CHRISTMAS CATALOG/COMPREHENSIVE RUNS - 2008

Image

Image

The Christmas catalog chart champion of 2008, by a mile, was:
"Noel" by Josh Groban.
It was #1 for eight weeks, and reached #4 on the Comprehensive chart, where it spent 5 weeks in the top 10, and eight in the top 12 - by far the best single season showing yet for a Christmas album. Of course, "Noel" was #1 on the Billboard 200 for five weeks in its original release year (2007).
No other Christmas album managed to reach #1 on the Catalog chart this year.

For second place this season, I'll nominate:
"Christmas Offerings" by Third Day.
In its only noteworthy year on the Catalog chart, this 2006 release reached #2 for two weeks, and spent three weeks in the Comprehensive Top 40, topping out at #36.

Also reaching #2 and cracking the Comprehensive Top 40 this year:
"The Lost Christmas Eve" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra (unable to return to #1 for a fourth season, and made it to #34 Comprehensive), and
"A Charlie Brown Christmas" by Vince Guaraldi Trio (#2 for two weeks, and also reached #34 on Comprehensive).

Notes::
Christmas With The Chipmunks: Two albums on different labels with the same name charted simultaneously in the end of December, with the EMI/Madacy version of "Christmas With The Chipmunks" by The Chipmunks featuring David Seville charting only on the Comprehensive chart (it reached both Catalog and Comprehensive in 2007). The more popular version, on Capitol, continued strong sales in 2008.
Baby, It's Cold Outside: This Starbucks compilation reached the Comprehensive chart as a Comprehensive Only title back in 2005, running for four weeks and reaching #27. It reappeared in 2008 as a Catalog album.
One Is The Loneliest Number: 2008 was the first year since 1998 that only one Christmas album reached the top spot on the Catalog chart during the Christmas season, as "Noel" was #1 for eight weeks. The only other album to do the trick, "Miracles -- The Holiday Album" by Kenny G, did it three straight seasons from 1996-97 through 1998-99. (It was also #1 for 9 weeks in 1995-96, but Mariah Carey's "Merry Christmas" stole to the top spot at the end of that season.)
39 Is Fine: The 39 Christmas albums on the December 20, 2008 Catalog featured one more Christmas album than the most productive week in 2007-08, and was the most on one chart since the end of 1996, but was still well off the record of 45 set on December 21, 1996.
The Gang's All Here: On December 20 and 27, 2008, all 50 Catalog albums were among the top 200 sellers; this had also been accomplished for two weeks in late 2007.
On December 20, there were 52 catalog albums on Comprehensive; one of the extra two (The Chipmunks with David Seville's "Christmas With The Chipmunks" [EMI/Madacy], #197 Comprehensive, 51st on Catalog) was a Christmas album. "Christmas With The Chipmunks [EMI/Madacy]" made the Catalog chart back in 2007, but was unable to reach the Catalog top 50 in the 2008 season.
On December 27, 50 catalog albums exactly logged time on the Comprehensive chart.
Christmas Century: This year finally provided the first 100-week Christmas album on the Catalog chart. Vince Guaraldi Trio's "A Charlie Brown Christmas" reached the mark with 103 weeks by the season's end. It, along with Nat "King" Cole's "The Christmas Song", are the only albums (as of 2010) to reach the Catalog chart every Christmas season since 1991.
Evaluation of the year's new entries: Thirteen new Christmas entries reached the Catalog chart this year, with ten of them also spent time on the Comprehensive chart.
Other than "Noel", they were a rather nondescript lot this year, with only two of them other than "Noel" reaching the Catalog top 10: "Christmas Song" by Mannheim Steamroller (no surprise, it was a Top 10 hit in 2007), and "Christmas With You" by Rick Springfield (surprise! It pulled of its top ten week in January, well after Christmas).
But two other albums have since gone on to reach #1 on Catalog: "It's A Wonderful Christmas" by Michael W. Smith, and "The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection (EP)" by Taylor Swift.
As of 2010, five of these thirteen albums (Groban, Swift, Smith, Mannheim Steamroller and Starlite Orchestra) are still charting.

CHRISTMAS CATALOG/BILLBOARD 200 RUNS - 2009

Image

Image

The Christmas catalog chart champion of 2009, in a close race, was:
"Peace On Earth" by Casting Crowns.
It was #1 for three weeks, and reached #11 on the Billboard 200, where it spent 5 weeks in the top 20 and eight in the top 30.

