Dangerous didn't sold 30 million copies.

These are your numbers:

USA : 8.000.000
Canada : 800.000
Brésil : 500.000
Mexique : 400.000
Argentine : 200.000
(9.900.000)

Japon : 900.000
Chine : 450.000
Corée Du Sud : 800.000
Singapour : 200.000
(2.350.000)

Australie : 630.000
Nouvelle-Zélande : 85.000
(715.000)

Europe : 11.980.000
- UK : 2.350.000
- France : 2.500.000
- Allemagne : 2.350.000
- Espagne : 650.000
- Italie : 810.000
- Pays-Bas : 375.000
- Suède : 400.000
- Finlande : 61.500
- Autriche : 215.000
- Suisse : 270.000
- Danemark : 165.000
- Norvège : 150.000+
- Turquie : 400.000
- Israel : 100.000
(10.796.500)

total: 23.761.500 (25 countries)

Considering your number - 11.980.000 - for Europe the total is less than 25 million copies.

Where it sold 5 million copies ?
North America 9m
Latin America 1.5m
Asia 4m
Oceania 0.7m
Europe/Med 13m (inc Turkey/Israel)

total 28.2m

Then there's Africa, the Middle East etc. 30m may seem plausible on MJ Dangerous's estimates

However, how reliable are some of the figures eg China, Turkey, South Korea? Generally, it's not easy to come by sales figures for these countries. Are the French figures a little high? Don't forget this album wouldn't have great catalogue sales.

You can't based on UK to guess sales in HK. MIH was already 6x in Italy while only G or P in HK. Or you should put every country with 6x like Italy?
I talk about UK just to give an example and explain how an album may ship a certain amount of copies upon release and pick up much stronger sales after that. I´m not saying that both markets are similar or anything like that.

And yes, the fact that it was certified 6 times platinum in Italy doesn´t mean anything about other countries (as the album was particlularly strong over there), but Freddie Mercury´s death hugely increased the sales of that album (because it had been released one month earlier) in most markets. That´s the reason why I expect its sales from that country to be stronger.

Just as a reminder, I didn´t say it sold over 100k, just claimed that I expect it to be between 50k and 100k by now. Obviously, I could be wrong. I´m guessing, but at least admit that guessing is what you are also doing. We haven´t provided an updated figure for it.

Well, both figures from Turkey and Korea are from neutral sources. None figure have been revealed in China, what we know is that Bad sold (shipped) 250K "in a few weeks" of release, and that Dangerous ended "selling more" than Bad. Those affirmations were printed into a Jackson fan (his Chinese site), but the figure was according to them from the guy who check sales in Asia, the same guy interviewed by Billboard and said to them that "none foreign album sold half a million" in China, "even blockbusters of Michael Jackson" (that was until Titanic sold a million). I guessed that both (Dangerous & Bad) were probably close to that mark without reaching it (even if it was 10 years ago now). That's why I have put figures at 450k, it looks to me like the best corralation of the info we have.

In France, we know that :
- It shipped 400k when release and was at #2 all month of December 91 (behind french superstar Bruel)
- In 92, it climbed to #1 were it stayed for 11 weeks.
- It was always top 5 during the Christmas sales of 92.
- It never dropped from the top 10 during the full year of 92 (still the only album in history to achieve a full calendar year in the top 10).
- It stayed in the top 3/top 5 until March 93 and registered 73 weeks in the top 10, the all time record since the beginning of French official album chart.

It went diamond during the year of 92, we haven't a precise date of it. At least in charts, it performed as well as "Alors Regarde" which sold 3 million copies here.

Thankyou for your reply, MJ Dangerous. But what are the 'neutral' sources from Turkey and South Korea?

The figure for China is as you say your guess based on what is really hearsay. Would you be so willing to believe sales of another artist or album on such a basis? Lots of claims are made even in Billboard that don't stand up.

You are on better ground with the French sales. certainly its chart performance is very impressive. But does that necessarily mean sales of over two and a quarter million?

Incidently, how has Abba Gold done in France. It was certified as a million seller way back in 1994. It is a strong catalogue seller. I know you have estimated sales of 1.4m ( well before the film Mamma Mia was released).

I have a formula for estimating world sales based on the 'G8' of the music world - US, Canada, Uk, France, Germany, Australia, Brazil and Japan. Here how it works.

North America - obviously simply add US + Canada

W Europe - France + Germany X2 + UK (this avoids bias for British artists who do disproprtinately better in the Uk than elsewhere in Europe). Sales in Germany are roughly equal to other 'Germanic' countries eg in Scandinavia, Holland, Austria, Switzerland. Sales in France roughly equal to sales in the other 'Latin' countries combined eg Spain, Portugal, Italy. Belguim is a bit of both!

FAR EAST
Japan x3 for sales in 'Oriental' Asia.

AUSTRALIA

LATIN AMERICA
Brazil x3 for Latin American sales

Multiply by 1.1 for the rest of the world.

Example: Queen's Greatest Hits

North America - 11.5m
W Europe - 10.5m
Asia - 1.8m
Aussie -1.2m
Latin A -1m
26m

Then x by 1.1 for the rest of the world eg Eastern Europe, Middle East, Africa.

Total 28.6m. Not bad, eh?

If you are compiling a CHART then you have to compare like with like and this does that. It's a good enough system for me!

