Hi BoroButch, hmm...I think this is actually now 2xPlatinum...which is funny as a few of us were discussing Fleetwood Mac's total UK album sales just a few days ago (in one of those ABBA threads). This new update means that the 'Mac's total UK album certifications now amount to shipments of 8,460,000 - the question remains though : can they actually have sold 15-16M albums in the UK?BoroButch wrote: Fleetwood Mac - THE VERY BEST OF - Platinum - 14-Oct-02
Sorry!joao wrote:Faithless - FOREVER FAITHLESS - THE GREATEST HITS - Platinum - 16-May-05
(The second platinum should follow soon...)
Mariah Carey - THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI - Platinum x3 - 04-Apr-05
(How come they shipped 900k for an album that has not even sold 200k???)

it probably has mate, but they are not going to certify it, again, until it goes exactly 15xplatinum, are they!!!Doves wrote:Morning glory has been certified as 14xplatinum.
i mean it sold 4.16m up untill 1999. and look at how many times it re-enters the the top75.
Mg has got to have sold over 4.3m i would think by now.
I agree, any flop album can have a certification in UK. But many # 1 singles are never going to be certified.blade699 wrote:why do bpi have silver singles as 200,000, and the albums are only 60,000 for a silver album, also.
this makes no sense at all, as album sales are much higher.
they should swap them around!!!
It has sold 4,582,492 to July 2005. This does not include any possible record club sales, so it must have shipped 4,500,000.blade699 wrote:it probably has mate, but they are not going to certify it, again, until it goes exactly 15xplatinum, are they!!!Doves wrote:Morning glory has been certified as 14xplatinum.

(4,500,000 copies)
It's historical - when album certifications first began they were for monetary values rather than unit amounts. When certification awards began to be based on unit sales in January 1978 they merely converted the monetary value to units by using album price averages. As album sales were considerably lower back then, 60,000, 100,000 and 300,000 were not seen as low amounts. Of course, album sales have increased massively but certification levels have remained the same. Back in 1978, album sales were falling fast also (and, 1978 itself apart, continued to decline for a few years), the boom in album sales was a few years away.blade699 wrote:why do bpi have silver singles as 200,000, and the albums are only 60,000 for a silver album, also.

I read the explanation in BPI, in a paper about Chart Rules, but I don't remember itblade699 wrote:why do bpi have silver singles as 200,000, and the albums are only 60,000 for a silver album, also.
