Hi aez

I've been on holiday.

For most countries in the world, a certification means the number of albums shipped.

In the USA and Canada there is a different system.

If the album is a 2CD set, they call is 2 UNITS. If it gets a Gold Record Award - which is for 500,000 sales - it has actually only sold 250,000 copies.

Take Barbra Streisand. She had a 4CD box set "For the Record". When it got a gold award it had not shipped 500,000, it had shipped 125,000 copies.

So she sold 125,000 copies of the box set, but as each box contained 4CD's, the riaa counted it as 500,000!! and so made it a Gold Record.

If you have a 10 CD box set that goes Gold, it has only sold 50,000 copies.

So, my list is the total of actual albums shipped whether they are 2CD 3CD sets or whatever.

For further info check out

If it's not clear, please let me know and I will explain further.

Thanks Basil! :D

That's why Celine shipments are the same in both lists, because she hasn't any double CD album.

Thanks again!

Exactly right aez, Celine's "official" riaa total and actual numbers of albums shipped are the same because she has no double albums or box sets.

However it seems she will release a double CD of her French songs next month. If this ships 250,000 it will be Gold.

hummmm, i didn't found Croatia certifications levels on the RIAJ yearbook, but if the population is 4.5M, I'm almost sure that 50k is not for international artists also... I mean, look at New Zealand... Platinum is 15k and it's a developed (rich) country! and the population is also around 4-4.5M

All I know is that the American Life album sold 65.000 in its first week. If you find something else, please post :)

On other threads various forum members - notably - oldbloke have been supplying end of year sales charts for UK albums.

We now have the total figures for sales of Madonna's UK albums.

This runs from her first chart entry in 1984 to the end of 2004.

She sold 16,348,000 albums.

Figures for a couple of years are missing where she didn't sell enough to make the sales chart. However if we take the lowest figure on those charts this indicates her maximum possible sales in those years. The total of maximum possible missing sales is 573,000.

We can therefore say that to the end of 2004, Madonna sold between

16,348,000 and 16,921,000 albums in the UK.

I think this is the first country where we have such a total.

Thanks to the several dozen members of the forum who have helped to produce these figures.

"Confessions On A Dance Floor": New Madonna Album Re-Invents Dance
Music
for a New Generation

NEW YORK, NY -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 10/12/2005 -- On her highly
anticipated
new Warner Bros. Records release, "Confessions On A Dance Floor,"
Madonna
brilliantly re-invents dance music for our time. A stunning creative
leap
into the dazzling dimension of 'future disco,' these dozen new
originals
simultaneously capture the spontaneous thrill of the iconic superstar's
early hits.

Set to arrive in stores November 15th, and featuring the debut single
"Hung Up," scheduled for release October 17th, "Confessions On A Dance
Floor" once again establishes Madonna's preeminent place on the
international club scene. It's a mesmerizing sound that evokes and
embellishes all the excitement, energy and innovation that first set
her
apart as a dance music pioneer over two decades ago.

While Madonna's recent music has explored her thoughts and feelings on
everything from spirituality to politics, "Confessions On A Dance
Floor"
is, in the artist's own words, "about having a good time straight
through
and non-stop. I want people to jump out of their seats."

A genuine global superstar, packing stadiums worldwide with her
astonishing stage spectacles, Madonna, a multi-Grammy winner, has made
music history with international sales of over 200 million albums. Her
enormous influence has spanned 33 number one dance hits; five chart
topping albums and 46 Top 40 singles and 20 MTV Video Music Awards.

funny, not so long ago u had her at what.... 160/170M and now, suddenly, u "stick" with 200M... so u change Madonna's total up 30M in one sec. but u don't do that for "other artists" and then "other artists" fans are "liars, fake, blinds, whateva"?

around that lol I have her at around 170M albums and 70M singles, so it's not to far from your numbers I guess... but 200M albums only is very over-rated, like Celine's 170M albums or Mariah's 180M lol

yes when you consider all websites and official announced album sales mariah has sold 144 mio. albums (including TEOM of course) and around 41 mio. singles worldwide.

nobody knows how many copies madonna has sold, but no doubt she has higher singles sales (as whitney has too) and madonna has also sold more albums worldwide..

so officially madonna is the best selling female recording artist of all times, but what many ppl always forget, mariah debuted in 1990 and until 2000 she already sold between 120 and 128 mio. copies worldwide. Mariah dominated the 1990's!

but something new, madonnas new song hung up explodes on pop radio with almost 15 mio. impressions! That#s amazing, the song will definately debut on the us hot 100 next week.. somewehre around no. #70 i think!

'Hung Up' is already #3 on ITunes USA. :o

'Hung Up' should debut in the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100, or maybe even the Top 30, next week.

But then after 2000 the selling rate no doubt falling down...
Like Madonna's selling rate of her full-studio albums after 1992 were fallen too (even Madonna's flopping "Erotica" sold over 5 million, and Mariah's "Glitter" sold merely 2 million, after their 10 years golden time) and kept flopping for over 6 years and had a major came back with 15 million sales of "Ray Of Light", while Mariah's flopping years last for only 4 years and have a come back with 5 million sales of "Emancipation of Mimi" (still selling).
Madonna sold 96 million in first 10 years.
Mariah sold 104 million in first 10 years.
Thing's difference is Madonna had a huge come back to boost her sales...

Oh My God, look how you degraded the ability of Madonna... Madonna always got a "Hot Shot Debut" in Hot 100. Debuting at #70 is an insult to legendary Madonna, don't you know... lol

But American Life debuted at # 90, if I´m not mistaken... Hung Up probably will be higher because of the downloads, but I wonder where it would be in the old chart system...

This weeks Musicweek has a table of sales for each of Madonna's 16 albums which puts her total worldwide album sales to date at 152.5 million with The Immaculate Collection as her biggest seller at 21.5 million. It also puts Like A Virgin, True Blue & Ray Of Light each at 15-17 million & says they're her biggest selling studio albums.
