Eight non-movers this time include "Viva La Vida" by Coldplay, at number one for a fourth month - and now featuring virtually the only vocals in the top five. Non-movers by Steve Mac and Eric Prydz are joined by Dave Darell, up eight places to number five, one of fourteen climbers in the chart, and now the highest-ranking version of "Children" - previously, Robert Miles peaked at number six, and 4 Clubbers at number seven. Completing the top five, Tocadisco are up two more places to number three with "Morumbi", and are now one of six acts with two hits each in the current top forty. Milk Inc. are still in the top fifteen with both "Forever" and "Race"; Sara Bareilles is up to number 13 with "Bottle It Up", but takes a dive with "Love Song"; and Duffy doubles her tally of hits, with "Warwick Avenue" remaining in the top ten as "Stepping Stone" arrives at number 25. While Madonna gains a 22nd top forty hit with "Miles Away" at 21, and an eleventh top ten hit as "Give It 2 Me" continues to climb, up another five places to number 10 - and both of Amy MacDonald's hits are accelerating up the chart. "This Is The Life" moves up seven places to number 30, while "Mr Rock And Roll" is the joint Rapid Riser for the second month running, racing up another eighteen places to number 12. The other joint Rapid Riser is Ian Carey, surging from 40 to 22 with "Red Light".

The highest of six new entries is a third top forty hit for Infernal - the Danish dance duo are in at number 20 with last month's Chartbuster, "Whenever You Need Me". Further down, two Frenchmen are new side by side - Toulouse-born tribal-house producer Laurent Wolf arrives at number 37 with "Wash My World", one place above Paris-born singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sebastien Tellier. "Divine" was last year's French entry in the Eurovision Song Contest, but makes a very belated arrival in my chart following its more recent use in a Renault television commercial. And completing another international line-up of newcomers, with "The Storm" at number 40, are German producer Jerry Ropero and vocalist/songwriter Cozi Costi. The last of these may well be as unknown as the others to most people in the UK - but millions have unwittingly heard some of her very earliest work, because as a schoolgirl chorister she was one of the performers of the theme tune to "Blackadder's Christmas Carol"! Meanwhile, the longest laster on the top forty is still "Larger Than Life" by Regi, Wout and Caren Meynen, staying at number 28 in its twelfth month - and the fastest faller is Lizzy Pattinson with "Just Breathe", sinking fourteen places to number 36 and one of fourteen hits moving down this month.

Strangely enough, I have only recently discovered that "Just Breathe" was originally (just!) called "Breathe", and was briefly a UK hit twice - in 2000 and 2001 - for Faith Hill. Almost a decade later, her version of the song is now among nine brand new breakers this month. Tipped to be a major success in the UK in the next few weeks, Timmy Vegas featuring Bad Lay-Dee have a potential future hit on my chart too with "Another Dimension" - which samples, among others, "Gypsy Woman". Adele came and went too quickly from the UK chart to make an impression on me with "Make You Feel My Love", but now it has made a more leisurely climb to the top end of the Dutch chart, and becomes her second breaker. Fragma could be set for a fifth top forty hit with "Memory", and Ian Oliver might be in line for a second hit with the "Lambada"-inspired "Skankin'". Two further instrumentals are a bit nearer to the chart, for newcomers John Dahlback with "Pyramid" and Butch with "Amelie" - and the Killers look very likely to register a first hit on my top forty with "Human", narrowly missing out on being the Chartbuster. That honour goes, for the second time in the space of less than a year, to Silvy De Bie and Wout Van Dessel. Some of their fifteen previous breakers have taken a long time to get there, others have been much quicker - but they have all made it through into my chart. And their latest single is now guaranteed to enter next time, to give them their sixteenth hit. My Record of the Month for January 2009 is Sylver, with "Rise Again".

Nineteen hits move down my chart this month, including the whole of January's top three. Having risen slowly to number 3, Tocadisco's "Morumbi" dives ten places to number 13; after three months in the runner-up slot, Steve Mac's "Paddy's Revenge" also falls ten places to number 12; and following four months in pole position, Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" is the fastest faller, as it takes one of the biggest tumbles from the top in nearly thirty years of my monthly chart, landing at number 16. Heading an all-new top three, the 169th chart-topper is one of sixteen climbers in the new chart - Dave Darell, with a new version of "Children", the instrumental which previously reached number 6 for Robert Miles and number 7 for 4 Clubbers. Matching his previous peak with "Serenity", Armin van Buuren climbs another four places to number 2 with "In And Out Of Love", and it's a fifth top five success for Milk Inc. as "Race" moves up five places to number 3. One of just two non-movers in the top forty, Eric Prydz remains at number 4 with "Pjanoo", and completing the top five is a former Chartbuster, racing up another nine places - Miley Cyrus with "See You Again".

