Honestly, I never understood the phrase "overrated". It's not like critics are calling this the new style of the century and it CANNOT be overrated because it is popular BECAUSE people like it.

Nothing can EVER be overrated because it is exactly as popular as it is :lol:

She wrote it herself with her guitarrist Travish Crowe and the singer from Marianas Trench, Josh Ramsay.

It was intended to be a folk song but Josh the one who produced this make it a pop song.

overrated is, not good quality music (in terms of creativity, talent, genuine artistic value, originality etc.) which is enjoying big commercial success. so basically, generic commercial garbage like this Call Me Maybe is overrated, bcos theres a lot of much better quality music made by more talented artists. but this song happened to become a huge hit bcos maybe it was in the right place at the right time or god only knows why. and bcos the mainstream audience loves this kind of commercial cheesy generic songs.

so this is what overrated means, in my interpretation. kind of like what Serby said, its something that is much more successful than it would "deserve" to be.

that said, its all just a matter of subjective opinion, bcos who am I, or who are you, to decide how much success this or that song deserves. there is no rule saying that rubbish music cannot be successful after all. if listening to a crap song makes many ppl happy, then let those many ppl enjoy their crap music!
