control definitely sold that much. the only reason why people have trouble believing this is that this album, like most janet's albums are undercertified in the US. US billboard has also reported that control and rn1814 has sold in excess of 14M copies WW. as early as 1996, the janet album has been reported to have sold 16M copies WW. this is exactly the track record of janet that landed her an $80M recording contract with virgin. do you think virgin would have agreed to the contract if janet sold any less?

Where did Christina Aguilera's albums sell that much?

Also, Avril's album actually sold 15M according to her official site.
well there have been countless articles and press releases saying her debut shipped 16 million world wide and it was on her official site before they took it down. The album sold in the US

8.1 soundscan
935,000 BMG club sales
Total: 9,035,000
Sold WW: Estimate 13.5 million shipped 16X
I could easily add another 1 million to it seeing as Columbia sales are not added but they are much bigger than BMG. If wee go by that 935,000 BMG club sales it should easily be over 1,000,000 million columbia club sales. Its not a stretch to say the album should be 10X in the USA just like BOMT is 10.4 million in the US and sold about 1.2 million in BMG club sales so u would get a total of 12 million. However the album is certified 14X so obviously they are adding the other club sales figure that were never released.

But that's exactly how much these albums have sold worldwide. And you should know better that her sales in the U.S are sooo undercertified.

Even if she had sold 10 million in USA only, where would she sell the other 6 million, that album was nowhere a big seller internationally, it barely did 1 million in Europe, and its nearly impossible it would have sold 5 million outside USA and Europe. It wasn´t even a good seller in Japan, so it would need to sell 5 million in smaller markets only...

no problem. i also have no intention of exagerrating her sales. i also want to share with you an article i read. how i wish i saved it or something so i can show you the link. anyway, this was the time when janet was released from her contract with virgin (after 1993's janet) and she was scouting for a new label. of course we all know that virgin re-signed her for the US$80M - the biggest recording contract at that time. but before this happened, a lot of labels were after her and throwing huge sums of money at her. one label NOT joining the bandwagon was Arista. when asked why clive davis (founder of arista) wasn't showing any interest, he replied by saying thst there ws only one room for a diva in arista and that room is occupied by whitney BUT he said that he is also not suprised that record companies were begging for janet since this is a woman whose last 3 albums sold 8 million copies each. How in the world did they sell that much. 'Rhythm Nation 1814' and 'janet' sold over 10M, but not those numbers. Also, I don't think 'Control' sold over 10M.
control definitely sold that much. the only reason why people have trouble believing this is that this album, like most janet's albums are undercertified in the US.
Thanks for clearing out that.
I've done a lot of research on Janet's WW sales and always came across these numbers. I'm not trying to exaggerate her sales to make her look better or anything. But that's exactly how much these albums have sold worldwide. And you should know better that her sales in the U.S are sooo undercertified.
no problem. i also have no intention of exagerrating her sales. i also want to share with you an article i read. how i wish i saved it or something so i can show you the link. anyway, this was the time when janet was released from her contract with virgin (after 1993's janet) and she was scouting for a new label. of course we all know that virgin re-signed her for the US$80M - the biggest recording contract at that time. but before this happened, a lot of labels were after her and throwing huge sums of money at her. one label NOT joining the bandwagon was Arista. when asked why clive davis (founder of arista) wasn't showing any interest, he replied by saying thst there ws only one room for a diva in arista and that room is occupied by whitney BUT he said that he is also not suprised that record companies were begging for janet since this is a woman whose last 3 albums sold 8 million copies each. [/b]
I never read anything about Janet's worldwide sales in Billboard, but only mentioned how she did in US alone.

OK, 8 million through Soundscan, 1 million through BMG, then 1 million through Columbia, that's all said and done, I don't think the US stores would order another million from labels. So total is 10 million in US alone.
600,000-Canada
1 million-Europe (100,000 in UK)
188,000-Korea
70,000-Australia
15,000-NZ
What else??? 2 million for these countries.
Use your brain and a little bit of common sense.

Some of the posts on this thread are for all intents and purposes a joke so I think Nelson was just making light of the situation.

Nelson you are ruining this thread. My Goodness!!! you post shipments but the breakdown of each country is also necessary. For Example in Europe!! Only those that have been certified by IFPI are recognized. How stup[id is that? Justified sold more than 1.8 million copies in UK alone. It's the #3 best selling album in Ireland of 2003. Denmark it's platinum, so as Switzerland.. And other certifications. So what's going to be the outcome? He ended up selling 5 million copies worldwide? My Goodness.

And those stupid sales you have posted. Do you really think that's funny?

about Xtina's sales. I know the real thing.. So i wont post it anymore. Not a big deal if you guyz don't believe it or not.

and saladtossing. 12 million for Stripped is too much!!! It's clearly only 10 million shipments and above 9 million in sales. Just like Dido's Life For Rent.

Like i said the album SHIPPED 16 million WW and sold at most 13.5 million. It wouldnt be wierd that they shipped another 2.5- 3 million more copies to the whole world. Now you are missing many small markets and some of you #'s are outdated. You have to remember that many of the Asian markets were bigger back then an albums sold in general much more than they do now. Just to get UK sales out of the way it sold 158k copies in 2000 and it was posted here in UKmix as a year end chart. It is platinum (300,000) in the UK. I wont even mention Brazil sales because you all are in disagreement on what to believe when it comes from Brazil.

Argentina: -Gold (Gold Req.: 20,000)
Venezuela: -Gold (Gold Req.: 10,000)
Mexico: -Platinum (Platinum Req.: 150,000)
Chile: - Platinum (Platinum Req.: 20,000)

Taiwan: -Triple Platinum (Platinum Req.: 30,000) Total: 90,000
South Africa: -Triple Platinum (Platinum Req.: 50,000) Total: 150,000
Canada: -7x Platinum (Platinum Req.: 100,000) Total: 700,000
Australia: -Triple Platinum (Platinum Req.:70,000) Total: 210,000

Malaysia: -Gold (Gold Req.: 15,000)
Indonesia: -Gold (Gold Req.: 25,000)
Japan: -Platinum (Platinum Req.: 200,000)
Mexico: -Platinum (Platinum Req.: 150,000)
Chile: - Platinum (Platinum Req.: 20,000)
Hong Kong: -Platinum (Platinum Req.: 20,000)
Philippines: -Double Platinum (Platinum Req.: 30,000) Total: 60,000

As you can see besides the 10 million from US and about 1.3 million from Europe it sold about 2.0 million in the rest of the world.

i read that it was an advertisement reporting sales of janet and not an article in billboards mag. anyway, there is also a frech publication called actustar that reported the worldwide sales of control, RN, and janet. i'll post the link:

http://66.218.71.231/language/translati ... -tab-web-t

it's originally in french but what i posted is the english translation thru yahoo. here's a snippet of the article:

It is into 1986 that success arrives. She sells 14 million specimens of her Control album throughout the world. In 1989, its fourth album, Rhythm Nation 1814, in which it evokes racism, the problems of the street and the social difficulties, is also sold him to 14 million specimens and propels it to the row of star international. Five individual resulting from this album is classified number one in the United States. This album is followed of an international round.

In 1993, it returns with a sexier image, and a new album, Janet. Sold to 15 million specimens