Vinyl formats have been meant to be dying a death for quite some time now, but this month there are no less than four seven-inch singles in the top ten. Amy McDonald moves up another six places to number 6 with "Mr Rock and Roll", still riding high in some territories long after its UK success, closely followed by Madonna's "Give It 2 Me" - now at number 7, and climbing for a fifth month in a row. Duffy falls back just one place to number 8 with "Warwick Avenue", and the Killers arrive at number 9 with "Human", the highest of just three new entries. The second highest new entry is also a chart debut, for German techno DJ Bülent Gürler, otherwise known as Butch - whose instrumental "Amelie" races up 103 places to number 10. Which means that January 2009's Chartbuster, "Rise Again" by Sylver, is actually the lowest of February's newcomers - but it still makes a strong entry at number 17. Half of that duo, Wout van Dessel, is also one third of the longest laster on my chart, as "Larger Than Life", co-performed by Regi and sung by Caren Meynen, moves back up one place to nunber 27, just ahead of this month's Rapid Riser - "The Storm" by Jerry Ropero and Cozi, up twelve places to number 28 after finally charting at number 40, following a very slow rise through the breakers, last month.

While John Dahlback, Adele, Ian Oliver, TI featuring Rihanna and Timmy Vegas featuring Bad Lay-Dee all make major moves up the top 40 breakers, and Coolio returns with "Gangsta's Paradise", a former breaker from 1995 which recently reappeared in the UK Top 40 while he was a "Celebrity Big Brother" housemate, there are just five new potential future hits this month - and all are by acts impressing me for the first time. The Outsiders are charting in the Netherlands - but, it would seem, not in the UK! - with "Keep This Fire Burning", and the same will probably be true for Marco V. It's possible that his new release was meant to be called "Coma Aid B" - as the letters could then be rearranged into the title of the Kim Wilde hit on which it is based - "Cambodia"! Lily Allen's second UK chart-topper "The Fear" could become her first hit in my chart, and the artist who preceded her at number one in the UK, Lady GaGa, has the second highest new breaker - but not with "Just Dance". Having heard this track for several months now, I have yet to understand its mass appeal - whereas the follow-up, "Poker Face", which is already charting in the UK, and is in the top five in Ireland on downloads only, has made a much more immediate and favourable impact on me.

However, this month's Chartbuster comes from a 21-year-old singer and actress born in Estonia. Her first single, from her album "Love Is Dead", topped the charts in her home country last year - but has more recently begun to make an impact in other territories.......and is somewhat difficult to describe. But a comment elsewhere on UKMix, "A mixture of pop and rock, with some touch of weirdness and creepiness!" is probably as accurate as any. Guaranteed a place in next month's top forty, my Record of the Month for February 2009 is Kerli, with "Walking On Air".

.....following four months in pole position, Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" is the fastest faller, as it takes one of the biggest tumbles from the top in nearly thirty years of my monthly chart, landing at number 16.

Checking back over the years, there have been more instances of major dives by singles that have topped my chart than I remembered.......this is actually the fifteenth time that the number one has fallen straight out of the top ten!

So, for this month's extra feature, I'll present a quick summary over three days (not necessarily consecutive!) of those fifteen number ones. Today:

This Spanish group had many hits in their home country - but I discovered this one when it charted in the Netherlands, reaching the top three. Later taken to similar heights in new lands in a cover version by Loona, the original release by Mecano spent four months as my number one before taking a dive.

One of three songs with "sister" in their title that topped my chart, this was also a top twenty hit in the Netherlands, for the "dream-pop" [? - so Wikipedia describes it!!] UK-based act. But it wasn't among their UK-released singles, including the very minor chart hit "Song To The Siren". Their three months at number one were interrupted by Nicole (more of whom later?).

Replacing "You And Your Sister" at the top, then repeating its ten-places tumble, was yet another single that was proving popular in the Netherlands. Unfortunately, when it had reached number two, this new interpretation of Carl Orff's well-known classical piece "Carmina Burana" was declared illegal in that country, and remaining unsold copies were confiscated and destroyed!

