Billboard is always very conservative with their estimates.

GetBack wrote:Miley became annoying when she grew up, with all the drama of her shedding off her innocence and all and of course, her supposed feud with her dad. She tried to hard to be sexy, unlike Britney, Christina, Lindsay Lohan, who were all in the magazines when they became full-fledged sex kittens. She doesn't have a strong sex appeal, it looked really forced on her.

As for Britney, she was courting controversy since the first day of her existence: she teased in "...Baby One More Time" video and Rolling Stone cover, stripped in "Oops!...I Did It Again" performance, flaunted in the "Don't Let Me Be the last to Know" and "Slave 4 U" videos and bared her flesh in "Toxic" up to present.

With Justin Bieber, it's still very awkward because (1) he still looks like a kid, and (2) his stigma as an artist is the "kid-friendly singer who is very conservative, decent and proper" which is hard to erase with his attitude of being always polite and nice, and hugging young girls and being a role model to kids. He is no Justin Timberlake (back in 2000-2002) whose image was a bit of a "playboy and hopeless romantic crooner" or Usher (back in 1997-1999) who had the image that can entice a mature audience with the sexual innuendo of his music despite his age at that time.
All of what you said is true. Even though Britney of course started out as a 16 year old pop star, she marketed herself as a sex symbol that grown up men felt like perverts for wanting to get with and tried to establish herself more as a teen Madonna/Janet than as a Disney star.

Even though Bieber is 18, he still looks like a kid (and there is one photo of him they always use on The Soup where he looks like a grown lesbian) but I don't think he's distanced himself enough from the image of that guy who mostly appeals to 10 year old girls. Timberlake for example waited until those little 10-11 year old girls who loved him in 1998 were a bit older and ready for something more mature and plus he was able to distance himself from NSYNC... if you see a lot of adult straight men, they'll say NSYNC sucked but solo Justin was good. Bieber has been on his own the whole time, so he isn't able to do the Timberlake/George Michael thing and overcome a teen heartthrob past and essentially start fresh solo.

So can't he turn into a sexy guy just because he looks like a kid? I mean there must be a way if he really wants to escape from the "little sweet teen idol"-image...

No. He looks like a little lesbian girl.

Well, he's already way sexier than a year ago :)
I think he will sell 'only' 400k, but won't fall that hard.

I think Bieber is absolutely gorgeous.

But that's just my opinion; his numbers are darn impressive. And if you don't agree then you had ridiculous expectations to begin with.

Yes, it is hard to be a sex symbol when you look prepubescent. Even with shorter hair, Bieber still looks like a teen lesbian. He just seems to give off a very sexually neutered look.

Image

Bieber needs to radically change his image, something besides shorter hair. Timberlake and George Michael are the two most obvious cases I can think of of guys who went from disdained teen boyband heartthrobs that little girls got wet for to credible artists in short time, and they both radically changed their looks to differentiate themselves from NSYNC and Wham. Bieber is going to have to completely sever himself from Baby and Never Say Never if he wishes to be taken seriously by more than those who loved him in 2010.

i can't get his previous haircut out of my memory. He remains unsexy in my world.02.

400k for his new album is a mighty huge projection.

Same here. I have rethought my opinions about guys I thought were too young/emo at one point (Zac Efron and Joe Jonas) but yet I still don't find anything sexy about The Biebs yet.

I guess 400k is a mixed blessing. I think people expected more because Gaga opened with a million, and Bieber is supposedly the male superstar equivalent to her, and even Coldplay's latest opened higher than that without appealing to an eager population of screaming teens who must have the album the moment it comes out.

I used to hate Jonas Brothers too then Joe grew up and changed his look into a more masculine and adult image and now I think he's sexy, I thought Justin Timberlake was hideous when N'Sync came out then he made himself over and I thought he was gorgeous. So please, don't go there.

So seriously, spare me the "you just hate Bieber" thing. If Bieber makes himself over to something more masculine and mature and looks good, I'll be the first to admit he's attractive. But as of now, he looks like a prepubescent Rachel Maddow.

btw thinking a guy is good looking doesn't mean you have to like the music. Case in point: Joe Jonas, Drake, Mike Posner, Chris Daughtry, Isaac Slade of The Fray, etc... So I don't think disliking ones music makes you immune to having an opinion on their looks.

I agree! I mean, Justin Bieber sadly didn't pull it off as well as the other squeaky-clean boys who grew up. It's just way too early for him, and thus we got a moderate to relatively-weak reception to his supposed maturity, and let's not get started with the annoying facial expressions he does these days like in the single cover of "Boyfriend"...

Just compare his new "look"

to these transformations....

exactly, all three of those guys were once in Bieber's shoes as teen mag pin-ups who had an unthreatening image too and they got older and transformed into sexy looking men. If Bieber could pull the same I would b the first to admit he looks good, but IMO he still looks like he did in 2010, he just has shorter hair IMO.

Do you know Taiwan? If not, check the map, it's in Southeastern Asia and beside mainland China, BUT YOU MUST KNOW, it doesn't belong to China!

That's good for Linkin Park... Maroon 5 was clear to sell around that number because Moves Like Jagger hugely pushed their population and they also have a successful lead single. Compared to this, Linkin Park have been dropping from album to album since Meteora so I thought they could only sell 150k at best... I'm curious what they make out of this!

And if Justin Bieber is going to sell around 200k, his 2nd week drop could be relatively mild, which is neat. The last album to sell 200k+ in its second week was Lil Wayne's Tha Carter IV in September 2011 (that is already 9 months ago :o ).

Maroon 5 and Linkin Park have both lost a lot of their original album audience though. Maroon 5 have become a soccer mom band and that's turned off a lot of those who bought Songs About Jane, and Linkin Park's last album was a bit of a flop for their standards and while their new song is doing well on rock radio, I don't think the comparisons to Coldplay are exactly going to help it sell to the frat audience who ate their earlier work up.

^ As long as the soccer moms buy the album, I don't see a problem. They'll likely never do It Won't Be Soon Before Long's numbers again, let alone Songs About Jane's, but if they can keep churning out Platinum-albums that'll be great already.
