Melody Maker 1960's (and 50's) singles charts

Hiya and thanks to all u who posted this thread, Only really starting to go thru these now and it's great stuff. I've started with the 1969 charts and as I'm going along I just wanna point out a couple of stray re-entries for 1969 (that you may have already noticed)so you can amend your databases.
Harry J's The Liquidator is also listed as by Henry J.
Reggae In Your Jeggae is listed as by Dandy and Dondy. I never heard of this but apparently Dandy is correct.
And the Tony Joe White record is listed as a new entry twice, tho I have no idea why your database would've picked this up as a separate entry because everything seems to be spelled the same. Cheers for all this info :-)

I would think unlikely - I do not think either Boro or myself have the complete set. I know i have some from 71-75 to add into the database (time and other charts got in the way!) but I don;t ave all the 70's charts. If somebody does, then do please post! (But after the 50's have been finished please - some sort of order must be maintained!)

I notice an earlier reference to the Beau Brummels - and the suggestion it should be "Laugh, Laugh", which was indeed a US hit early in 1965. However, the fact is the listing of the song title "I Know, Know, Know" is correct, but instead of it being the Beau Brummels, it is actually Beau Brummel Esquire. It's quite a rare single, but apparently sold enough to creep into the MM chart in 1965, on the Columbia label - so I recommend the correction should be Beau Brummel Esquire with "I Know, Know. Know" - which I used to have (but only have a recording now).

The record in question is indeed "I Know Know Know" by Beau Brummel Esquire & his Noble Men (Columbia DB7447). The American Beau Brummels "Laugh Laugh" was released in this country some 3-4 weeks after the chart entry occurred, so couldn't have possibly been the one.

Thanks for correcting that. From the beginning I was doubtful about the Beau Brummels recording.
If I had found the Beau Brummel Esquire's record in my Rare Record Price Guide I would have never mentioned Beau Brummels "Laugh, Laugh" record. In the Price Guide (my copy dates from 1992) The Beau Brummels are listed under BEAU Brummels while the Beau Brummel Esq. appear pages later under Beau BRUMMEL Esq. Sorry for causing the confusion.

Regarding the Melody Maker POP 50 from July /August 1965 I am astonished to see the Righteous Brothers
"Hung On You" listed throughout instead of "Unchained Melody" which all the other important music papers (NME/DISC/RR) charted.

Regarding the earlier comment about being astonished at the listing of "Hung On You" by the Righteous Brothers, I can give the following clarification, having checked this in the Melody Maker copies held at Colindale. MM on 31Jul65 listed "Hung On You" at no.50 as new entry. However, the next week (7Aug65), it listed the Righteous Bros' "Unchained Melody" ONLY, at no.45, but in the "last week" column said it had been at no.50. Technically, the MM should have listed "Hung On You" as a new entry at no.50 on 31Jul65 (which it did), but then on 7Aug65 it should have listed "Unchained Melody" at no.45 as a New Entry (instead of saying it was no.50 the prev wk). All entries from 7Aug65 to end of chart run on 16Oct65 only listed "Unchained Melody".
Hope that helps anyone to correct their listings.
You may also wish to know that in "Music Echo" paper, "Hung On You" was also listed, again at no.50 and for 1 week only, on 7Aug65. It didnt get listed in RM or NME or DISC !!

Andrew Ruffhead writes (to the public-spirited compiler of the Melody Maker 1960s charts):
When you get round to amending St Louis' "Grave" to St Louis Union's "Girl" and "Hung On You" to "Unchained Melody", you might like to correct "The War Is Lord" to "War Lord" (Shadows single from 1965-66).
Any chance of showing the early 1970 Melody Maker charts so we can see how high the late 1960s hits actually reached?
