Since the first charts, at the end of the 1970’s, there have been.....

And that's the five-year period to be covered this time - and probably the most end-loaded of them all. As I only began listening to pop music in early 1978, and prepared my first monthly chart in the summer of 1979, the vast majority of my top hundred of 1975-1979 come from those latter two years. Only a small number of hits of earlier years reached the upper end of my chart in later ones - typically when reissued, or unexpectedly discovered in record shops, or when I checked out a previous release of a song someone else had covered. Indeed, there are just nine tracks here from 1975, seven from 1976 and twelve from 1977 - with the remaining seventy-two from 1978 and 1979! Five of the top hundred are too obscure to be available on YouTube - but all the rest are there, and, as there are a few abnormally long tracks among them (numbers 3, 34, 42 and 46 especially), fitted snugly into six hours today, as I revisited the distant past. Back then, I was at school - and hearing for the first time the singles, mostly long-running Irish successes, that would become my numbers 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 of all time! And now, along with all the other highlights (and maybe quite a few oddities that almost nobody will have heard of anywhere except in this thread!) of the second half of the 1970s, here they are.....

"Intermezzo No.1" is an interesting choice for Abba, never saw it in any personal chart before. I like it as well, how did you discover it?

This is actually one on which I really can give "chapter and verse".....

I first heard this track, week after week after week, in 1983 - without any idea of what it was, who it was by, or even how many years earlier it had been recorded! Back then, the BBC Radio One chart show had one of its worst presenters - the now deceased Tommy Vance, who typically played about thirty of the UK top forty between 5.00 and 7.00 on Sundays.

However, I discovered that my local commercial radio station, Metro Radio, were doing a three-hour chart show based on the official top 100. I'm not sure if it was from 3.00 to 6.00, or from 4.00 to 7.00, but there was definitely some overlap - so while listening to one, I'd record the other to listen to later. I'm almost (but not quite) certain that the presenter was Giles Squire.....who, a few years later, would have an hour-long chart-based programme on the same station, Mondays to Fridays at 4.00. From memory, Monday was the UK albums chart, Tuesday was the UK singles chart, Wednesday was the American singles chart, Friday was a local Tyneside chart, and Thursday was the one never to be missed - the Europarade!

Anyway, the three-hour top 100 programme always featured two new entries from between 100 and 76, then eight new entries and/or climbers from 75 to 31, then the top thirty in full. And it used this wonderful instrumental as its theme tune - part of it would be played at the beginning of each hour, and the last ninety seconds were used as the backing for a (very quick!) read-through recap of the top thirty, just ahead of the number one.

It wasn't until early in 1994 that I saw a television broadcast of the music-documentary-movie "Abba - The Movie", in which the track was featured, and first realised that it was by that group (well, two of them at least.....). I was finally able to identify the title, and to ask a contact in Europe to find me a copy on 7" single. As you probably know, it was the B-side of "Mamma Mia" in some countries (but not in the UK).

When that arrived, it was my second highest new breaker in March 1994.....narrowly losing out to Nilsson's Without You" as that month's Chartbuster! Then it had a seven-month run in my top forty (06 02 02 02 05 07 29), only prevented from reaching number one by Ace of Base "The Sign" and the Croatian Eurovision entry by Put - becoming, by quite a margin, my favourite Abba track of all time!

As I'm going to be busy with work tomorrow afternoon (and, I suspect, well into the evening), I'm posting my new charts a day earlier than usual - and can only apologize that there's somewhat less movement at the top ends than in most months! I've explained this to some extent in the commentary - into which I only just remembered to shoe-horn a reference to another five-year period to hopefully be featured in a couple of weeks' time.....

