Mariah Carey only at #3?
Okay, where to start?
Mariah is one of my biggest inspirations. She is my favourite artist of all time, and there is no other singer in this world who even comes to close to her, IMO. Mariah is a true genius. Her music has gotten me through some rotten times, and I honestly do not know what I would do without Mariah in my life.
Her voice is just so delicate, so soothing and yet so powerful. Her songs are just mesmorising, but the highlight is always her voice -
that irreplaceable voice. She is incredibly talented, and I don't think she gets half of the praise that she deserves. Her song writing skills are simply superb, and even when Walter and her usual hit writers departed, she still kept churning out those classics.
I think she is so beautiful, and her transformation from the 1990 innocent angel, to her "Mimi" era was just so inspiring. She really came out of her shell, and decided to do what she wanted to do, and I can't say how much respect I have for her for that. It takes so much courage for someone to fully become themselves, and break free of such a controlling person, where nobody appreciates your real self, and you can't even express your true feelings.
Her self-titled debut album, is by far, the greatest debut album of any female singer. Each and every track is a standout, and her voice is on top form. It may be over eighteen years old, but it still sounds as fresh as it did back then. "Prisoner" and "Vanishing" are the greatest album tracks.
"Emotions" is very personal, and I can really feel Mariah's emotion in this. Her vocals are even better than on her debut, and all three singles were classics. "The Wind" is one of the most diverse tracks Mariah did in the early 90's, and it's by far the most moving. A brilliant slice of adult contemporary.
"Music Box" is just a masterpiece. This could have been mistaken for a 'Greatest Hits' package. I've recently been into "I've Been Thinkin' About You", and "Never Forget You". Both were much more in the direction that Mariah wanted to go in, and I love how we get a little but more of her in each of releases.
"Merry Christmas" is the greatest Christmas album of all time. Each and every track is soulful, and perfectly sung. It just isn't Christmas without this record.
"Daydream" is simply undescribable. She really went up in leaps and bounds in the 90's, and "Daydream" was her greatest release at that point. I can't explain the feeling that I get from this album. Each track is so carefully sung, and there isn't a weak moment. It's full of soothing 90's R&B-influenced ballads that just can't be beaten.
"Butterfly" is one of the greatest creations to ever exist on earth. It's easily the best R&B album of all time. Mariah's vocals are softer, but more relaxing and even more beautiful. I just loved this era from start to finish. Her image, the album art, the music, the videos, the tour - just everything. "Breakdown", "Close My Eyes", "My All", Whenever You Call" are some of my favourite songs of all time.
"Outside" is a new favourite of mine. It's really personal to me, and at the moment I'm listening to it at least two or three times a day. That last chorus is simply sublime, and I think this might become my favourite Mariah track of all time in a few months.
"Rainbow" was again, a fantastic slice of Pop/R&B. "Crybaby", "After Tonight", "Thank God I Found You", "Heartbreaker", "How Much" and "Petals" were all just wonderful. I also loved the album art, and thought the tour was just brilliant.
"Glitter" was good, but not really on par with the rest of her albums. I still enjoyed it, but I just felt really sorry for her. She didn't deserve to have all of that negative press, and her emotional breakdown was difficult to watch.
"Charmbracelet" was immensley laid-back and relaxing. I loved her vocals, because her soft coo's were very appropriate for the chillout vibe that came with the record. "My Saving Grace" and "Miss You" are must-haves. She really shines on these.
"The Emancipation Of Mimi" was the greatest come back of all time. So many of the songs are in my Top 50 Mariah songs. It's just a 21st century classic, that any Pop or R&B fan must have. It's slick. It's well produced, and her vocals were her best since her 1994-1997 period, where I feel her vocals were the best. "We Belong Together" was just a masterpiece, "Shake It Off" is just pure genius, and her throwback "old school" ballads are legendary. "Mine Again", "Fly Like A Bird" and "Circles" are just superb. A perfect record. I was so proud to see her return at such a high level.
"E=MC2" wasn't as good as its preceeder, but it's still solid. There's no real 'standout', but I enjoy each and every track. I couldn't ask for anything more.
Mariah is a legend that I will admire for the rest of my life. Words can't describe how much her music moves me, and I hope she continues to write classics for many years to come. She might have lost her trademark belts, and her recent album isn't another 10 million seller, but she is still beautiful, she still keeps churning out classics for her fans, and her slaters can
never take that away from her.
