Nice list, Nelson, although it's not very comprehensive and, imo, too much hinged on certifications like your album lists.

It's impossible to compile a list based on real sales, since there's no institution that tracks them, like the RIAA in the US or BPI in the UK.

If you want a reasonbly comprehensive list, you have to rely on reports from record companies, magazine articles, artist interviews and plain estimates.

That's what I've done over the years and I posted the result last year on Dotmusic.

From the article above, the label didn't mention the worldwide sales but only in US alone.
In 1950-1970, US is a developed country with music industry while outside US, almost all countries are under developing. So lack the market such as Asia. So worldwide sales of particular artist at that time was small when compared to today's artist worldwide sales. So it's so hard to believe that most singles from that time sold huge. Elvis sold that much in US might be due to less choices at that time when compared today there's so many choices artists. (from dominated by one artist in 1950s to todays' diversified by many artists). I remember before album "Thriller" by Michael Jackson, soundtrack "Saturday Night Fever" was the best-selling albums.

Yes, "White Christmas" was certied platinum by the BPI, but that was for sales for the re-issue of the single in the UK alone!
BPI started tracking sales at the end of the 1950's, which is why total UK sales are not known.

Believe me, WC was (and still is) a gigantic big seller with more than 30 million copies sold.
Until Elton's tribute to Princess Diana, it was always considered to be the biggest selling single ever. Even Guinness mentioned it.

Since 1942, when it was first released, it sold in large quantities every year, because of its seasonal character, the movie and the song itself.

It sold about 15 million units in the US alone, where it was #1 on three separate occasions and stayed in the charts for 72 weeks alltogether (from 1942 to 1962).
Even the album 'White Christmas' charted again this year.

BTW, this all documented. If you do your homework, you'll find it.

I based the above list on one of the appendixes of the book "The Book of Golden Discs" by Joseph Murrells. It contains stories on all million selling records (singles and albums) from the very beginning (1908) until about 1980.
It's an old book, but it's unique and everyone who is interested in the history of recorded music should have one.

Since what you listed #28 on the Eurochart, is it "Music & Media"? Since the chart's not based on sales, it's based on some kind of point system, and hence the year-end, too, based on point system, so don't use "Music & Media" chart compared to Oljo Eurochart.