This is a month of very little change at the top end of my top forty - there are nine non-movers this time, all of them in the top twelve, and that means a second month on top for Wiegel, Meirmans and Snitker with “Nova Zembla”. They’re the first act to manage that since Goose last August - and “Synrise” is still around after a full year in the chart, down one place to 35. But among fifteen other fallers are two extended stayers by another Belgian act, Hooverphonic. Their former number one “Anger Never Dies” is down one place to number 40 in its thirteenth month, while just above it is “The Night Before”, making its fourteenth appearance and now becoming the longest laster. The fastest faller is a much more recent arrival - a new entry last time at 15, former Chartbuster “You And Your Sister” dives twenty-two places to 37 for Mayken Hoessen, a participant from the recent Belgian edition of the singing contest “The Voice”. A variation of this programme, but apparently with a more significant emphasis on contestants’ ability to shout, has since reached the UK!

Last month’s Chartbuster, by the beautiful singer and filthy joke-teller Katie Melua, is the second strongest of six new entries.“Better Than A Dream” debuts at number 22 - but five places higher is the first hit for Flo Rida and the second for Sia, “Wild Ones”. It’s one place above her first success, the former number one “Titanium”. However, Caro Emerald can go one better - not for the first time, three tracks from her album “Deleted Scenes From The Cutting Room Floor” are in my top forty simultaneously. Joining “The Other Woman” are two new entries - “You Don’t Love Me” and “Dr Wanna Do”, at 28 and 36 respectively. Almost half way between them, Switzerland are now represented with the first appearance of Heidi Happy, and “Sarah” at 31. Although the other newcomer this month, “Blesssed”, might also look like a chart debut, Tom Hangs and Shermanology is yet another alias of Tim Bergling, still in my top forty as Avicii with the former number one “Penguin” plus its two vocal variants, and racing up fifteen places to number 13 with “Levels”. That’s the Rapid Riser this time, narrowly beating one of eight other climbers - Madonna’s “Give Me All Your Luvin’”, up fourteen notches at 21.

Although she has been having hits for many years now - indeed, since the second half of the 1980s - the last time Madonna had the Chartbuster was almost a decade ago, in arguably my strangest top forty breakers ever. As no downward movement is permitted there, and the top slot is always reserved for the highest newcomer inside the top 100, there can be occasions in which it can’t accurately reflect tracks moving upwards at speed, because all the positions above them are already taken by (slower) climbers. So, when “Love Profusion” was one of only two new breakers, it was at number one and the other was at number forty, surrounding thirty-eight non-movers! Something similar has happened at the top end of the breakers this month - Emma Hewitt’s “Colours” can’t be listed any higher than number 17, even though it is closer to the top forty than any of the top sixteen potential hits - all still moving upwards at varying speeds, but mainly at a snail’s pace. So that probably stands a very good chance of entering my top forty next month, along with the nine brand new breakers. Those include yet another new Madonna track - “Girl Gone Wild”, the second single from her latest album, “MDNA” - and a second track from Katie Melua’s new album “Secret Symphony”, “The Bit That I Don’t Get”. That could soon join the first in my top forty - while Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull may go on to repeat their success of last year with “Dance Again”.

The other six new breakers are all by acts still looking for a first hit - and only Train have previously impressed me (just slightly!) with “Hey, Soul Sister”. “Drive By” is their latest single. Meanwhile, Triggerfinger have recorded a cover version of the Lykke Li hit “I Follow Rivers” which has proved about equally massively popular in some territories, and which could also be on the way to my top forty - along with new dance tracks from Michael Calfan and Colina. Fun featuring Janelle Monae have already topped the US charts for six weeks with “We Are Young”, and are well on the way towards conquering other parts of the world too - they have the second most impressive new breaker of the month. But the guaranteed new entry in June’s top forty is far from a guaranteed success at the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest. Standing out as only a slight jewel in a sludge of mediocrity (at least based on my first couple of listens to all of this year’s several dozen entries), is a submission whose visual realisation could barely be more at odds with the way it sounds - and I do wish that it was performed by a better singer, or at least one who didn’t seem either to be trying to imitate the vocal style of former winner Lena Meyer-Landrut, or to be enunciating as if her mouth was permanently at least half-full of sand. However, it’s from a country (and certainly not the first) whose contenders were drawn only from a pool of reality-show participants - and it’s still the best offering this time. So, representing the Netherlands, my Record of the Month for May 2012 is Joan Franka, with “You And Me”.

