Number one thirteen years ago: KILLING TIME Tina Cousins

Number one twenty-six years ago: BA-BA-BANKROBBERY Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung

Yet again there is a new number one - the seventh so far this year, as “Better Than A Dream” by Katie Melua joins six other former chart-toppers among twenty hits moving down this month’s top forty. They include the longest laster - David Guetta featuring Sia, clinging on in at number 38 after eleven months with “Titanium”..... the fastest faller, “Epic”, which dives twelve places to 23 for Sandro Silva and Quintino.....and her predecessor at the top, from Fun featuring Janelle Monae. “We Are Young” falls just one place to number three, leaving two of last month’s newcomers fighting it out for pole position. In the end, Scottish quartet Django Django narrowly miss out, as “Default” climbs six places to number two, while Regina Spektor leaps up a massive thity-four positions, and “Don’t Leave Me (Ne Me Quitte Pas)” becomes my 196th number one. It’s the third success for the 32-year-old Moscow-born singer/songwriter, who previously reached number ten with “On The Radio“ and number 11 with “Samson”. Not surprisingly, it’s this month’s Rapid Riser, with none of the other thirteen climbers this time advancing more than ten places each. Among those also upwardly mobile, Australia’s Emma Hewitt gets a third top ten hit, as “Colours” races up from 20 to ten, and Switzerland’s Heidi Happy is there for the first time, moving up another eight places to number six with “Sarah”. From the Netherlands, Caro Emerald is one place higher, as “You Don’t Love Me” becomes her third top five success - but, perhaps more significantly, “Dr Wanna Do” ascends four places to number 18. That’s now her eighth top twenty hit from the same album, “Deleted Scenes From The Cutting Room Floor”!

There are six new entries this month, and the second highest goes to the only act involved who have had more than one previous hit - the Scissor Sisters. They spent five months at number two with the UK chart-topper “I Don’t Feel Like Dancing”, then peaked at number 13 with “Fire With Fire” - and now “Only The Horses” is in at 29. Two instrumental dance tracks from continental Europe make their debuts in the bottom ten - Todd Terje with “Inspector Norse” at 32 and Michael Calfan with “Resurrection” at 37 - while Colina sneaks in at number 40 singing “Du Und Ich”. Meanwhile, Fun’s second hit from their current album “Some Nights” is its title track - arriving at 34, just two months after its predecessor (and thirty-three places lower!) - which leaves July’s Chartbuster as August’s highest new entry. Dubbed by some as “We No Speak Americano 2012”, but not yet generating much interest except in the Netherlands, WTF! are straight in at number 15 with “Da Bop”.

There have not been many previous top forty entries for the performers of the six new breakers this month. The only one among them with more than one prior hit is Lana Del Rey - who has had three major successes, in less than a year. “Video Games”, “Blue Jeans” and “Born To Die” all reached my top five - indeed, in March, all three were there at the same time. Her latest continental single, “Summertime Sadness”, could be the next - although it is quite a long way away at the moment. So are recent releases by Train and Calvin Harris - who already have five other current breakers between them. “50 Ways To Say Goodbye“ joins “Drive By“ and “Hey, Soul Sister“ for the pop/rock band from San Francisco, while “Let‘s Go“ joins “We Found Love“, “Bounce“ and “Feel So Close“ for the 28-year-old Scotsman whose birth name was Adam Richard Wiles. It features Ne-Yo, also still looking for a first hit - his only previous appearance in the breakers was as one of Pitbull’s sidekicks on “Give Me Everything” - as is 30-year-old German singer Oceana, whose “Endless Summer” has already reached the top five in her homeland. Paloma Faith peaked at number 21 with her first breaker, “Do You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful”, and might now follow that up with “Picking Up The Pieces” - while the track guaranteed to enter in September is only the second breaker for a Canadian producer whose career began in the late 1990s, and who chose a stage-name based on something he once found in his computer! He reached the top three in my chart with “I Remember”, a collaboration with American DJ Kaskade - and next month his new Chartbuster, inspired by a short story by the recently-deceased Ray Bradbury, and featuring guest vocals by Chris James, will be his second hit. My Record of the Month for August 2012 is Deadmau5, and “The Veldt”.