Finally a hit from my chart that enjoyed (brief) success in the UK - albeit, as tended to happen, some time after it had reached number one in the German-speaking countries and notched up several top ten placings elsewhere. Included in its unusually yoyo-like run in my chart was a topple of ten places from the summit - although it was the same act's follow-up single, the UK-unreleased "My Heart Beats Like A Drum", that replaced it as my number one!

As previously mentioned, this superior cover version of an old Bryan Adams track was in the top five of my chart while it experienced continental success in mid-2002, and had already begun a rapid descent by the time it entered the UK chart at number one. Although it never returned to my chart, it is clearly still finding new fans even now, over six years on -,it is frequently in the UK top 200, and sometimes it's even back in the top 75!

One of Sweden's most popular pop quartets - Ulf Ekberg, Jonas Berggren, Jenny Berggren and Malin "Linn" Berggren - had no less than six number ones on my chart. However, this one made a rather faster descent than most of the others. It was the third hit single from their album "The Bridge" in some territories, but the UK was not among them!

The Crazy Frog and the Snuffie Bunny enjoyed spectacular success in a variety of countries - so why could Dolly the Donkey only manage top twenty placings in France, Belgium and Scandinavia? This version of "Ieva's Polka" toppled eleven places last year after spending five months as my number one - a duration that no other track had achieved since the end of 1999. Where will it be in the chart of the decade?

It was the only top ten hit in my chart for the American rock band fronted by Debbie Harry - but they also reached the top twenty with "Sunday Girl", "Dreaming" and "Island Of Lost Souls".

Mariah Carey prevented the German duo consisting of Luci van Org and Ralf Goldkind from getting to number one in their homeland, but their quirky single replaced Jam and Spoon (more of whom shortly!) at number one in my chart. The original German version was a top five hit in Austria and Switzerland, but surprisingly reached the top ten in the Netherlands too, and charted for a week in Belgium - while an English version was featured in one of the "Never Ending Story" films.

Of all the many Eurovision Song Contest entries that reached my chart, just four made it to number one - and this Swiss entry spent the longest there. Having made an even bigger climb to the top than the fall that ensued, it remains my only number one in nearly thirty years that never occupied any other top fifteen position! And, perhaps unsurprisingly, it is the only song I have ever bought that is sung in the Romans[c]h language.

"Right In The Night" was the only one that spent more than a single month at the top, but Rolf Ellmer and the late Markus Löffel had an incredible seven number ones on my chart. Two were as Tokyo Ghetto Pussy, while the other five were as Jam and Spoon. And on all five of the latter, they were joined by Plavka Lonich, a Croatian/Peruvian singer born in America. This one took the biggest tumble, in the fourth of just five months in my top forty, and currently sits only just inside the top 900 of my all-time chart.

The German singer who once won the Eurovision Song Contest has had three number ones in my chart. This was the second of the three, following "Ein Leises Lied" from 1991, and a few months ahead of "Mehr Als Nur Zusammen Schlafen Geh'n", which reached the top at the end of 1993. But, by diving nineteen places to number 20, "Wenn Ich Dich Nicnt Lieben Würde" is the fastest faller ever from the number one position. That's quite a record, and might never be beaten! But the same could probably be said for Nicole's total of twenty-one top ten hits in my chart - currently, that is seven more than anybody else!

Ten singles climb up this month’s chart - and, with a move of nine places from its entry position of number 10, “Amelie” by Butch is both the Rapid Riser and the new, 170th, number one. Although several wholly and near-wholly instrumentals have topped my chart in almost thirty years, this is only the third time that one has replaced another. Both previous instances of this were in 1997 - in May of that year, Malcolm McLaren ousted Chicane’s “Offshore” with “House Of The Blue Danube“; and seven months later, Dario G’s “Sunchyme / Chyme” took over at the top from DJ Quicksilver’s “Bellissima”. Now, after only one month in pole position, Dave Darell‘s “Children“ falls one place to number two - remaining just ahead of Armin van Buuren and Sharon den Adel, as “In And Out Of Love“ also falls one place, landing at number three. Eighteen other hits are sliding, most of them taking bigger dives than this - and the fastest faller is “Wish You Were Here” by Jan Wayne with Scarlet, which goes down thirteen places to number 36 after eight months in the top forty.

