Good luck, Vindrag!

Maybe this will help: my aunt, a smoker for 50 years, is currently battling lung cancer, has gone through rounds of chemo, but had the cancer return and now likely has 6-12 months left to live. Not only that, but the disease is painful for her and all her loved ones.

If you quit now, your chances of meeting the same fate drop exponentially.

Do it for your sake and the sake of your friends and family.

I will! Thanks!! I'm determined!

But damn!! It's hard already!!! I will go and buy some nicotine gums tomorrow I guess - I don't want it anymore!!

And sorry to hear about your aunt! I can imagine the struggle and the pain :(

All the best bro, I know how hard it can be!!

I've heard that Day 3 is generally the hardest but I've quit a few times (I know, shut up) and I've never found a pattern - cravings come up at random times.

And I'm pretty good when I'm sober... but after a few drinks I'm about ready to climb the walls...

Just keep remembering why you're giving up. And stay strong!

Good luck with quitting, Vindrag! I'm not sure whether this is something you've previously considered but I know Allen Carr's "Easy Way to Stop Smoking" has been hugely successfully in helping people through the quitting process, and if you take the reviews on Amazon.co.uk as an example, nearly 90% gave it 5/5 stars. It's worth a try!

Well, honestly, you look like a strong person(don't ask me why  ) so i'm sure you'll stop smoking!

Fingers crossed you'll do it! 8-)

Thanks! I'll check it out - there's probably something similar in Sweden! :)

Day 3 huh? I'm ready! 8-)

And Raaaaaa - thank you! That is what annoys me. I know myself very well... but realizing that I'm addicted to this drug makes me feel both like a loser but also like a fighter. I don't want anything like cigarettes controlling me like this. But it's tough allright!

I feel kind of powerless now.. I want a fag! *starts dancing to the music*

Oh yeah, me too. Drinking made it much more difficult. I'd get such a crazy need for a cigarette just by drinking one beer.

Always keep in mind why you decided to quit. Think that once you get past the first few days it gets easier and just remember that it's mind over matter.

You'll do it, Vindrag.
I'm not a smoker, and I've never been addicted to anything so I can't understand what you're going through.
However, my father loves telling the story of how he went from smoking more than 1 pack of cigarettes in one day, to smoking none the next day. And he didn't use any nicotine helpers.

Much congrats to you Vindrag on quitting! Your lungs breathe their collective sigh of relief as does your pocketbook.

Jokes aside, I wish you all the strength in the world to battle your addiction. Quitting anything that's brought you any sense of joy or relief from life's stresses is never easy but I know you can do it. May the force of *insert the name of your fave artist here* be with you. 8-)

Dan, I'm so proud of you!!! It's time to quit this addiction and I think you doing very well so far (you should try some nicotine gums for one or two weeks, then stop it for real, though). I root for you, kompis! :D

Well, I've lost a second-degree cousin years ago and I still remember his pain (he got a lung cancer) and how everybody around him felt. :(

So, I don't want you to have the same fate, I want to have that old spontaneous, funny, kind, understanding and sleepless friend for always. You better take care of your health! :)

And remember...

Don't give up

Forgot to mention in my earlier post that despite never smoking at all in my lifetime, I've watched both my parents struggle with nicotine addiction & watched them both fall on and off the wagon several times as I've grown up - sometimes it was long term (my Mum quit twice for around 5-9 years), other times short term (my Dad only lasted anywhere between 1-6 months before quitting for 3 years).

Both quit again this year and this time I'm hoping it'll be for life. They've both gone cold turkey, as they have every other time they've quit and neither of them miss it at all. The only thing they have noticed is they've both stacked on the weight unfortunately, but that can happen apparently. My mum likened the need for a cigarette to something out of Bugs Bunny/a Warner Bros cartoon - the whole yes/no game your mind plays with you.

Dan, just remember you've got a whole forum of people behind you and you are doing well so far. Think of the money you'll save and the health benefits.

Vindrag, you don't need those nicotine gums. It's all psychological. Be strong, think of something else to do. Plant flowers on your balcony. Phone someone. Post a message here. If you manage this in 14 days you can't stand the smell of it and won't touch it. Keep away from smokers for a bit. Don't get into stressful situations. Take some days off. Don't work too much. Especially your smoking friends will get you back smoking. Tell them, they should never ever give you a cigarette.
No, it's not me.

Thanks for the support everyone! I really mean it! I find this extremely difficult, and actually returned reading all the encouraging posts in here when I couldn't sleep last night! It made me a bit calmer. Day 2! :D

I like every song on KanYe's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy with the exception of the dull, Bon Iver featured track, "Lost In The World". It's because of the boring beginning that I can't get into that song; whenever I skip the beginning, I find the track to be very enjoyable.

Back to smoking...

Thank you Joel! It was incredibly tough not entering and buying a package. I tell ya! My head was about to explode. Today I've been home all day, so no worries. Except for some hours ago when I felt desperate and actually was battling in my head if I should pick up one of yesterdays cigarette butts or not and light it up :o
