It's the middle of the month again...

However, all previous years from 1975 to 2009 have now been fully covered in annual charts (a complete index can be found in the first post of this thread) and there are still far too many tracks from 2010 and 2011 in the current chart to enable me to finalise top 100s of those years for quite some time yet.

So, having already posted a chart combining the years 1970-1974 (because there weren't enough tracks to do them individually), I thought it might be interesting to combine the charts of further five-year periods. Initially, I intended to continue these in sequence - but, as there have been quite a few 1970s features recently, instead of beginning with 1975-1979 I decided it would be better to approach them in a more randomly-chosen (!) order.

In the most recent chart commentary, I wrote:.....she’s not the first Dane to reach the summit - Brigitte Nielsen was there in the early 1990’s with “How Could You Let Me Go”
And there's the first segment of time to be covered now - a period of transition for me, as I've previously mentioned here. At the beginning of 1990, I was twenty-five, and working almost round the clock to secure the last promotion I would ever obfain at work. By the end of 1994, I was thirty, and happily settled into early retirement, working only for about one day a week - and that has continued ever since. My monthly charts also underwent a (less significant) transition - formerly a top fifty, they switched to the format still adopted now, the top forty plus top forty breakers. This perhaps means that the first half of this five-year period had a slight advantage over the latter half - or maybe the earlier music tended to be better than the later stuff - as this six-hour top 100 package comprises 28 from 1990, 25 from 1991, 21 from 1992, and 13 each from 1993 and 1994.

Four tracks aren't available on YouTube, unfortunately - so other hit versions of the same songs by Baccara, Bad Manners and Nilsson have to stand in for Raffaella at 74, Jive Bunny and the MasterMixers at 62, and Ava at 9. There doesn't seem to be any other version of the Tol and Tol track at number 24, however - so instead I've substituted one of the same title, by Ultravox! Thirty-eight hits from this period reached number one - one of them, not until 2007 - and they have all made it into this top hundred of the early 1990s, although several are at the bottom end. And, right at the top, it's a record that wasn't ever a monthly number one, but spent four months as my number two..... Here, then, is the full countdown of my favourites from 18-22 years ago!

During the first five years of this century, there was a period of seven consecutive months in which my number one changed - but in which “You” by Noemi climbed to the top twice. Now, however, there has been an entirely new number one seven times in a row - as Lady GaGa, David Guetta featuring Sia, David Guetta featuring Usher, Avicii, Lana Del Rey and Agnes Obel are followed by.....Sandro Silva and Quintino! Among nine climbers this month, the former Chartbuster “Epic” races up thirteen places from its number 14 debut in February to become my 192nd chart-topper. While its popularity has not yet spread much further, it has been in the Dutch top ten for the last nine weeks - but the song climbing three places to my runner-up position has now been there for three times as long. Gotye and Kimbra’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” has beaten the 26 weeks record set in 1965 by Trio Hellenique and “La Danse De Zorba” - and could still have a chance of overtaking that to become the most successful chart hit of all time in the Netherlands. It has also achieved two non-consecutive weeks at number one in the UK charts - another fairly rare feat - while one of the biggest-selling albums here this month has been Lana Del Rey’s “Born To Die”. The title track is the highest of four new entries, crashing straight in at number five - while just above it are the only two non-movers this time, “Video Games” and “Blue Jeans”. The only other performer to have made three simultaneous appearances in my top five prior to the New Yorker formerly known as Lizzy Grant was Regi Penxten - and he only managed in three different collaborations, with Bart Peeters, choirgirls Scala and as part of Milk Inc.! The other three new entries this time are all at the bottom end of the top forty. Londoners Joe Goddard and Valentina have a number 38 debut with “Gabriel”, while Martin Solveig and Robyn both double their tally of current hits, with “Big In Japan” at 36 and “Love Kills” at 40 respectively. Their other top forty entries, “Ready 2 Go” and “Call Your Girlfriend”, are among twenty-five moving down this month - which also include the longest laster, “Chasing Dreams” by Sebastian Cruz and Miryel at 35, and the fastest faller, “Drowning” by Armin Van Buuren featuring Laura V at 39. Meanwhile, Coldplay have the Rapid Riser, as “Paradise” ascends fifteen places to 21.