Although she has been having hits for many years now - indeed, since the second half of the 1980s - the last time Madonna had the Chartbuster was almost a decade ago

And that's the five-year period that I've been revisiting today - although Madonna only had two hits in my chart from those years, "Live To Tell" and "Dear Jessie", and neither of those did well enough to reach my top hundred of 1985 to 1989. This was probably the period of my life in which I had the least opportunity to listen to music - as I was in the closing stages of my degree course at the beginning of it, then spending the majority of my years in (more than) full time work. However, with the help of radio cassette recorders and timer-switches, I was regularly tuning in for the Europarade and for several of its component charts - but, on the evidence of this collection, I was enjoying the hits in those from the Netherlands, Germany, Austria and Ireland to a much greater extent than the UK top forty!

Four hundred and seventy-two tracks from this period entered my monthly chart - several of them not until the following decade, or even more recently than that - and twenty-six reached number one. Two of those didn't do well enough to reach the top hundred - indeed, both fell quite a long way short - but I also included them in today's YouTube voyage. Initially I suspected that there may be up to a dozen tracks that wouldn't be available - but I was surprised and delighted to find that several of them have been uploaded at some point since I featured these years individually. Those include two medleys from North Korean princess Kimera - running to six and a half, and twelve and a quarter minutes respectively - and a rarity from Edelweiss, but only in a version running to almost seven minutes!

Just six of my favourites of these five years remain too obscure to be on YouTube - or, I suspect, anywhere else on the internet....one track each from Foster and Allen, The Fureys and Davey Arthur, Berdien Stenberg and Tol and Tol, all also represented elsewhere - and, regrettably, both parts of Mayflower's "Bumm Bumm, the German Hit Connection" ! However, despite their absence, there are so many long tracks, and impressive extended versions available (especially at the top end) that I spread them out over seven hours instead of the usual six. 1988 seems to have fared significantly more poorly than the other years, taking just eleven positions in the chart - with the two earliest years each filling more than twice as many slots. And, while many Eurovision Song Contest competitors are here, only four of them are performing their entries. But which of those ends up right at the top? Let's find out......

My top ten remained very static in May - but it changes considerably in June, with six of last month’s top tracks no longer there. And the other four are also among a total of twenty-three fallers - including Wiegel, Meirmans and Snitker, who topple from the top to number three with “Nova Zembla”. Replacing them, with a 107-place climb to become the highest of seven new entries and my 194th number one is the song that also reached number one in the UK just this week, after already being a number one in the USA and elsewhere - “We Are Young”, by Fun featuring Janelle Monae. Congratulations to them - but can that stay at the top for a second month? Not many hits have managed this recently - and, indeed, there are currently seven former number ones dropping down the top forty. They include Agnes Obel with “Just So” - the fastest faller this time, taking a fourteen-place dive to number 33 - and “Collide” / “Fade Into Darkness” / “Penguin”, one place above her at 32 for Tim Bergling. However, he has now reached the top ten with all four of his hits to date - as “Blessed” (credited to “Tom Hangs and Shermanology”) races up sixteen places to number eight, and “Levels” (credited to “Avicii”) climbs from 13 to number four. Caro Emerald also has two big movers this time - her latest single “Dr Wanna Do” is up ten places at 26, while “You Don’t Love Me” becomes the fourth top ten hit from the same album, zooming up eighteen places to number 10. Six other climbers include a second top ten hit for Sia with “Wild Ones“, as her collaboration with Flo Rida advances eight places to number nine - but this month’s Rapid Riser is a former Chartbuster. Although it has not enjoyed the singles chart success of any of its predecessors, “Better Than A Dream” now gives Katie Melua her highest ever placing on my chart - last month’s number 22 is this month’s number two!