There are four non-movers this time - Miley Cyrus and Amy MacDonald hold on to their positions inside the top ten, and Maria Mena maintains hers just outside it, while the longest laster, “Larger Than Life” by Regi, Wout and Caren Meynen sticks at number 27 after fourteen months in the chart. And there are six new entries, four of which are by solo female acts all making their top forty debuts with major upward moves from the breakers. Last month’s Chartbuster, Estonia’s Kerli, advances sixty-six places to enter at number 16 with the creepy “Walking On Air”; Enfield-born Adele races up seventy-four places to arrive at number 30 with “Make You Feel My Love”; and Londoner Lily Allen vaults 104 places to appear at number 17 with “The Fear”. But beating the three of them in all respects, New Yorker Lady GaGa climbs 106 places to become the highest new entry at number 10 with “Poker Face”, with which she has already reached number one in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway and Sweden. Sweden is the homeland of the 19-year-old DJ John Dahlback, who has a new entry with “Pyramid” at number 26 - and, as the first Yves Larock hit drops out of my chart, the second one replaces it. “Rise Up” has gone, and “Say Yeah” is in at number 40.

A new version of the Tamperer’s former breaker “Feel It” is back for another attempt at chart action - and among nine brand new breakers this month, there are three by acts that have previously reached the top three of my chart. “Something” was the first of four hits so far for Lasgo, who are now looking for another with “Gone”. Liz Kay entered my chart at number one with “When Love Becomes A Lie” - her latest offering is “You’re Not Alone”. And the second highest new breaker is from Armin Van Buuren, with vocals on new release “Unforgivable“ provided by Jaren. Of the six acts appearing now for the first time, two are particularly noteworthy - a 31-year old from Iceland, Emiliana Torrini, whose “Jungle Drum” is the shortest single to reach the breakers for quite some time, running to just two minutes and eight seconds - and Dutch singer Rita Hovink, who died thirty years ago at the age of 35, but has recently returned to the Dutch charts with a 1976 recording I had never previously heard, combined with the voice of Gerard Joling to make a new duet.. The 48-year-old singer has even been been incorporated - in a somewhat macabre fashion - into an original television performance of “Laat Me Alleen“ to make a new video of the song - and both this and the version without him can be seen on YouTube. For the purposes of my chart, the two versions are combined.

Other new breakers this month come from Meck featuring Dino, Ferry Corsten featuring Betsie Larkin and Ron Van Den Beuken featuring Nicole Tyler. The last of these, “Far Away”, is as a new interpretation of Chicane’s “Theme from ‘Harry’s Game’”-inspired “Saltwater” - which, as the mash-up “Bruised Water” with Natasha Bedingfield, continues to edge ever nearer to the top forty. But the Chartbuster, guaranteed a place there next month, is a song which is featured in the soundtrack of a recent German film, “Berlin Calling”. Already in the top three in Belgium, my Record Of The Month for March 2009 is by the Leipzig-born Paul Kalkbrenner - “Sky And Sand”.

There are eleven climbers in the top forty this month - and the major movers are the six tracks that were new entries in March. Yves Larock’s “Say Yeah” is up from 40 to 28, John Dahlback’s “Pyramid” vaults nine places to number 17, and former Chartbuster “Walking On Air” rises five places to number 11 for Kerli. Adele’s first hit on my chart reaches the top ten, as “Make You Feel My Love” is this month’s Rapid Riser, racing up twenty-one places to number nine; Lily Allen‘s recent UK number one “The Fear“ is two places higher, climbing ten places; and a more recent chart-topper - not just in the UK, but all over the world - becomes the 171st number one on my chart. Lady GaGa’s “Poker Face” was last month’s highest new entry at number 10, and now climbs nine places to the top. It would appear that a seven-inch single release is planned - and if it materialises, this will be my first number one available on that format since KT Tunstall’s “Under The Weather” ended a three-month spell there three years ago. There are already another five seven-inch singles in the top ten - the most for quite some time.