The death of Whitney Houston this month, at the age of 48, has created renewed interest in her back catalogue - from which five tracks previously entered my chart. All five now return to the breakers - including “All At Once”, her very first hit anywhere, but which was only a B-side in the UK. Meanwhile, absent from my chart for almost two years, Madonna could soon be on the way back with “Give Me All Your Luvin’” - on which she is joined by M.I.A., who briefly charted previously with “Paper Planes”, and Nicki Minaj, who is looking for her chart debut. So is Flo Rida, whose current release “Wild Ones” could become a second hit sung by Sia - while the second single from the latest album by Gotye, “Eyes Wide Open”, might also soon give him a second success, and Rosenstolz have the chance of a third hit with their fifth breaker, “Lied Von Den Vergessenen”. The other three of this month’s seven new breakers are by acts impressing me for the first time. The 22-year-old California-born Dev - not to be confused with the Radio One DJ with the soporific voice - has a potential hit with “In The Dark”, which briefly charted in the UK several months ago. But one of the most closely-fought battles ever for Chartbuster was narrowly lost by Wiegel, Meirmans and Snitker - not a firm of sinister solicitors, about to be unmasked from monster costumes at the end of an episode of “Scooby Doo”, but a trio of Dutch musicians whose theme from a recent (three-dimensional?!) Dutch movie has been remixed by Armin Van Buuren. The exceptionally high debut in the top forty breakers of “Nova Zembla” suggests that it is almost certain to enter my chart next month - but the young lady guaranteed a place there is currently a contestant in “The Voice van Vlaanderen”, a televised Belgian singing competition which has been running for the last four months. As it approaches its final stages, a collection of the competitors’ performances has been released on CD (hence the eligibility of this one for inclusion here!) - and several of their songs are currently in the "Ultratop 50", the most-sold, most-downloaded tracks of the week there. It remains to be seen whether a 20-year-old from Torhout can go on to become the overall winner, but she is the only contestant who has achieved two chart hits so far - and it’s one of those that now becomes my new Chartbuster. With her version of a song that originally went to number one in my top forty for This Mortal Coil, my Record of the Month for March 2012 is Mayken Hoessen, with “You And Your Sister”.

Unfortunately, Mayken’s version of “You And Your Sister” is nowhere to be found on YouTube - nor, as far as I can tell, any similar websites! So, the links above are instead to the original version of the song, by This Mortal Coil. However, if anyone desperately wants to check out the new version, it can be heard in the latest edition of the three-hour chart show, in MNM radio‘s “Listen Again” facility, here:

http://internetradio.vrt.be/radiospeler ... qsbrand=55

Click “NET GEMIST” (top, middle), then select from near the bottom of the drop-down list “Ultratop 50” or “Ultratop 50 Replay” (depending on whether you want it with or without a presenter!) Once connected, move the cursor to the 21 to 25 minute mark, as “You And Your Sister” has taken a dive to this week’s number 43, straight after Taio Cruz with “Hangover” at 44. ( And, to hear her other hit, “What I Am”, just stay tuned - as that’s new at 42 ! )

Thanks for the comments! :D

I just received the Madonna CD single "Give Me All Your Luvin'" in the post today - and I see, from the credits, that Martin Solveig is among five co-writers! I can't believe I didn't spot his influence on the track until now.....

At the beginning of this month's chart commentary, I wrote:During the first five years of this century.....
So that's the "randomly" selected five year period from which all my favourites are brought together into March's mid-month retro top hundred. I don't think I had even used the internet at all by the beginning of it - but by the end, I was able to hear more of the weekly chart shows of Western Europe again, after a while of only being able to access those of the UK and Germany. So it's the hits of those countries - the latter somewhat more than the former! - that dominate this countdown.

Thirty-nine tracks from these years reached number one in my monthly charts - but several of them were only there for one month, and/or didn't spend as long in my top forty as most other chart-toppers from previously or since. Two of them don't quite make it into my top hundred of 2000-2004 - but they're close, so I also managed to squeeze them into a packed six-hour YouTube journey today, seventeen hits per hour! The hits are quite evenly spread - twenty-three are from 2000, seventeen come from 2001, eighteen each are from 2002 and 2003, and the most, twenty-four, come from 2004. However, none from that most recent year make it into the top ten!

All in all, I don't think this was really one of the best periods for music - indeed, nothing here is in my top hundred of all time. On the 2002 thread in the Retro forum, the exact positions of some of the tracks that were performing strongly a decade ago can be seen. The number twelve from this chart, for example, is my number 150 of all time - while the number one here is at number 105. And those two are both by the same artist - but who? Let's find out.....

For an unprecedented eighth month in a row, my number one changes again. Since the first charts, at the end of the 1970’s, there have been more than twenty wholly or substantially instrumental number ones - but very few instances of one taking over from another. However, the 192nd and 193rd chart-toppers are a rare example of this, as Sandro Silva and Quintino’s “Epic” is replaced by Wiegel, Meirmans and Snitker with “Nova Zembla”. After just missing out on being my Chartbuster last month, the movie theme now rises eighty-six places to enter the top forty at number one. Two of the other five newcomers are also chart debuts - while Dev just sneaks in at 40 with “In The Dark”, Mayken Hoessen arrives at 15 with her reality-show cover version of “You And Your Sister”. In between, there’s a third hit in as many years for Tim Bergling - and this one, like the second, is credited to Avicii. That’s “Levels”, at 28. Ten places lower, there’s a seventh top forty entry for Armin Van Buuren and a third for Adam Young, with “Youtopia” - while Madonna gets her twenty-sixth chart entry at 35 with “Give Me All Your Luvin’”, which has performed somewhat variably in the charts of the world, and not very well at all in the UK! But her new album including it looks set to be the biggest-seller here this week.