For second place I'll nominate:
"Noel" by Josh Groban.
After its monster Catalog season of 2008-09, it returned to the top spot for three week (note, though, they were the 'power weeks' of just-pre-Christmas sales). It was only able to return to #14 on the Billboard 200 but it had a seven week Top 40 run.

The third place album, and the only other one to reach #1 this year, was:
"The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection (EP)" by Taylor Swift.
It had the most weeks in the Top 40 of the Billboard 200 with nine, but only two in the top 20; also, it topped out at #12, but was stymied for #1 on the Catalog chart that week by Casting Crowns (#11). She finally broke through to #1 at the end of the Christmas season in January.
These were the only three albums Christmas albums to make the Catalog top three this year.

Notes::
39 Is Fine: The 39 Christmas albums on the December 19, 2009 Catalog matched the most productive week in 2008-09; it was still well off the record of 45 set on December 21, 1996.
The Gang's All Here: The entire 50-position Catalog chart also placed on the Billboard 200 for four straight weeks from December 12, 2009 through January 2, 2010. This had also been accomplished for four previous weeks during a Christmas season (and also for two more weeks in September 2009).
On December 12, a record was set with 60 catalog albums on the Billboard 200. Three Christmas albums were among them: "'Tis The Season: Kids Christmas Sing-Along", a compilation; "Holiday Collection" by Kenny G, and "Christmas Duets" by Elvis Presley.
On December 19, there were 56 catalog albums on the Billboard 200; of these, Christmas albums included the original "A Very Special Christmas" compilation; "The Coolest Kidz Bop Christmas Ever!" by Kidz Bop Kids, and "Wintersong" by Sarah McLachlan.
On December 26, 51 catalog albums logged time on the Billboard 200 chart, and the extra one, "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer" by Burl Ives, was a Christmas album.
Finally, on January 2, 52 catalog albums reached the Billboard 200, and The Carpenters' "Christmas Portrait" was one of the extra two.
Of these, the three "extra" Christmas albums from December 19, "A Very Special Christmas", "The Coolest Kidz Bop Christmas Ever!", and "Wintersong", all did not reach the Catalog chart in 2009-10, but all had reached it previously.
Christmas Century: Mariah Carey's "Merry Christmas" became the second Christmas album to reach the 100-week mark on the Catalog chart. It spent just three weeks on the chart this year, but those were enough to bring its total to 101 weeks, second behind the 109 for "A Charlie Brown Christmas".
Evaluation of the year's new entries: Fifteen Christmas albums reached the Catalog chart for the first time this year, and all but one of them made the Billboard 200 as well. One other album (the original "A Very Special Christmas") reached the Billboard 200 without making the Catalog chart.
There were three that made the top 10 besides "Peace On Earth": Faith Hill's "Joy To The World" (#8), Straight No Chaser's "Holiday Spirits" (#9) and Enya's "And Winter Came..." (#10).
As of 2010, ten of these sixteen albums made the Catalog or Billboard 200 charts, but their longer-term prospects may be dim, as none of them were able to make the top 10. "Peace On Earth" came closest with a return to #12.

The Christmas catalog chart champion of 2010 was:
"My Christmas" by Andrea Bocelli.
It was #1 for four weeks centered around Christmas, and reached #11 on the Billboard 200, where it spent seven weeks in the top 40.

Second place goes to:
"Glory In The Highest: Christmas Songs Of Worship" by Chris Tomlin.
This was #1 for three weeks and became Tomlin's third #1 Catalog album of 2010.

Two other albums reached the top spot, as Christmas albums accounted for eleven weeks at #1 this season:
"The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection (EP)" by Taylor Swift was #1 for three weeks (two in November and one in December), and
"It's A Wonderful Christmas" by Michael W. Smith was #1 on October 30, the earliest a Christmas album has made it to the top spot.

The Gang's All Here - 2010-2011 Edition: In each of the four weeks in December, the entire 50-position Catalog chart also placed on the Billboard 200. There were 56, 58, 56, and 51 Catalog albums on the Billboard 200 during these weeks, respectively.

