BUT they deserve it, love U2!
But they weren't the biggest concert draw last year :P

That's just because of how the dates fell - U2 on one tour will gross four times Bon Jovi's total gross :)

Simple as, end of.

http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/industry/record-labels/u2-talk-new-album-huge-south-african-concert-1005032732.story:
U2 open the next leg of their massive 360° Tour this Sunday, Feb, 13, with what may be the biggest audience of the band's 30-year career.

The band's manager Paul McGuinness of Dublin-based Principal Management said Friday that with the release of a few more hundred seats at FNB Stadium in Soweto, the first U2 South African show since PopMart landed here in 1998, looks set to break through the 100,000 mark. This would end the band's biggest attendance record to date when 95,600 people filled Pasadena's Rose Bowl in Oct. 2009. It would also match the 100,000 people former South African President Nelson Mandela drew to the stadium on February 13th in 1990 for his first public appearance in Johannesburg after his release from 27 years in prison by the apartheid regime.

That's because they have massive media support, critics love them and they tour less than Bon Jovi.

U2 360° Tour (2009-2011) will gross MORE than Lost Highway, The Circle, Bon Jovi Live 2011 (2008 – 2011) COMBINED.

U2 360° Tour in Europe (2009-2010) grossed MORE than Have A Nice Day Tour and the Lost Highway Tour in Europe (2006 – 2008) COMBINED.

Since 2005, U2 played stadiums in Europe 3x (2005, 2009, 2010 and maybe 2011), Bon Jovi also 3x (2006, 2008, 2011) – Bon Jovi does NOT tour Europe more than U2.

Since 2005, U2 played MASSIVE Stadium shows in Latin America 2x (2006, 2011), Bon Jovi played stadiums ONCE (2010) - Bon Jovi does NOT tour Latin America more than U2.

Since 2005, U2 played MASSIVE stadium shows in Australia/NZ 2x (2006, 2010), Bon Jovi 3 ARENA shows and 2 SMALL stadium shows in 2008 and stadiums in 2010 - Bon Jovi does NOT tour Australia/NZ more than U2.

The only market where Bon Jovi tours frequently is the US, but that’s on an arena level anyway.

There is absolutely NO DOUBT about the fact that Bon Jovi is NOT as successful as U2, Madonna and The Rolling Stones.

I think that we are at the point where u2 360 will gross 750 million ($443+Australia+South Africa+South America+N.A)

If they add another leg or two, i.e. the strongly rumored mini-Euro leg of 10 dates & the lightly rumored Asian dates, they would be a lock for $800 million and I think closer to $850 million.

When the tour initially launched, reports were that U2 would gross $600-650 million
Then estimates went to $700 once the numbers/demand started coming in. Then estimates went to $750 million once Australia, South America & additional N.A dates were confirmed. Now it looks like $800-850 million is where they COULD end out. If they decide to play a full euro leg (i.e. 20 dates instead of 10), the gross could actually hit close to $900 million!! The demand is there, especially if they release another album.

I remember someone stating that U2 were not in the same league as the Stones or Pink Floyd when it came to touring. This person stated that if Pink Floyd toured today (they are not an active band of course but IF), they would gross $775 million. Well, U2 could very well blow even that number away! I want to say that the $775 figure is somewhere in the 34 or so pages of this thread.

Like I've said before, around $775 million...and with NO openers. Not far-fetched at all, considering that it looks like Roger Waters will be grossing a couple hundred million dollars from the 106 shows scheduled on his 2010-2011 The Wall Live tour...
Here is that $775 million number I was talking about. Keep in mind that the $775 is pure estimate and guess work at best.

With regard to openers, I always go back to the fact that the overwhelming majority of tickets to U2 shows are sold well in ADVANCE of any announcement of opening acts (see 2 NY shows, 2 Boston shows, 2 Chicago Shows, 2 Toronto shows & Rose Bowl which all sold out before opening acts were announced). Outside of the N.A, hell, U2 could have Barney open up for them and they would still sell tickets in Greece, Spain(, Italy, Germany, France, England, Ireland, etc....).

Something interesting I noticed about Bon Jovi is that in the UNITED STATES, they have only played stadiums ina few cities over their career. These are Chicago, Detroit, Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. You could throw in Hershey and Churchhill Downs in Kentucky, but those are smaller stadiums.

Bon Jovi has never done stadium shows in Washington DC, Florida, California, Washington Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, and Indiana. U2 has played Stadiums, often multiple times in all of these states since 1987.

Its obvious Bon Jovi can't even come close to numbers like the following that U2 put up in Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina:

September 29, 2009

Fedex Field

Just discovered that the "Black Eyed Peas" are booked and have apparently filled up 3 stadium shows at the big Stade De France in Paris for June of this year. The last time they were in France they played some arena shows, but there was nothing that suggested they were ready to fill or sellout one of the worlds biggest stadiums in Paris not just once, but three times.

Of course, they have the stadium configured in the standard 270 set up, so max capacity is 80,000 for the show. Field tickets are 50 Euro, seating is 89, 78, and 67 Euro. At current exchange rates that suggest an average ticket price of $100 dollars which is similar to U2.

I saw they did some stadiums in Central and South America on the last tour, but this really took me by surprise. So far these are the only shows they have booked for this year at this time.

I think the 3rd show is not so far from being sold out and advertising is just starting. So no worries about that.

they are the 2nd act I think to play 3 gigs in a row after johnny hallyday

very surprising ...

Those BEP tickets are cheap, but to sell three consecutive shows at the Stade is no mean achievement. I'll believe it when I see it though

I don't know what is cheap for you but for me 50 to 90 EUR is quite expensive (65 USD to 120 USD)
I doubt they have any scenic infrastructure that justify the price of these tickets like U2

To get back to topic: 98,000 or 100,000 (some differing media reports) people in attendance in Johannesburg. Does anyone have an idea of what this concert might have grossed?

I guess we'll see South African and South American boxscores in July when Pollstar publish their Mid Year rankings. I wonder if we'll ever see individual Australian/NZ boxscores, since apparently it was too early for Live Nation to report them to Pollstar for the 2010 year end rankings in December. I'm sure Pollstar won't inlcude them in this year's Mid Year or Year End rankings. But they will be included in Billboards Year End Top Tour rankings, so I guess we will at least be able to calculate the totals of the Ausralian/NZ Leg.

If we won't get any individual boxscores at all, we will still be able to at least get to the totals of each leg by subtraction. We can rely on the tour being included in:
Pollstar Mid Year Top Worldwide Tours (South Africa + South America)
Pollstar Year End Top Worldwide Tours (all 2011)
Pollstar Year End Top North American Tours (North American Leg)
Billboard Year End Top Worldwide Tours (Australia/NZ + all 2011)
Billboard Year End Top North American Tours (North American Leg)

Attendance is a little lower than predicted. I heard estimates of up to 110,000. U2's Rose Bowl show is still out in front on this tour. Great to see their putting up the individual boxscores quickly again.