Thanks! I now remember noticing that it was getting fairly close on Saturday evening.

It has taken just a few days more than five years, but less than thirty pages.....

From those figures, I make the weekly averages very close to three posts, but over 380 views ( and it was probably much less at the beginning, a bit more now! ) - all are very much appreciated.

Years ago, I could never have imagined that there could ever be so much interest in my personal chart - and, of course, in the many dozens of other personal charts in the forum!

In this month's chart commentary, I wrote:.....a Canadian producer whose career began in the late 1990s.....
And there's the clue to the only remaining five-year period up until the end of 2009 that I haven't already featured here! Now, half-way through August, it's time for a slightly longer trip back in time than usual, with a six-and-a-half hour YouTube journey through my favourite hits of 1995 to 1999 !

This was a time at which the average track length seemed to be on the increase - hence I realised at a very early stage that it was going to be impossible to fit the whole top hundred into the usual six hours - but also a period in which the quality of music in general seemed to take quite a downturn, at least as far as I was concerned.

It couldn't have helped that the only weekly charts I was able to keep in touch with for much of this period were those of the UK and Germany - but I was certainly finding far less music that I liked than previously. Indeed, only the top five tracks from this list joined ninety-five earlier releases in my top hundred of all time!

However, there were still quite a few impressive tracks in these five years - including many that might reasonably be described as Eurodance! - and twenty-nine made it all the way to number one in my monthly chart. One of those didn't quite qualify for the top hundred, but as usual I have included it anyway. Without further ado, here they all are!

Some great 90s songs which bring back a lot of memories! I still remember all the guys at my school making stupid jokes about the title of each E-rotic single ("Max Don't Have Sex With Your Ex", "Fred Come To Bed" etc.) :wink:

Many thanks for all the comments on the last for now of the five-year charts - and especially for this one:

Damn! Thanks for reminding me this :D
.....because I had been trying to think of ideas for new mid-month features, and this has given me one!

The first thing that came to my mind regarding this hit was that it climbed to its number two peak from being a new entry at 37 - a rise of thirty-five places. I haven't previously brought together all the highest climbers within the monthly charts of the last thirty-three years - so I'll do that in mid-September. Which is a most appropriate time - as, today, I've identified all the tracks that have ever moved up thirty places or more in a month. And there are.....forty-nine so far. But, as I begin the preparation of my new chart, to be revealed in a few days' time, it's already clear that something from the bottom ten of last month's top forty.....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
31 26 05 IN THE DARK Dev
32 ---- 01 INSPECTOR NORSE Todd Terje
33 24 08 BLUE JEANS Lana Del Rey
34 ---- 01 SOME NIGHTS Fun
35 30 10 WITHOUT YOU David Guetta featuring Usher
36 38 03 I FOLLOW RIVERS Triggerfinger
37 ---- 01 RESURRECTION Michael Calfan
38 36 11 TITANIUM David Guetta featuring Sia
39 28 09 AGAIN AND AGAIN Basto!
40 ---- 01 DU UND ICH Colina
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

.....will be going right up into the top ten, becoming the fiftieth hit to climb thirty or more places in the chart. But which one.....?

Meanwhile, I've decided on the coming month's Chartbuster - as usual, cryptically hinted at in my signature until officially revealed. And, as usual, it may or may not be easy to guess!!!

In August, “Don’t Leave Me (Ne Me Quitte Pas”, the new number one for Regina Spektor, became the forty-ninth hit to climb thirty places or more in thirty-three years of my chart. But it is now among twenty-four tracks moving down - and its successor at the top is the fiftieth such major mover. It’s my 197th number one - and the second for the New York-based indie-pop band Fun, as “Some Nights” races up thirty-three places from its number 34 debut. Not surprisingly, that’s this month’s Rapid Riser - and only three out of thirteen other climbers go up six places or more. All three of those were new entries last tiime - Colina moves from 40 to 32 with “Du Und Ich”, the Scissor Sisters ascend from 29 to 23 with “Only The Horses”, and Todd Terje is now inside the top twenty with “Inspector Norse”, advancing thirteen places to number 19. Just above that at 18, August’s Chartbuster is one of only two new entries - Deadmau5 featuring Chris James, with “The Veldt”. The other newcomer is “The Night Out”, the fourth hit for Martin Solveig - sneaking in at number 40.