Most of this month’s new entries are in the bottom half of my top forty - including yet another success for Madonna. “Girl Gone Wild” has performed extremely poorly in the UK chart and elsewhere, but it debuts at number 25 in my chart. Six places lower is the third hit for Emma Hewitt - having previously reached number one and number two respectively with “Waiting” and “Disarm Yourself”, both with Dash Berlin, her solo single “Colours” is in at 31. Sophie Ellis-Bextor has also previously had a number one and a number two success in my top forty - with “Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer)” and “Bittersweet” - followed by a number five, “Not Giving Up On Love”. Her fourth success, and the fifth for Bob Sinclar, is.....er, “Rock with You”, at 35 - three spots ahead of “Dance Again”, the fifth hit for Jennifer Lopez, and her second with Pitbull. That leaves only two acts arriving in my top forty for the first time ever - Triggerfinger just manage to sneak in at 40 with their version of the Lykke Li hit “I Follow Rivers”, while Joan Franka had a very disappointing result at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, failing by a long way to reach the final with “You And Me”. But that former Chartbuster is the second highest new entry, crashing in at number 15. No other submission from the 2012 contest has reached the breakers - yet - but a former contestant is back there with a recent reworking of her entry from twenty-five years ago - Liliane Saint-Pierre and “Soldiers Of Love”. A former breaker from Train, “Hey, Soul Sister”, has also returned, following its recent reappearance in the UK charts - and no less than five former top forty hits are listed again, after the deaths this month of their performers. Donna Summer, who passed away aged 63, had four successes in my chart, all of which are back - “I Will Go With You”, “I Don’t Wanna Get Hurt”, “This Time I Know It’s For Real” and “I Feel Love”. And Robin Gibb, who was taken at the age of 62, had only one as a solo artist - “Juliet”, which inexplicably failed to chart in the UK, despite being a major hit elsewhere. Returning to an extremely high position in the breakers, this seems very likely to re-enter my top forty next month.

The frustrating decline in availability of physical product - vinyl singles, CD singles and even CD albums or compilations - continues to mean that some new releases that might otherwise have been there have to be denied places in my top forty breakers. However, there are still eight new potential future hits this month.- and most of those are by acts who have never impressed me before! Sebastian Ingrosso and Alesso featuring Ryan Tedder look likely to enter the UK chart this week with “Calling (Lose My Mind)” while Carly Rae Jepsen and Far East Movement featuring Justin Bieber are both already there with “Call Me Maybe” and “Live My Life” respectively. Todd Terje is from Norway, and could be on the way to my top forty with “Inspector Norse” - while the second most impressive new breaker this time is for an Edinburgh quartet, Django Django. “Default” has not charted in their homeland yet, but is doing better in other countries. The other three new breakers involve artists who previously reached my top forty with recordings made between 2005 and 2009. From Canada, Nelly Furtado peaked at number five with “All Good Things (Come To An End)”, and could double her tally of hits with her collaboration with K’Naan, “Is Anybody Out There”. Moscow-born Regina Spektor reached number ten with “On The Radio“ and number 11 with “Samson” - she could now have her third hit with “Don’t Leave Me (Ne Me Quittez Pas)”. However, a track that is currently spending a third week at number three in Ireland is now guaranteed a place in my July 2012 top forty. It‘s the first Chartbuster, and will become the third hit, for a 26-year old New Wave / indie-pop singer-songwriter and poet from Wales. Her two previous top ten entries in my chart currently stand side by side in my all-time top thousand, at 909 and 910 - “I Am Not A Robot” and “Hollywood”, which peaked at number six and number seven respectively. Both, however, missed the top ten in the UK - as did her current hit! My Record of the Month for June 2012 is Marina and the Diamonds - “Primadonna”.
