I don't think the recordings from that time ever made the charts in Germany or anywhere else. It was just a local success in Hamburg.

The first chart success in Germany was with the MOTOWN-cover "Twist & Shout" in 1963 going Top 10. In 1964, they recorded two songs in german: "Komm gib mir deine Hand" (I Wanna Hold Your Hand) and "Sie liebt dich" (She loves you), which both made the Top 10, "Komm gib mir deine Hand" even made Number One.

Later other recordings where released like "Roll Over Beethoven" (#31), "My Bonnie" (with Tony Sheridan) (#50) and others cover-songs they recorded in the early sixties.
"My Bonnie" already charted in Germany in 1961. Polydor claimed in 1970 that they sold over 1 million copies of that single globally.

Check out the Beatles Sales Thread for UK, US and Australian chart placings for "My Bonnie", "Ain't She Sweet", "Cry For A Shadow" and "Why".

I think they may have missed the fact that "Ain't She Sweet" charted in the UK (#29 in 1964). In Germany, "My Bonnie" charted as follows:

Ersteinstieg
(Jahr/Woche) Max.
Pos. Top10
Wochen Lied Interpret

1961 / 49 32 0 My Bonnie Tony Sheridan & The Beat Brothers
1964 / 18 50 0 My Bonnie Tony Sheridan with The Beatles

I think some other Tony Sheridan tracks like "Skinny Minnie" and "Sweet Georgia Brown" charted here and there, but I don't believe the Beatles played on them.

Another copy-and-paste job by Kriss? You already ruined the Elvis Sales thread with your endless copy-and-paste posts, not this thread, please. And is there something specific you want to tell us? You realize this topic is about worldwide sales, not U.S. sales? (= RIAA certified)

However,

the initial list that kicked off this topic is heavily dependent on certifications - including RIAA - so I'd say that it is pertinent.

On the topic - It appears that RIAA will retrospectively certify older hits.

It was my belief that the BPI will not go back in time an certify old hits.

No the BPI will not, 'go back', & Certify most Singles & Albums, that were Hits before Sales Awards in the UK began, in 1973. Or Albums that only got 1 Platinum Award before Multiple Platiunum Awards were introduced, in 1987.

However, they have done so with some Albums - that carried on Selling for Years after they first came out, & that were even still Selling long after 1987.

They have done it for, 'The Dark Side Of The Moon', by Pink Floyd, 'Rumours' by Fleetwood Mac, 'Bat Out Of Hell', by Meatloaf, & 'Greatest Hits' (One), by Queen. They have probably done it for some other Albums too.

But not most Albums.....

the initial list that kicked off this topic is heavily dependent on certifications - including RIAA - so I'd say that it is pertinent.
Especially pertinent was the listing of all certified Elvis albums.

Wonder what the best selling EP's are across the World, certificated or not?

Bobcatbob, all I can tell you about White Christmas's sales are it became the biggest selling single around the last half of 1945.It was still ranked as the biggest selling single around 1958 and it's sales were around 25 million.I remember reading that White Christmas had sold nearly 3 million copies in America as of early 1943 but I read this from a very old article years ago.RUDOLF,THE RED NOSED REINDEER was considered the second biggest American seller at the end of the 1950s and it's sales were listed at well over 6 million and Elvis' Hound Dog/Don't Be Cruel was next with just over 6 million.

Yes, cass, Bing would appear to have had some big sellers in his career - but his career lasted many, many, many years - The Beatles only had eight and, in terms of the USA charts, 6 years to sell their records!

So The Beatles sales achievements are far better than Bing's alledged sales achievements, because they sold so much in such a short space of time!

Besides, I consider Crosby's figures rather over the top - many music experts have always considered Crosby's figures as exaggerated.

Blackcat,What about The Beatles reaching 100 million American sales one year faster than Elvis and they had about 10 million more possible American buyers than Elvis when they started out?Why would Bing receive an award for becoming the first recording star to sell 200 million records and this was not given to him by his record company? We could say that any act has had their sales inflated by their companies and many have questioned Elvis' and The Beatles sales as well.