Meanwhile, twenty-four of last month’s hits move down, including former Chartbuster “Whenever You Need Me” by Infernal - the fastest faller, sliding fifteen places at number 37 - and “Larger Than Life” by Regi, Wout and Caren Meynen, the longest laster, still just inside the top thirty after fifteen months in the chart. And there are five new entries, all of which are by acts making their chart debut. After five months in the breakers, MIA finally flies in at number 40 with “Paper Planes”, from the movie “Slumdog Millionaire”; and four places higher, Marco V arrives with “Coma Aid”. This is an instrumental reworking of “Cambodia”, a song which has already peaked twice at number five in my chart - originally for Kim Wilde in 1981, then again twenty years later for Pulsedriver. Not many Icelandic acts have ever reached my top 40, but one comes in this month - Emiliana Torrini is new at number 22 with “Jungle Drum” - which, running to just two minutes and eight seconds, is one of the shortest hits ever. Rotterdam-born trance DJ, remixer and producer Ferry Corsten crashes in at number 18 with “Made Of Love”, featuring vocals by New Yorker Betsie Larkin; and the highest new entry, straight in at number four, is last month’s Chartbuster. Paul and Fritz Kalkbrenner have already spent ten weeks in the top ten in Belgium with their track from the recent German film “Berlin Calling” - “Sky and Sand”.

There are nine new breakers this month - mostly by acts impressing me for the first time. Flo Rida and Kesha’s take on an old Dead Or Alive hit, “Right Round”, is doing extremely well in the UK and elsewhere; electropop synth duo La Roux also have a potential hit with “In For The Kill”, as does German-based house music producer Kurd Maverick with his new version of the former New Order hit “Blue Monday”. Dresden rock band Polarkreis 18 could be on the way to my top forty with “Allein Allein“, which has already had major success in several countries - and Delerium finally have a potential hit with a song originally released many years ago, “Silence”. The vocals on this, however, are by Sarah McLachlan, who previously had a solo breaker with “Adia”. Two acts are looking to double their tally of hits - Kelly Clarkson made it to number 24 with “Because Of You” and Paola and Chiara peaked at number seven with “Vamos A Bailar”. Now they’re back, with “My Life Would Suck Without You” and “Vanity And Pride” respectively. Having notched up his second hit only last month, Yves Larock could already be in line for a third with “Listen To The Voice Inside”. But the artist who is guaranteed her third hit next time is a singer-songwriter who was born in Penarth, Wales. Her two previous hits both reached my top three, and are currently just eleven places apart in my all-time chart - “They” stands at 356, and former Chartbuster “Will I” is at 367. So how will 23-year-old Jemma Griffiths fare with her new single? My Record of the Month for April 2009 is Jem, with “It’s Amazing”.

Lady Gaga's swift ascent to Number 1 caught me completely by surprise! Especially when "Just Dance" made absolutely no dent in your chart. I thought "Just Dance" was a more immediate track - but now that "Poker Face" has had time to do its work on me, it's gone from a slow burn to a full-on inferno that's taken me by surprise. I now agree and accept that "Poker Face" is a far better track, but up to even 3 weeks ago, I would not have agreed.

Quite how she got away with the blatant advertising in the video for that online betting site - remember, online gambling is illegal in the US, and there have been cases of the authorities there closing down overseas operations targetting US customers - I will never know, as the video appears to be the same in the US.

I'm also a bit surprised that your Number 1 is shared with both the US and the UK right now - no offence, but your chart is relatively slow moving and your climbers typically seem to already be past their peak in the UK (those that make the UK charts anyway), and your taste is eclectic enough that you don't normally have a UK Number 1 sitting atop your chart. Further evidence, I think, of the greatness of that particular track.

Will Ishtar EVER fall off your chart? A whole year on seems way way too generous to that particular concoction. What do you think of this year's Belgian entry, by the way?

And while it's good to see Delerium's Silence finally make some impact, shame on you that you didn't get on board 8 years ago! The earlier remixes were far better than those reheats from last year - and that's spoken as a true fan of that particular track. (Whatever about Delerium, you really need to look into Sarah McLachlan's back catalogue. She deserves to be just as big on this side of the pond as she is in North America. Even "Adia" is far from her best single).

Indeed.......and, as Blondie, Jennifer Rush and Coldplay didn't reach my number one until they were on the way down in the UK chart, while Europe and DJ Sammy made it before they were even released here, this is actually the first occasion in nearly thirty years that a track is the UK number one and my number one at the same time!!!

I'm not really sure what it is about the most recent remix that has convinced me of its merit. Hearing it for many weeks on all of the Belgian Ultratop chart shows must have helped (and it will also begin a few weeks in the Nederlandse Top 40, from this coming Friday!) - but, on checking back, the earlier version had quite a long run in the UK Top 40 at the end of 2000 (and, of course, Ireland got it a year earlier!). So it had plenty of time to make an impact on me way back then, but somehow didn't! Anyway, the 12" arrived today, and the CD single is on the way.......