Below you will find the first (tentatively) official ALL TIME BEST SELLING ALBUM WORLDWIDE CHART, who collect all the albums who have climbed the 15 millions copies sold level. This chart is NOT DEFINITIVE (obviously future album will come in, but even past albums have to be added or corrected yet). Now i want to extend this chart to the albums who reached at least the 10 millions copies sold level and YOU could help me fill the holes with suggestions, additions and corrections. All you have to do is follow TWO simple rules

1) Any addition or correction must come DIRECTLY from official site of an ARTIST, a LABEL or an ORGANIZATION (like RIAA or IFPI associates) IN THIS ORDER. In case of challenging figures, in fact, i will first consider ARTIST FIGURES (that i have to recognize as the most reliable figures), then LABEL and at last ORGANIZATIONS.
P.s. If you wants to know WHY i've made this choice read this topic made by EDU.

2)Post a reply to this post with your addition/correction ALONGSIDE a linkable URL of the site with the official infos, and then i will add your suggestion in the official chart. (As you can notice latest addiction and updated figures reported a linkable URL where you can find the infos supplied)

That's all folks!

If you are interested, here's
THE STORY SO FAR...

In the past months i've searched the web (official site of majors, artists, fans and organizations) trying to put together a nearly impossible ALL TIME BEST SELLING ALBUM WORLDWIDE CHART

This is the first result but, as you can easily imagine, is all but DEFINITIVE (and barely OFFICIAL).

Everywone can add any suggestions/corrections/additions (as OFFICIAL as possible ...)

One year ago i've received a list posted by RIAA and (supposed) compiled by IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry)... This list have confirmed most of the figures sales i'd found by myself in the past. So now i've updated these figures as today. (IFPI figures are indicated when available)
BTW it's now confirmed that the figures inside this list are only estimated and not directly compiled by IFPI (as hanboo has explained) ;-)
Legenda:
1) (2CD) = double cd but counted as one (and not x2 as RIAA figures)
2) (2LP) = double vinyl album remastered inside one single cd

(1). The source for SK was Popspops who posted the top 5 best selling albums ever in SK according to their official organisations. The figure of Turkey was from an article posted first on a charts website (previously known because it was the first posting all Canadian Diamond albums). It is offline since 1 or 2 years, the article was posted latter on UKmix as well.

(2) Yes I would count it for another artist, especially if figures make sense considering sales of the albums in other Asian countries. Bad/Dangerous are huge all over Asia and those figures are realistic, just like Bodyguard probably sold anywhere from 200k to 500k in China.

(3) Its sales in France could be less just like they could be more. An album like "Ocarina", was released at the same time of Dangerous, hasn't got big debut sales, managed way less weeks at #1 and #2 still managed to get a Diamond award several months before to drop out of the top 10, selling around 1,5 million copies. They are many examples of 91/92 albums going Diamond in France with a run nowhere near to the one of Dangerous (like On Every Street). The estimate isn't in the high side for that one.

(4) Sadly, until IFOP started to publish Compilation charts in 1996, those charts are unknown. Gold, like many other best ofs, were charted in that chart (except some periods when they mixed all, which is why Gold debuted in September 93 in the full chart).

Madonna's sales figure have not been updated for several years now. Those numbers are the same as when long time ago her site was called madonnamusic.com. The most recent numbers that have appeared are 24 Million for True Blue (Warner Music Italy) and 30 Million for TIC. For the rest of the albums there are no updated figures

Source of the 30m figure for TIC ?

Shayonce Popspops posted that top 5 :

1. Whitney Houston "Bodyguard" 1.1million
2. Mariah Carey "Musicbox" 1million
3. Ace of base "Happy Nation" almost 1millon
4. Michael Jackson "Dangerous" over 800k
5. Mariah Carey "Daydream" over 700k

the link is here.

On it, we have one of the 2 quote of Denekamp (=Sony Music Asia president) about Jackson in China : Sony Music artist Michael Jackson is one Western performer who has previously sold well in the People's Republic, says Denekamp, "although I've never seen an official number above 500,000 units."

FAR EAST
Japan x3 for sales in 'Oriental' Asia.

AUSTRALIA

LATIN AMERICA
Brazil x3 for Latin American sales

Multiply by 1.1 for the rest of the world.

Example: Queen's Greatest Hits

North America - 11.5m
W Europe - 10.5m
Asia - 1.8m
Aussie -1.2m
Latin A -1m
26m
My estimations for Queen´s "Greatest hits 1" are like this:

USA: 9,800,000
Canada: 1,500,000
Australia: 1,200,000
New Zealand: 190,000+
Europe: 12,700,000
Latin America: 1,700,000 (including roughly 700,000 in Argentina alone)
Japan: 600,000
South Africa: 100,000+

The problem is the rest of Asia, the rest of Africa, Middle East. :(

Their "Greatest hits 1" sold about 600-700k combining Korea, Honk Kong and Singapore, which represnet altogether as much as a 30% of the total sales in Asia (outside Japan). So maybe in that region around 2,000,000 or more.

In the same way, I assume at least 500,000 for Africa and Middle East.

That gives me 30,200,000+ worldwide. Much more than you, and MJDangerous too.

By the end of 2002, it had officially sold over 25 millions copies worldwide, and has managed to sell well over millions since. So my estimation makes sense based on claims too.

It would be interesting to note that sales figures provided by Shayonce aren´t in conflict with the ones posted by MJDangerous, so I don´t see the problem really.
