Anybody can advise me on this problem of mine? My computer has lost all sound, and the "playback" areas in the multimedia properties is grayed out. Apparently my driver is "enabled but inactive due to an unknown problem". Strangely, I can still play mp3s on Winamp! What's the deal? I tried uninstalling the driver, but no deal.
This is wrecking havoc on my music enjoyment on the computer...particularly watching streaming music videos like Liberty X's.

When you say Winamp works, do you mean you can hear music playing on it? If that's the case then your computer hasn't lost its sound, it's just certain functions not working.
Which sounds can't you hear, exactly?
If you want to reinstall your sound card drivers then you need to find out the manufacturer of your sound card (e.g. Creative) and the type of card you have (e.g. Audigy 2).
Then go to the manufacturer's official website (which you can usually find by typing its name into www.google.com) and find the drivers section (usually under support or downloads). Download the driver and install it.
Either that or you could just remove your soundcard from the device manager and reboot Windows and let Windows automatically find the best driver. Windows XP is really good at finding drivers automatically.
I know this is obvious, but go to your volume control (look in start menu > accessories > entertainment) and make sure that MIDI isn't muted.
By the way, I recoomend you install Winamp 2.91 (you can download it from the official Winamp site). It's much better than Winamp3.

Yeah, Winamp3 caused me no end of problems, it basically did nothing good. I went back to Winamp 2.81, it may be over a year old, but I'd never change again.
This post is highly unlikely to be serious. Please treat it accordingly. Unless it's music-related, in which case I'm damn well right.

Yeah me too, I deleted Winamp3.
And I only downloaded it so that I can hear Shane's show!

I think the deal is that Nullsoft merged with AOL (or someone) so AOL own Winamp and they made it all slow and bulky and buggy. But Nullsoft wanted to keep releasing their own version, so they're continually updating version 2, which everyone knows is a better version.
The only minor drawback of version 2 is that it's not as easy to turn crossfading on and off (you have to do it from the options). But it's way more stable.
Admittedly, Winamp3 does have a much prettier skin, but you can get the skin for verison 2.