Ten different Christmas catalog albums made the Billboard 200 during one of these weeks without cracking the Catalog Top 50 in the same week:
(*) Christmas Live, Mannheim Steamroller (#53/#186 on Dec 4; #54/#190 on Dec 18)
Gold And Green, Sugarland (#54/#188 on Dec 4; #58/#199 on Dec 11)
(*) Honky Tonk Christmas, Alan Jackson (#56/#193 on Dec 4)
Holiday Collection, Kenny G (#52/#189 on Dec 11)
NOW That's What I Call A Country Christmas, Various (#53/#190 on Dec 11)
The Greatest Holiday Classics, Kenny G (#51/#185 on Dec 18)
If On A Winter's Night..., Sting (#52/#187 on Dec 18)
What A Night! A Christmas Album, Harry Connick Jr. (#53/#189 on Dec 18)
(*) Christmas Duets, Elvis Presley (#55/#190 on Dec 18; #51/#200 on Dec 25)
(*) I Wish You A Merry Christmas, Bing Crosby (#56/#195 on Dec 18)
Albums marked with an asterisk did not make the Catalog chart at all in the 2010-2011 season. Three of these made the Catalog chart previously. The exception is "I Wish You A Merry Christmas" by Bing Crosby, which as of the end of the 2010-2011 Christmas season is the only Christmas "catalog" album to reach the Billboard 200 but not the Catalog chart!

Other Notes:
Christmas Crush on Catalog: There were 41 Christmas albums on the December 18, 2010 Catalog chart, and an equal number on the December 25 chart; it was short of the record of 45 set on December 21, 1996, but these two weeks had the highest totals posted since 42 Christmas albums appeared on the December 28, 1996 chart. Also, the December 18 edition of the Billboard 200 featured an astounding 47 catalog Christmas albums, as six catalog albums below the last notch of the Catalog chart reached the Billboard 200, and they were all Christmas albums.
Christmas In March - And April: Retail store closures may have been a factor in Andrea Bocelli's returning to the Catalog chart for a week in late March with "My Christmas", and Sting charting for three straight weeks (and reaching #9!) on Catalog, and two on the Billboard 200, with "If On A Winter's Night..." in late April. With more Christmas albums charting in September 2011, this makes May, June, and July the only months that have not seen a Christmas album on the Billboard 200 or Comprehensive chart.
Christmas Century 3: "Christmas Eve And Other Stories" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra made it to 102 weeks on the Catalog chart, thus becoming the third Christmas album to reach the 100-week milestone, joining "A Charlie Brown Christmas" by Vince Guaraldi Trio (117 weeks) and "Merry Christmas" by Mariah Carey (109).
Home For The Holidays: A couple of long-absent country music entries returned to the charts this year. Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton's "Once Upon A Christmas", last seen on the Catalog chart in the 1994-1995 season, returned to the Catalog chart and Billboard 200. Alan Jackson's "Honky Tonk Christmas", which charted for two seasons in the mid-1990s and again in the 2007-2008 season on Catalog only, returned to the Billboard 200 but not to the Catalog chart.
Albums by Kenny G ("The Greatest Holiday Classics") and Starlite Orchestra ("Christmas Favorites"), as well as the "Polar Express" soundtrack, also returned to the charts after an absence of at least one season.
More The Merrier Christmas: Fifty-three different Christmas albums reached the Catalog chart this year, a record number. Three of these (Starlite Orchestra/Christmas Favorites, Burl Ives, "Polar Express") did not reach the Billboard 200. But four albums did reach the BB200 that did not make the Catalog chart, so the number was even higher there: 54 Christmas catalog albums appeared on the Billboard 200, also a record.
Farewell: Two albums that had been on the Catalog chart in seven previous Christmas seasons, including 2009-2010, were unable to return this year: the original "NOW That's What I Call Christmas!" collection, and "Christmas With The Rat Pack" by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin & Sammy Davis Jr. The latter was on a technicality, as it was re-released with enough new material to be considered a "current album" again in 2010; it would have returned to the chart if it had been eligible. We also said goodbye to "Christmas Songs" by Diana Krall featuring The Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra (four previous seasons) and Third Day's "Christmas Offerings" (three seasons).
Burl Ives' "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer" was able to return to the Catalog chart for just one week, extending its run of consecutive Catalog seasons to 13, but it was unable to return to the Billboard 200. Its streak of seasons returning to the top 200 sellers ended at seven.
The most successful album from last year which did not return this year was Yo-Yo Ma's "Yo-Yo Ma & Friends: Songs Of Joy And Peace", which charted for eight weeks on Catalog last year (six on Billboard 200) and reached #20 (#116).
Evaluation of the year's new entries: Fifteen Christmas albums reached the Catalog chart for the first time this year, and two additional albums ("I Wish You A Merry Christmas" by Bing Crosby and "Honky Tonk Christmas" by Alan Jackson) reached the Billboard 200 only as Catalog albums for the first time. "Honky Tonk Christmas" has a previous Catalog history, so of the sixteen truly new entries, two made it to #1, and four others made the top 10. Both the Bocelli and Tomlin albums seem set for long runs. Of the other top tens, "Christmas: 25th Anniversary Edition" by Mannheim Steamroller (#5) might have potential for long-term chart success, but the others do not; Sting's "If On A Winter's Night..." didn't reach the top 10 until April, and the other two (99 Most Essential, and Barbie Christmas Carol) seem like short shelf-life entries. Time will tell if any of the others can stick around. Sugarland's #21 peak for "Gold And Green" was somewhat disappointing.