While it continues to be successful in new territories over a year after its original release, Lykke Li’s “I Follow Rivers” is the fastest faller, tumbling thirteen places to 33 - while “Titanium”, the former number one by David Guetta featuring Sia, is still the longest laster, falling one place at 39 as it completes a whole year in the top forty. And that winning combination of acts could easily be about to replace itself in my top forty, as one of eight new breakers is their follow-up, “She Wolf (Falling To Pieces)”. Only three of the other new potential hits have any major lyrics to speak of - a second track from the latest Regina Spektor album, “All The Rowboats”.....a first from the debut album of 25-year-old singer/songwriter Jessie Ware, “Wildest Moments”.....and “Move In The Right Direction”, the first track I have ever liked by American indie-rock band Gossip. Their singer Beth Ditto had previously reached the breakers, however, with her solo single, “I Wrote The Book”.

Multiple award-winning composer Marvin Hamlisch died in August, at the age of 67 - and one of his best-known works, the former top ten hit “The Entertainer”, now returns to the breakers. Other instrumentals that could reach my top forty in the months ahead are the latest release from Paul Kalkbrenner, “Das Gezabel” - which is already in the top 100 in Germany - and the Swedish House Mafia with “Greyhound”. This makes a somewhat belated arrival, after quite widespread sales success across the continent earlier in the year. And there aren’t many more lyrics in the other two new potential hits. One is another collaboration involving David Guetta, who this time joins forces with Nicky Romero on “Metropolis” - while the other is the brand new Chartbuster, guaranteed a place in October’s top forty. It’s already in the top ten in Belgium and Holland, and has been rising towards the top forty in the UK and Ireland - for a young Swedish DJ, songwriter and producer, Otto Jettmann. My Record of the Month for September 2012 is Otto Knows, with “Million Voices”.

Hi CZB,
nice to see Caro Emerald in your top 10 though I'm surprised that she does so with You Don't Love Me as that's a rather random track on her by the way amazing album "Deleted scenes from the cutting room floor" 8-) .

I've never really been an albums buyer - but that one is indeed quite amazing, with an incredible chart run in her homeland!

This is actually the eighth track from that album to reach my top twenty:

A NIGHT LIKE THIS 14 11 11 12 03 01 05 16 34 38 39

THAT MAN 30 22 17 10 10 10 12 25

STUCK 05 05 03 03 09 21 30 36 37 39

THE OTHER WOMAN 40 20 14 12 13 18 23 29

DR WANNA DO 36 26 22 18 13 ...

YOU DON'T LOVE ME 28 10 07 05 06 ...

and most of them have very long runs, eighteen months or more, in the extended chart:

A NIGHT LIKE THIS

In this month's commentary, I wrote:In August, “Don’t Leave Me (Ne Me Quitte Pas”, the new number one for Regina Spektor, became the forty-ninth hit to climb thirty places or more in thirty-three years of my chart.....its successor at the top is the fiftieth such major mover.
So, half an hour later than half-way through the month (as I had to do some hasty late re-formatting!) and in a change from the usual mid-month features focussing on a particular era, this time I have spent three hours revisiting a more random selection of tracks from throughout the decades - those making the most rapid rises up my charts from one month to the next.

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, there have been just fifty singles that have ever moved up thirty places or more. Nowadays, and for more than two-thirds of the last thirty-three years, the highest climb possible is of thirty-nine places, from 40 to 1 - and only one track has ever managed that!

However, from May 1983 until December 1992 my chart was a top fifty, so even bigger upward moves were possible. Because this chart is ranked first by the magnitude of the move (then next by the position climbed to, in descending order, and finally alphabetically by title) the seven that went up forty places or more have pride of place at the top.

Perhaps surprisingly - except for those whose climb was all the way up from below the top thirty right to number one! - several did not go on to rise any further, or didn't improve their peak by many more places. I've included the full chart runs involving each climb .....even the two that are too obscure to be found anywhere on YouTube! Without further ado, here they all are.