A fourteen-place climb to number 24 makes Joe Goddard and Valentina this month’s Rapid Riser with “Gabriel” - and eleven other hits are on the way up. Those include one of the three tracks Lana Del Rey had in the top five in March - but, perhaps surprisingly, it’s “Blue Jeans” which ascends another place to a new peak of number three, and not last month’s highest new entry, “Born To Die”. That’s one of twenty-one tracks moving down this time - which also include Duck Sauce with “Big Bad Wolf”, the fastest faller as it takes an eleven-place dive to number 27, and the former Chartbuster by Sebastian Cruz and Miryel. “Chasing Dreams” could finally be about to drop out, sliding to number 36 in its fourteenth appearance - but it’s now the fifth most successful hit never to reach my top ten. All of this leaves just one non-mover in the top forty this month - and that’s “Cinema”, stuck at number 25 for Benny Benassi and Gary Go.

Davy Jones of the Monkees died a few weeks ago, at the age of 66 - and one of their most well-known songs, “Daydream Believer” is in the top forty breakers. Ten other rather more recent releases (although, in most cases, they are actually 2011 or 2010 recordings) could also be on the way to my top forty in the months ahead. As two Calvin Harris collaborations edge slowly upwards, a solo single from him joins the race - “Feel So Close”. Also ascending very slowly with “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall”, Coldplay now double their chances of a fourth hit with “Charlie Brown”, the third breaker from their latest album “Mylo Xyloto”. But an album that has already generated six hits - all of them reaching the top twenty - could be about to produce two more. Caro Emerald enters the breakers not only with “Dr Wanna Do”, the seventh single from “Deleted Scenes From The Cutting Room Floor”, but also with another track from it, “You Don’t Love Me”. And, while most of the other new potential hits appear to be by acts impressing me for the first time - Chase and Status featuring Delilah.....Tom Hangs and Shermanology.....Emeli Sande.....and Silbermond - there’s an exception, as “Tom Hangs” is yet another pseudonym for the aforementioned Tim Bergling!

In the previous commentary, I alluded briefly to a “rule” of my chart, that there has to be a physical release (CD, or vinyl, or ideally both!) in order for any track to be eligible to be listed as a breaker. That has occasionally prevented worthy submissions from appearing at all - and it was looking increasingly as if something I heard almost exactly a year ago, in the Official Swiss Chart Show on DRS-3, would forever remain in that category. The young lady born as Priska Zemp was interviewed on that programme, when the digital release of her album “Hiding With The Wolves” entered the top ten in her homeland. However, the date of its physical release was put back.....and put back.....and put back. It finally came out this month - so the second highest new breaker is “Sarah”, by Heidi Happy. But the guaranteed top forty entry for May will be the eighth hit, out of eight breakers (including three previous Chartbusters) for a younger singer, now 27 - which, coincidentally, I also heard for the very first time on the Swiss chart show. She recently joined presenter Nik Thomi there for an interview which, although it mainly concentrated on her music and the success of her latest album, also strayed into strange other territories - such as the buying of condoms! And it concluded with her telling, on air, a truly filthy joke! I was quite shocked - not expecting to hear that sort of thing from her at all.....but her music remains as beautiful as ever. My Record of the Month for April 2012 is Katie Melua, “Better Than A Dream”.

In this month's chart commentary, I wrote: “Chasing Dreams” could finally be about to drop out, sliding to number 36 in its fourteenth appearance - but it’s now the fifth most successful hit never to reach my top ten.
And that's a cue for an extra bonus feature this month - the first for quite a while, and a rare two-and-a-half-hour YouTube dip into the top end of my all-time chart. Well, somewhere near the top - as it's a countdown of the forty most successful hits that didn't reach the top ten!

Not surprisingly, most of these tracks got stuck at number eleven - some for several months! - and/or remained in the top twenty during particularly high-scoring periods, collecting as many points as some other chart-toppers.

Almost half were ex-Chartbusters, and almost all were hits somewhere in Europe - although not many did well in the UK! They are sung in several different languages (apart from three instrumentals, two of which are among four television theme tunes), including one that doesn't even exist.....

There are several longer-than-average tracks here, especially at the top end - where a few are ranked impressively highly in my all-time list. I have added a column to show all the current positions - although many will slide slightly downwards, of course, as ongoing successes gradually overtake them!

So, without further ado, here is the full list. And the number one - well inside my top hundred of all time - was a single originally recorded in German, and a major success in central Europe, which was later reworked in English by the same group, who shortened their name for other territories, Too easy to guess.....?
