When Mickey Mouse was fifty, in 1978, Walt Disney pictures issued a Super 8mm film called ‘Mickey Mouse: The First Fifty Years’. This thread is meant to be in a similar vein and describes the first fifty years of the UK Album charts.

Launched on 28 July 1956 by Record Mirror Magazine (underneath their own UK Singles Top 20 and their Top 10 of UK Artists) the chart was only a top 5 and the number 1 would only have sold a few hundred copies – for the entire year of 1956 album sales where only 12.12 million (BHS&A, 19). With an occasional blip album sales have increased to 231 million in 2005.

To 17 June 2006 their have been 783 Number 1 albums (17 on the Record Mirror Top 5 between 1956 and November 1 1958 when the chart was expanded to a Top 10 and Melody Maker was used as the source.) I anticipate that by July 28 2006 we will have reached 789.

I’m going to post up to the chart for 28 July 2006 and I will definitely post the Official Charts, though more may be printed if you’re nice to me (by which I mean if people start abusing this thread then I won’t post more than the bare minimum).

I’ve said for a while that I’d eventually post the full UK Album Charts and I’ve been reluctant to do that for several reasons. Firstly, for a long time the database was incomplete. This is now rectified and I believe that, with the exception of a single position from 1981, I have the full set – or as near a full set as I’m likely to get.

The major reason though is that the 50th anniversary seems the best time to start – it gives a more definite start and stop point for the charts than any other date would.

I would ask that people help correct this data if they spot any errors – with nearly 2 million records in the database there are DEFINITELY errors. Anybody spotting an error, however minor, gets a brownie point :-) Even if it isn’t an error, do let me know so I can check it out.

I have some photocopies of the original charts and more are likely to be turning up in the next few days (from the 60’s) so some errors will be spotted and corrected then (before I post those charts hopefully).

I will post these steadily and carefully – so there won’t be too much information in a single day. My plan is to post something every time I’m on the net (which is usually Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday) with the aim of finishing 50 years worth of data by December. It could be that I end up having a very busy Christmas week….

CHART CHRONOLOGY (taken from ‘Complete British Charts’)

NOTE: if any part of this database differs from the chronology below then an explanation will be provided (if I remember – if not let me know and I’ll post one!)

26 July 1956 – First Chart (Top 5) in Record Mirror
8 Nov 1958 – Top 10 (Melody Maker) – chart dated seven days before, but published on WE 8 Nov.
27 Jun 1959 – no charts till 8 Aug 59 because of Newspaper strike. 20 Jun 59 chart repeated.
12 Mar 1960 – Record Retailer / Music Week chart used. Still Top 10
26 Mar 1960 – Top 20
16 Apr 66 – Top 30
10 Dec 66 – Top 40
15 Feb 69 – Top 15
Charts from 1969 taken from a mixture of RR and RM to create the largest chart possible. RM published a Top 15-40 and this has been used if it can be correctly worked out. RR also published a ‘Next 15’ in chart order but without numbers. If I list a chart that’s a 30 it will have come from these sources.
8 Mar 69 – Top 30 printed, including budget albums.
14 Jun 69 – Top 20
28 Jun 69 – Top 40
9 Aug 69 – Top 52 (this week only)
11 Oct 69 – Top 25
8 Nov 69 to 9 Jan 71 – Chart fluctuates between 20 and 77 (47-77 for 1970, 20-24 for 69)
16 Jan 71 – Top 50
6 Feb 71 for 6 weeks – no albums published due to second newspaper strike.
7 Aug 71 – Full price and Budget charts combined.
13 Jan 73 – Chart Top 24 this week only. (No reason given)
5 Jan 74 – Top 42 (this week)
5 Jul 75 – Top 60 (Top 50 and next 10 for a year and a half)
14 Jan 78 – Top 30 (this week only)
2 Dec 78 – Top 75
13 Oct 79 – two charts published. The album charts have always been a week behind the singles. So Singles for 20 Oct 79 where for the sales period 7-13 Oct, while albums where for 1-6 Oct, but dated 20 Oct. On 13 Oct 79 they caught up (due to computer systems) and two charts produced. The earlier is dated 12 Oct 79 by the database to avoid problems.
8 Aug 81 – Top 100
14 Jan 89 – Top 75 (and Top 20 compilations) *
12 Sep 92 – Top 100
28 Nov 92 (Top 150 this week only)
12 Feb 94 – Top 150 (this week only)
19 Nov 94 – Top 150
10 Dec 94 and 4 Mar 95 – incorrect charts published (correct partial chart used – Hit Music was the source and the charts where Top 150 but Hit Music never published a corrected chart).
16 Nov 96 – Top 200 (remains as such today)

(From * official charts only Top 75)

In 1952 NME published the first singles chart. These are the records that were LP’s (or Albums) to make the Singles Top 30 before 1959.

