I think what NothingFails meant is that Britney isn't as vocally proficient as some of her contemporaries.

But vocal talent isn't everything. I know some of the best voices who produce some of the weakest music. To dismiss Britney's talent just because she isn't the best vocalist would be unfair. Britney actually writes quite a bit of her own music and she plays a pivotal role in the making of all of her albums, contrary to popular belief.

Truthfully, I that Madge was aiming at getting the support of Nicki's younger fanbase. It's a shame the song underperformed as I quite liked it. That "L-U-V Madonna, Y-O-U, you wanna" bit is super catchy.

Even the fact you're spending your time discussing about Britney shows she's still relevant, like it or not

I edited his reply to throw shade at Paulina. You know she has a Britney Spears RSS feed so each time someone mentions her in a post she gets a text to her phone.

maybe the problem is that some people here are above 25 or over 30 and for them/us Britney's never been that important or visible as a true force in music.

I mean, i do of course know her discography but only a handful of her songs really clicked with me.. which makes Britney just another hyped pop star for me. It's also no argmument saying that many celebrities praised her.. i mean Norah Jones (and Madonna) and probably many more bashed Mariah.. so does that mean she's no credible singer? I mean c'mon..

Oops, I didn't mean Britney is irrelevant. What I meant was discussing something doesn't automatically make it relevant. We could all sit here discussing Geri Halliwell's last solo album - doesn't make it important though.

Why people don't discuss about Simon & Garfunkel then? Simple, because they're no longer relevant

I'm a fan but i don't really like taking part in these kind of discussions. Britney is vocally talented? Of course not. You don't need to be an expert to get it. Is she a brilliant dancer? She once was but not anymore, at least not as she used to be. So i don't like spending my hours in defending her from the so-called haters or saying she hasn't a powerful voice and things everyone already knows.

There are probably people discussing S&G somewhere. UKMIX just happens to be flooded with pop fans though.

I don't actually think Britney is relevant anymore outside the US. In the UK, nobody cared about 'Femme Fatale' and the whole era was a big flop.

I still consider her to be a 21st century legend though, because she is a name that will be remembered for all time. But it looks like her career has peaked, meaning she wasn't on top for very long - roughly about 10 years.

LOL at the S&G thing

Btw i mostly agree on what you said. Brit has already peaked indeed but still people reckon her as one of the most relevant and popular celebrities overall

About being on top, Madonna was only on top for a short time, before some bigger stars came along.

Elvis, the same.

The Beatles, the same.

Mariah Carey, the same.

Celine Dion, the same.

The only star I can think of that sustained a 10 year+ period of being truly on top of the music world and above everyone else is Michael Jackson circa 1982-1995.

Britney spent about 2 years as the biggest star in music, before some other acts came along - every act in music has an expiration date. Fortunately, many can sustain a decent career and some even go on to make arguably their best music, whilst not performing to the same commercial standard as they might have done before.

But basically, the argument of relevance is such a bullsh!t one that when I see it, I just shake my head in amazement. Relevance is subjective, and actually - isn't all that.

Since my Beyoncé comment went down so well, I've got another one!

Gwen Stefani is the best pop star of the last 10 years and I need another solo album from her. Her debut is the best pop record EVER released IMO

'Love Angel Music Baby' was a solid record, filled with gems.

'The Sweet Escape' was a rushed mess.

Totally. 8-)

I think she's one bar down from Beyonce, in the overrated stakes, but three bars above Beyonce in the talent stakes.
Talent isn't just songwriting ability. Beyonce can dance circles around Alicia and sing circles around Alicia. I'm not talking about how 'special' their voices are but the actual skills they are able to do. Alicia sings quietly and belts. That's it.

I definitely think that Love Angel Music Baby was better than The Sweet Escape but there are some incredible tracks on TSE as well!

Namely Wind It Up (underrated!!!), The Sweet Escape, Early Winter (one of her best), 4 In The Morning, Yummy and Wonderful Life

Early Winter is perhaps my fave Gwen Stefani song. Wind it up was phenomenal also.

I don't class Gwen Stefani as a pop star though.

For me it seems her solo career is just a 'side project' rather than an all out, I am a pop star attempt....
