The world number three took under an hour to see off his Spanish competitor on Court One in his second Olympics, dominating his opponent with a series of ferocious aces.
However the Scotsman will face tough opposition in the semis after Almagro battled a shoulder injury that heavily reduced his stroke making Murray's journey largely easier.
Serbia’s Novak Djokovic awaits Murray in the last four as he hunts a gold medal to heal his Wimbledon wounds. One win in his next two matches will guarantee Murray a medal.
Murray, who is close to his second final at Wimbledon in the space of four weeks, felt he dealt with the conditions well – including Almagro’s injury and the arrival of Prince William and his wife Kate.
He said: “You try not to change too much. I think that's one of the most important things. You need to try and stick to the tactics you had when you came out on court.
“It's difficult but it's something with experience and age you learn to deal with.
"The crowd make a lot of noise when they come out. It's great for tennis when you get people like that coming to watch. They were here during Wimbledon as well so it's good fun."

A Grand Slam singles champion earns 2,000 points. The next highest total possible is 1,500 ranking points to an undefeated ATP Tour Finals champion like Roger Federer in London 2011.
Masters 1000 (1,000 points), ATP 500 (500 points) and ATP 250 (250 points).
Thanks! So literally if you won all 4 grand slams you'd be pretty much top 5?
yea, with 8000 pts you d be 1-5 because nobody will get 2000 pts but you and even if some player wins 6 masters 1000, he will end up with ~7000-8000 pts...but it s still small to me, a GS title should give you 2500 pts esp. with the WTA system, therefore no random girl can hit the top.
Yep I totally agree, I am sick of these faceless number 1's.
I dissagree. A Grand Slam win already gives you a lot of points.

I just looked it up, and there has not really been "random" #1's. Actually there has only been 21 leaders on the WTA Tour and 25 leaders on the ATP tour in the past like 3 decades according to Wikipedia, which in this case looks reliable!

Which random girls are you talking about? The recent #1's Sharapova, Wozniacki and Azarenka have all deserved the position in my opinion...

I'm talking about the ones who get to world number 1 solely on tour points yet when it comes to the big occasions just fail. The pinnacle of the WTA tour and ATP tour are the grandslams and the Olympics, how embarrassing when the top ten are all out by the semi's.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2012/au ... o-olympics

Roger Federer survived a brutal examination against Juan Martín del Potro to reach the final of the Olympic men's tennis tournament at Wimbledon.

The world No1, who won his seventh Wimbledon title last month, needed three gruelling sets to beat the Argentinian, eventually winning a wonderful encounter 4-6, 7-6, 19-17 in four hours and 26 minutes, breaking the record set by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Milos Raonic earlier this week for the length of an Olympic match.

It had appeared a shock was on the cards when Del Potro, a former US Open champion, broke Federer to lead 5-3 in the first set, before holding serve to take a grip on the match.

Del Potro lost from two sets up against Federer in the quarter-final of the French Open earlier this year, and the memory of that defeat might have played on his mind as he failed to land a decisive blow in the second set. Federer saved a break point late in the second set and then levelled the match with a dominant display in the tie-break.

There was nothing to separate the two players in an exceptional third set. Each man had his chances, both wasting chances to break, and without a tie-break to settle the final set, the match effectively became a sudden death shoot-out.

Federer had been in a similar position against Andy Roddick in the 2009 Wimbledon final, a match he won 5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, 16-14 and it seemed a place in the final was in his when he broke to lead 10-9 – only for Del Potro to break back to love immediately.

Eight holds of serve followed, but Del Potro looked out of it again when Federer earned three break points at 14-14. Incredibly Del Potro saved them all and held. The torture continued for six more games until, finally, Federer broke for an 18-17 lead when Del Potro slapped a backhand into the net.

Asked to serve for the match for a second time, this time Federer made no mistake – even if he did need two match points, taking the second when Del Potro netted another backhand. A final against either Andy Murray or Novak Djokovic on Sunday awaits.

Sharapova - Kirilenko 6/2 - 6/3
I m waiting for Serena Vs Azarenka now.

It was an exhausting game indeed.
In the middle, I saw the male trampoline competition, I slept, I saw the judo finals and still managed to watch the end of the game. Unbelievable.

As I've said earlier in this topic prior to the Olympics Murray is going to win a medal. 8-)

Well when i look at the recent #1's, i don't think there is a player, who hasn't deserved the position, when they got it

Serena just destroyed Sharapova!

6-0 6-1

Serena also completes a Golden Career Grand Slam (2nd woman to ever do it, Graf being the 1st).

It's amazing how dominate Serena is! She easily took out Azarenka & Sharapova! Combined they only won 4 games against Serena :o

Serena imo is easily the best tennis female player there ever was! Can't wait for the US Open!

Mmm... nope. I'm sure Graf, Navratilova, Evert or Court have something to say about it.

Serena never dominated like the ones mentioned by argentino.

However, terrific win for her.