The only two 2009 entries I've heard so far are those that have featured in the national chart shows I listen to - and I didn't really rate neither of them. Denmark's seems very dull - not significantly different from the most forgettable tracks Ronan Keating has been involved with in the past.......while the lyrics of the Netherlands entry strike me as the sort of thing the UK used to enter - without particular success - in the 80s / early 90s. It's not quite "Half the world is hungry..." - but it's not far off! Just not for me - although I have previously bought some solo singles by most of the trio.

I'm going to try to set aside time in the next few days to listen to all the 2009 entries (if indeed they are all now chosen? I expect they are). I thought about setting aside five, or even ten, places in next month's breakers especially for Eurovision songs - although it will depend on the quality of the new submissions! I recently discovered the Eurovision internet radio station "ESCRadio.com" ( http://www.escradio.com/player/default.asp?bw=hi&pl=wma ) and frequently have this playing in the background. Nothing for 2009 seems to be on their playlist yet - but virtually all the old entries I've enjoyed turn up there from time to time. Including Ishtar, which is still played quite frequently - in fact, that was on earlier today!

Perhaps I should do an extra feature on my favourite Eurovision entries, in the next month or two. But it might be best to wait for Ishtar (and Sebastien Tellier) to drop out. I don't suppose either are likely to remain in my chart much longer - but you never know!

There are three non-movers this month - and, for the first time in 2009, they include the number one, as Lady GaGa spends a second month at the top with “Poker Face”. However, two former Chartbusters and two major movers are all chasing at her heels in the top five, and any of these could easily be in pole position next time. “Sky And Sand” by Paul and Fritz Kalkbrenner, now in its fourteenth week in the top ten in Belgium, is up two places to number two; “Walking On Air” by Kerli, a high new entry this week in Germany, is up eight at number three; Ferry Corsten and Betsie Larkin race up fourteen places to number four with “Made Of Love“; and this month’s Rapid Riser, Emiliana Torrini with “Jungle Drum”, climbs from its entry position of 22 to number five. Seven other climbers include Marco V’s take on “Cambodia”, up sixteen places to number 20 - and there are five new entries, from four different acts. Lasgo’s current Dutch and Belgian hit “Gone” comes in at 21, while their previous single “Out Of My Mind” - rumoured to be getting a UK release - also arrives at number 38. This brings their total tally of hits to six, out of eight breakers - the best to date being “Something”, which peaked at number two in 2002. Jem also reached number two with “Wish I”, and now her former Chartbuster “It’s Amazing” is the highest new entry at number 17, her third hit. She also peaked at number three with “They” - as did Fragma with “You Are Alive”. They now have a fifth hit with “Memory”, in at 35. And the final newcomers are Polarkreis 18, whose debut hit “Allein Allein” enters at number 32.

Twenty-one hits are sliding down, including fastest faller Madonna with “Give It 2 Me”, plummeting sixteen places to number 31 after eight months in the top 40, and longest laster “Larger Than Life” by Regi, Wout and Caren Meynen, down six at 36. Having peaked at number 14 for three months in 2008, this is only the twelfth single in nearly thirty years to spend sixteen months in my chart without ever reaching the top ten! Meanwhile, as two of 2008’s Eurovision Song Contest entrants - Belgium’s Ishtar and France’s Sebastien Tellier - cling on in right at the bottom of the chart, the 2009 contest is now approaching. And I have managed to find five submissions with the potential to enter my chart in the months ahead. Albania last reached the breakers in 2004 with their most successful entry so far, and this time they have another good effort, performed by sixteen-year-old Kejsi Tola. Andorra are represented by a somewhat older Susanne Georgi, who previously reached number seven in my top 40 as part of Me and My with “Dub-I-Dub”, while Norway’s Alexander Rybak already seems to be an early favourite. Just ahead with me, though, are the Swedish entry from Malena Emman - and the somewhat unusual Slovenian song by Quartissimo, which had me reaching for my stop-watch and establishing that the singer can be heard for a total time of one minute out of the three. She sings for forty seconds of the last minute, twenty seconds of the second minute, and not at all in the first…….which is the one I like the best!