Wow, I love this thread. I wonder which album spent the most seasons on the Billboard 200 before the Catalog chart took over.

Good question! I haven't exhaustively researched the answer, but it is very probably "December" by George Winston, which spent 178 weeks on the Billboard 200 starting in 1983 and ending in 1991, but reached only #54. In many years it charted well into the non-holiday season. (I think that number is right, it's close anyway, I have to check it.)

Another notable one is Bing Crosby's "Merry Christmas" which spent 89 weeks on the chart over many seasons and reached #1.

More later in an update.

CHRISTMAS CATALOG/BILLBOARD 200 RUNS - 2011

Image

The Christmas catalog chart champion of 2011, for the second straight year, was:
"My Christmas" by Andrea Bocelli.
It was #1 for three weeks centered around Christmas, and reached #16 on the Billboard 200, the highest position achieved by a catalog album this season.

Only one other album reached #1, which is my nominee for second best Christmas catalog album of 2011:
"The Gift" by Susan Boyle.
It was #1 for two weeks before Bocelli took over, and reached #29 on the big chart, a year after topping it in its original release.

The top of the chart was otherwise populated by a mix of first-time catalog albums and old classics, as described in the rundown below.

CATALOG CHART:

Code: Select all

The twelve albums marked with an asterisk did not make the Catalog chart at all in the 2011-2012 season.
Of these, eleven reached the Catalog chart in previous years; the only one which did not is "Christmas Songs By Sinatra" by Frank Sinatra. This joins Bing Crosby's "I Wish You A Merry Christmas" as the only Christmas catalog albums to make the Billboard 200 without ever reaching the Catalog chart.

