad. One day an album can be the total it-thing and the next day, it's dated: Wished some more of today's albums could stand against that trend. I guess in no year before so many albums left the Billboard 200 15 weeks or less after having reached the top 10, which is actually shocking considering an album is among the most interesting records and 3 months later no one gives a damn about it.

Someone should ask the likes of Mumford & Sons or Jason Aldean how they have managed to have such consistency on the album chart. I think it is still possible to have a long running album in the US but it has to have a special kind of word of mouth factor. Overhyped albums which have big first week sales are never gonna stick around.

Is it really due to overhyping?
Many recent albums flops were explained with a lack of hype...

I guess the problem also is that albums reach No. 1/the top 10 too easy. Many of them would debut lower if released some years ago but stayed on the chart way longer, which is what most artists should rather appeal to reach.

But can you promote an album so that it debuts relatively low but charts for a long time?

I'm always impressed by albums that stay long in the lower part of the Billboard 200 without ever reaching a high peak or albums that stay on the Heatseeker Chart (or in the lower parts of the genre charts) for a long time. Too bad that they happen so rarely nowadays!

is Mayer really overhyped? "Shadow Days" has done okay (#38) but it's hardly like it's this supersmash dominating the charts, its not nearly as successful as his last two leadoff singles (and even his biggest hit peaked at #12, he's more an album seller than singles act).

Not sure if that was a response to my comment but I wasn't referring to Mayer when I talked about overhyped albums/artists.

I don't know if it's possible but I hope Adele adds another layer of likeable to her image tomorrow night so that it may boost the album to pass 100k this week and next week, I can taste that Diamond now.

That's assuming that NBC will get it a decent audience ratings, which I think will happen, only because of the power of ADELE.