CAROUSEL (LP) (By Original Soundtrack) Capitol (SW 694)
Date: 16/06/1956 - : 27-->1
Date: 07/07/1956 - : 26-->1

SONGS FOR SWINGIN' LOVERS (LP) (By Frank Sinatra) Capitol (LCT 6106)
Date: 16/06/1956 - : 26-16-13-12-16-15-22-26-->8

ROCK 'N' ROLL STAGE SHOW (LP) (By Bill Haley and his Comets) Brunswick (LAT 8139)
Date: 10/11/1956 - : 30-->1

LONNIE DONEGAN SHOWCASE (LP) (By Lonnie Donegan and his Skiffle Group) Pye Nixa (NPT 19012)
Date: 22/12/1956 - : 28-29-26-->3

COME AND DANCE WITH ME (LP) (By Frank Sinatra)
Date: 16/05/1959 - : 30-->1

Lonnie Donegan’s album was the biggest seller, selling more copies than there were players that could play it.

I’d like to thank Alan Smith, Hanboo, PTerry, Polyhex, ChartWatch and Zobbel for their help in getting me the original charts.

First post tomorrow afternoon.

Lonnie Donegan’s album was the biggest seller, selling more copies than there were players that could play it.
Maybe some of the people who bought it did not have the right record player on which to play it - and thus broke their copy of the record when they tried to play it (and probably ended up buying another copy!).

Very probably. My understanding is that it was a 12" and the players where 10", though, being only 21, I wasn't there so can't be certain. Dad seemed to think so though but, being 6 at the time he can be forgiven if he got it wrong. :D

Thanks Lonnie ...been waiting for this thread for ages !

On www.theofficialcharts.com it states that the following albums tied for #1

17 Nov 56
ELVIS - ROCK N ROLL
OST - KING & I

4 MAY 57
FRANK SINATRA - THIS IS SINATRA
OST - KING & I

It also states OST - THE DUKE WORE JEANS appeared at #1 for only 2 wks

A possible mistake on whose part ?

No it doesn't. It says,

16 Feb 57
OST - King & I tied with OST - High Society

Again you've mis-read, it says

8 Jun 57
OST - King & I tied with Nat 'King' Cole - Love Is The Thing.

Neither of the above tied positions are shown in BHSA vol.17.
This still doesn't answer your question.

So can anyone confirm which is right?

Me. There's a * by the dates on above posts and that means that I have a scan for the full chart for that data. So I am right (if we assume that the magazine got it right :-) )

Any chart with a * by the date is one for which I have a scan and, as such, the positions are correct.

Sorry, the dates Boro mentioned have stars. Your correct, those that you listed don't have *. I've saved the page and will see what BHS&A19 has to say. Although I will keep my DB as is until I see an actual copy of the charts - I don't wnat to correct an error and make an even bigger one.

ok a couple of questions aout Elvis

in the US Elvis first 2 albums were Elvis presley with the famous green & pink logo and Elvis with a profile cover in the Uk his first 2 albums were Rock n Roll & Rock n Roll no. 2.

these 4 albums all covered the same tracks but spread in a different order over the two discs

now i've read that Rock N Roll is mainly Elvis(2nd US) and Rock N Roll 2 is mainly Elvis presley(1st US)
is this correct or should we view these albums has been so different that there different albums complelty

which covers were used for which?

to confuse matters further Elvis(us 2nd) is issued in the UK in 1959 should this be seen as a re-issue with different title? and then RnR 2 is re-issued in 62

can anybody shed any light on how these releaese relate to each other

many thanks

Chart Note! There ARE! two extra Joint No1 positions on the Record Mirror LP charts! When Keith Badman was helping me out in the very first log of the chart he found them! Also Neil Warwick and John Kutner found them in their research on the chart! (Spoke to Neil and John about it-they told me `Guinness` were hopeless in missing the Three tied No1's)Myself-last year when I was logging the number of shops returning Top Ten's to Record Mirror (They printed them till March 1961) I made sure that I checked those particular `tied` positions! The other two Joint No1 places are
16 February 1957 "The King & I" (Soundtrack) and "High Society" (Soundtrack)

and 19 April 1958 "Pal Joey" (Frank Sinatra/Soundtrack) and "The Duke Wore Jeans" (Tommy Steele)

I have given an Interview to the `Guardian` newspaper over mine and Keith's discovery of this chart! Hopefully, it will be in their `Saturday` supplement-either 24th June or 1st July!

With thanks to Alan Smith, I have the entire years charts as scans (so no * after the dates)