In years past, it was common for Christmas albums on the Catalog chart to miss out on the Billboard 200, but this year, every Christmas album that reached the Catalog chart also reached the Billboard 200; in fact, there were only two individual occasions where albums reached the Catalog chart without making the Billboard 200 in the same week:
    O Holy Night, Jackie Evancho (#44/Nov 12)
    NOW That's What I Call Christmas! 4, Various (#46/Nov 12)
Other Notes:
Christmas Crush on Catalog: The number of Christmas albums in the Catalog top 50 topped out at 42 on December 24. It was short of the record of 45 set on December 21, 1996, but had the highest total since December 28, 1996 also had 42 Christmas albums.
Catalog Crest on Billboard 200: The December 17 version of the Billboard 200 featured 53 Christmas albums in Catalog status, even more than the 47 seen on December 25, 2010. That number of 47 was also surpassed on December 24 (with 52) and December 31 (with 48). The December 17 chart included all 40 Christmas albums on the Catalog chart, plus 13 more catalog Christmas albums not in the Catalog top 50.
Christmas In September: The demise of the Borders retail chain may have been responsible for sending two Christmas albums onto the Catalog chart (and Billboard 200) on September 24. One of these, Anuna's "Christmas Memories", never resurfaced; the other, Susan Boyle's "The Gift", got a jump on its successful 2011 season. ("The Gift" was also on the BB200 on September 17, but wasn't included on the Catalog chart.)
Please Come Home For Christmas: Several albums returned after a chart absence of a season or more, but none of these had a more successful season than "Christmas Extraordinaire" by Mannheim Steamroller. Last seen on the charts in 2008, it had a solid 8-week run this year with a peak in the Catalog top 20 and the Billboard top 100. Other albums to return this year included:
- Christmas Live, Mannheim Steamroller - returned to the Catalog chart for the first time since 2002-03. (It also reached the Billboard 200, but managed to do that in 2010-11 as well.)
- The Christmas Collection, Frank Sinatra - last on the charts in 2008-09; it reached its Catalog (#31) and BB200 (#116) peak positions this season.
- Christmas Classics, Bing Crosby - was on the charts once previously, in 2009-10; it reached a new peak on the BB200 (#147).
- Wintersong, Sarah McLachlan - returned only to the BB200, where it last charted in 2009-10; it has not been on the Catalog chart since 2008-09 (four seasons on BB200 and only two on Catalog).
- Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, Burl Ives - returned to the BB200, where it last charted in 2009-10; however, it missed the Catalog chart for the first time in 13 seasons.
- A Very Special Christmas (original collection) - returned to the BB200, where it also charted in 2009-10; it charted for 12 seasons on Catalog, but not since 2002-03.
- NOW That's What I Call Christmas! (original collection) - returned to the BB200, where it last charted in 2009-10; however, it was unable to return to the Catalog chart for the first time since 2009-10.
More The Merrier Christmas: A total of 51 different Christmas albums reached the Catalog chart, which was two short of the record set in 2010-11. However, 63 different Christmas catalog albums (including the 51 from Catalog, plus 12 others) reached the Billboard 200 this year, which flattened the old record of 54 set last year.
Farewell: Nineteen Christmas albums that made the Catalog chart in 2010-11, and thirteen Christmas albums that made the Billboard 200 that year, did not return to those charts this year. This includes five albums that made the Catalog top 10, and one which made #1 (Michael W. Smith's "It's A Wonderful Christmas").
Two long consecutive-season streaks came to an end on the Catalog chart, as Burl Ives' "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer" was unable to return for a 14th straight season, and Trans-Siberian Orchestra's "The Christmas Attic" was unable to extend its run to 13 straight seasons. Ironically, both albums made the Billboard 200 (even though "Rudolph" didn't do that last year). Other streaks of four or more years to end were "NOW That's What I Call Christmas! 3" and Michael Buble's "Let It Snow! (EP)" (both 4 straight seasons). Buble's EP had been a top 5 in each of those seasons, but was replaced this year with his blockbuster new Christmas album.
On the Billboard 200, the longest consecutive season string to come to an end was four seasons (for the "NOW! 3" and Buble albums previously mentioned).
Also, while hardly making a departure from the chart, "Christmas Eve And Other Stories" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra failed to return to the top 10 this year, peaking at #13. This ends the album's run of consecutive Christmas seasons reaching the Top 10 of the Catalog chart at an incredible 14 seasons. The irony is that it got higher this year on the Billboard 200 (#65) than last year (#71).
Evaluation of the year's new entries: Thirteen Christmas albums reached the Catalog chart for the first time this year, and two additional albums ("Alabama Christmas" by Alabama, and "Christmas Songs By Sinatra" by Frank Sinatra) reached the Billboard 200 only as Catalog albums for the first time. "Alabama Christmas" has a previous Catalog history, so there are 14 albums charting for the first time; of these, seven made the Catalog top 10, but only three reached the top 5, and one of these, "A Merry Little Christmas (EP)" by Lady Antebellum, did it late in the season after Christmas. The others that made the top 5 were "The Gift" by Susan Boyle (#1) and "NOW That's What I Call Christmas! 4" (#5).
On the Billboard 200 side, three of these albums reached the top 50, with Boyle (#29) making it the highest (NOW! 4 was #31, and Lady Antebellum #36). Some of the 2010 Christmas albums becoming catalog-eligible were disappointing; Jackie Evancho reached #60 after #2 last year (but she had another new Christmas album!), and Mariah Carey topped out at #88 after a #4 peak last year (market saturation?).
I would guess that the Susan Boyle, Lady Antebellum, and Mariah Carey (because of the name) selections are the best bets for success in future seasons.