There are eight further new potential future hits this time, and among them only one artist who has previously impressed me - Lily Allen. Still in my top ten, and in charts around Europe with “The Fear”, she has followed this up with different singles in different countries - and both of them are new in the breakers, somewhat negative in tone, but irresistibly performed. One is called “Not Fair”, while the other.......isn’t. Meanwhile, looking for their first hit in my chart are Deadmau5 featuring Kaskade, Empire Of The Sun, Discobitch, Dubguru, and someone who has been making records I have hated for years, Pink. The inclusion of “Please Don’t Leave Me” is entirely due to DJ and former “Big Brother” contestant Adele Roberts, who I have heard playing the far superior “Digital Dog Edit” version several times this month on her late-night programme on Galaxy FM. Disappointingly, this version is not included on the recent UK single release - nor, it would seem, those in other countries either. However, this month’s Chartbuster, guaranteed to enter my top 40 in June, is a 21-year-old singer born in Vanersborg, Sweden. Winning the “Pop Idol” contest in her homeland four years ago led to several major hits there - but her latest single looks set to bring her to the attention of a much wider audience across the continent. And this may even possibly include the UK, where it is already receiving airplay on some major radio stations. My Record of the Month for May 2009 is Agnes Carlsson, with “Release Me”.

Eurovision has begun!! And Belgium's entry for ALST year is still in!

"Larger Than Life" by Regi, Wout and Caren Meynen, down six at 36. Having peaked at number 14 for three months in 2008, this is only the twelfth single in nearly thirty years to spend sixteen months in my chart, without ever reaching the top ten!

So for this month's retro feature, it's a look back at those twelve hits which, in various ways,
managed to spend a very long time in the lower regions of my monthly chart - but never ever got to the top ten. The majority of these were in the current decade - but, even more rarely, a few were in the 1980's and 1990's. And it's those that are now covered in the first part of this feature:

For reasons lost in the mists of time, this UK chart-topper from 1981 - performed with an Oriental image by Scottish singer Mary Sandeman - returned to the lower regions of my chart for a longer run three years later, becoming the only long-running hit of the first decade that failed to ever reach my top ten.



02 - TELL ME A POEM Papermoon

This quiet vocal/guitar piece by a duo from Vienna reached the top five in Austria, but didn't spread any further into the charts of Europe. It was the first CD single I ever bought (no vinyl release being available, unfortunately!) and made the slowest ever climb up my top forty, only reaching its number 11 peak in its seventeenth month. However, the descent was then considerably quicker!

This closing theme tune from a 66-episode Dutch television drama serial set in a detention centre for women entered my chart in the same month as "Tell Me A Poem", but reached its number 11 peak sooner - well, a little sooner. It also made a fast descent, finally dropping out at almost exactly the same time as the series finished airing. Having been selected as an Alarmschijf, it reached the top ten in Holland - but, not surprisingly, failed to chart anywhere else.



04 - NEKA MI NE SVANE / HOLD BACK THE RISING SUN - Danijela

There have been several long-running Eurovision hits in my chart over the years, and this was one of the longest of them all. Croatia's entry in the 1998 contest, it was the first performed, and finished in fifth place. My Record Of The Month in June 1998, it spent five months peaking at number 11 at the end of the year and the beginning of 1999. I recall that it was some time into this long run that I managed to obtain the CD single - in the early months, I had to make do with a recording from the contest. Somehow, it then became strange not to hear a round of applause at a particular point during the song!

This young Indonesia-born singer had more success around Europe with the single "Boom Boom" than this follow-up - strangely released with two different titles, and which was my Record Of The Month in October 2001. In complete contrast with some of the others already mentioned, it then entered at its peak position of 11, and moved downwards in every single one of the next fifteen months!



06 - HEAVEN ABOVE Future Breeze

The German DJs and producers Markus Boehme and Martin Hensing are more well-known for other single releases, but this was the only one I ever liked. Reaching number 20 fairly quickly, it remained there for six months before making a leisurely descent through the bottom half of the top forty.



07 - LIGAYA Gouryella

This track gave the Dutch trance act a minor hit in Germany and the Netherlands, but it peaked for three months just below my top ten, followed by a slow slide downwards. They never troubled my chart again - but one of the participants, Ferry Corsten, is currently in my top five with "Made Of Love".



08 - PARADISE Novaspace

The only act so far in this list who had any other entries in my chart - they peaked at number 3 with their cover versions of both "Time After Time" and "Guardian Angel" - this German dance project had one of the strangest ever runs with this example of their own material. It bounced around the bottom end of my top 40 for nearly two years, without ever going higher than number 30 - and is over six hundred places higher in my all-time chart than anything else peaking at that position!