Of course, cass, we could argue all day about inflated sales figures - the point I am trying to make is that the Beatles sold millions upon millions based largely on one seven year period, between 1963 and 1970, and this was singles and albums all over the World - the point I keep making is that that is a phenomenal achievement, especially when you consider that they wrote most of their own songs, unlike Elvis or Crosby!!!

Whichever way you look at it, selling that much of your own self-penned material in such a very short space of time is unprecedented, by any artist.

Cass, thanks very much for that. This is very precious information, as there's so little information available about this record's sales !

3 million in the US in early 1943 would have been just after it's first run in the charts. It was #1 in the Billboard Best Sellers in Stores Chart for 11 weeks in late 1942. Apparently it returned to the US charts every Christmas up to 1962, but it never reached #1 again (at least not in the Billboard Best Sellers in Stores charts, there were other charts which factored airplay in).

So how do we get from 3 million US sales in early 1943 to 25 million World sales in 1958 ? Suppose 15 million of the 25 million were US sales. From 1943 to 1958 we have 15 or 16 years, depending on whether the 1958 announcement included Christmas 1958 sales or not. So it would have needed to sell on average about a million each year to achieve this. It would be interesting to see how high it charted each Christmas. You'd think it would have to be fairly high (ie. in the Top 10 some years) if it was selling in these quantities.

Sorry, what I meant to say above was that to sell an additional 12 million in the US over 15 years, "White Christmas" would need to have sold on average about 800,000 each year. Of course, sales could have been much stronger in the first few years and then tapered off.

Does anybody have any (constructive) comments on the plausibility of this scenario, or - even better - Billboard chart positions ?

I have some comments to make on the plausibility of these Bing Crosby sales figures, bobcat, but I don't want to make them now, I think I have upset Cass enough!!!

Alright, cass!!

Only a friendly debate cass, you stick to your Crosby corner, I will stick to my Beatles one!!!

Blackcat,It does'nt bother me if you debate my info and it makes for interesting discussions if you get two different opinions on a certain subject.

The White Christmas single topped the charts three different times and made the top 30 a total of 17 different years. The original was pressed so many times Bing had to record a new copy of it,during 1947.

It does seem to have been a unique phenomenon, and the evidence does suggest it had massive sales in the US, which is why I went for a 15 million US / 10 million Rest-of-the-World split for the 25 million by 1958.

Still, an average of 800,000 per year from 1943 to 1958 is quite a lot ! Be nice to know how high it peaked each of the 17 times it made the Top 30.

If instead we assume a roughly 50/50 split between the US and the Rest-of-the-World, it requires an average of 630,000 per year from 1943 to 1958 in the US.

And it would need to have sold 12.5 million in the Rest-of-the-World. But then you begin to wonder how it could have done that. I didn't think there were large markets in the wider world for pop music records at this time. In the UK and Germany the first million-selling record was "Rock Around The Clock" (although "White Christmas" eventually passed the million mark in the UK as well). So you've got no markets outside the US where it could have sold a million at this time, except maybe Canada.

Cass, I think it only topped the Billboard Best Sellers in Stores chart one time, on it's initial release in 1942. I believe the other 2 occasions you speak of were combined charts which also factored in airplay (in 1945 and 1946 I think).

By the way, I'd like to say that if I dispute the sales claims for a certain artist, it doesn't mean I'm having a dig at their music - just their record company's sales claims !

But according to nelson earlier in this very thread, bobcatbob and cass, White Christmas could not possibly have sold 30 million, because it took too much time just to sell one million, apparently......... :o

Look through the thread, and you will see nelson's posting yourself. whether you can make any sense of them........?

I think the single sold very well around the world but there just were no charts at the time.I have heard some say that White Christmas passed the million mark in the UK many years before it was given official recognition.White Christmas made the century top singles list in a good number of countries around the world from what I was told and many soldiers in America and Europe were reported as listing White Christmas as their favorite song, during World War Two. Maybe the single sold less than reported but I believe this single was reissued after Bing passed on and I know they printed several million of each of Bing's most successful American releases shortly after his passing. No question that it is the biggest selling non charity single ever but maybe not as high as claimed.
