Best selling rap albums in the US by release date, 1987-2012

50 Cent has been away for a while, his last album barely made it to Gold, but I think this one will have an easier time (although he is probably the most likely to miss out on a certification from my whole list).

Nas is a legend and hasn't released anything new in a while. His 2008 album went Gold, his 2006 is close to platinum (it was at 800k in 2008/early 2009). The only one that did not get a certification was his last joint with Damian Marley, which again sold 250k+ even with much less buzz. So I would say Gold for Nas is all but guaranteed.

Waka Flocka Flame is at 320/330k+ from his last album, and that's the one he blew up with. Unless the singles are extremely poor, I do not see him selling less this around, and he should reach Gold, although not as fast as some of the other people on the list.

GOOD Music will go Gold for sure, and depending on the quality of the singles it has a shot at platinum. Remember it's a compilation so don't just add up the hype for all the artists together and use that to make predictions - to be honest, apart from Kanye, everyone else has trouble selling - Pusha T barely sold 30k from his last album, Common will struggle to reach 200k in the long run, so apart from Willypedia being an obvious Kanye fan I don't see a particular reason that GOOD Music will go platinum "easy".

B.O.B. might have a slow start, but with single power he will probably make it to Gold - although if the album is poor, he might stop at 3-400k.

Wiz Khalifa will no doubt go Gold, and probably reach platinum as well - lots of buzz, already beginning to establish a name for himself, don't see a problem there.

Ludacris has been away for a while, and he always has at least one sure hit under his belt, so I expect this one to reach Gold as well.

J.Cole will go Gold for sure, and also has a shot at platinum - his 1st album is already at 600k and still selling.

T.I. went platinum with every album before his last one, which only managed Gold. He has had several stints in prison, but I am confident that he will go Gold eventually with this one. Could take a while though, and I would place him in a "risk" category together with 50 Cent.

As for Rick Ross, let's be honest - he has been increasing his sales in recent years, so it's about time for a platinum record. Even if he doesn't achieve it, Gold is absolutely guaranteed.

Good choice, I like most of the albums. Enjoyed Trouble of My Mind! Zion I & The Grouch's album The Heroes in the Healing of Nation deserve to be there too.. Childish Gambino, Throne and ASAP are only ones I don't like.
^skycycle, I think 50 cent is done. Some say that artists have ups & downs, but I see nothing what can bring him back to fame now.
Dubious about Nas perspectives to reach gold, but I hope so, we'll see. Agree with other points, but hopefully BoB won't reach gold, maybe this will be a sign for him to make some real music.

The Eminem Show drops out, while Curtain Call returns. Dr Dre logs his 100th week inside the BB200 with '2001', while Eminem is only 3 away with 'Recovery'. Overall, a decent number of albums within the chart, even with the 3 modest debuts this week.

Next week we should get some Beastie Boys albums as well, I'm guessing at least the one from last year + Licensed to Ill and whatever they might have in stock around stores.

Another week in which we don't get the full numbers, so all the charts are updated from the BB200 and the Catalog charts.

Future's album falls drops only 58% percent in its 2nd week to #18 on the BB200, but rises to #5 on our chart, becoming the 6th hip-hop album of 2012 to sell more than 50k. We have three debuts this week - all of them fall short of our top 20, and we probably won't hear much more about them.

Next week we'll have B.O.B. enter here straight into the top 5 with projected first week sales of 70-75k, a bit less than his 2010 opening (84,000). That album needed almost exactly 8 months to reach gold, but it had 2 massive singles to back it up - "Airplanes" and "Nothin' On You". Billboard recently announced it has sold 597k as of April 30th this year, which explains the update in the 2010 chart above.

I know they usually round their numbers, but that usually only accounts for about a 500 copy difference at most. Don't know what's up with their numbers, because they also have it listed at #84. Hm...

They use the Current Albums chart, not the BB200, that's why their numbers are always a bit lower He debuted at 84 on that one, #90 on the BB200.

I checked the rest of their numbers, they are all rounded up correctly... Weird ;/

This isnt unusual, they put a wrong number on the list every now and then. Just a typo I guess. Guy was either tired, or sloppy.

Judging by the HDD numbers, "Licensed to Ill" re-entered the top 20 with sales around 18k this week. No sign of "Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 2" anywhere within the top 50, although I suspect it will be inside the BB200.

The first rap album to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart returns to the top 20 this week.

Following the death of Beastie Boy Adam "MCA" Yauch on May 4, the band's 1986 album "Licensed to Ill" reenters the tally at No. 18 with 19,000 sold according to Nielsen SoundScan (up 802%). The blockbuster set reached the top on March 7, 1987 and spent seven straight weeks at No. 1.

Beastie Boys' catalog of albums and songs saw a surge in sales in the tracking week that ended on May 6 (reflecting only two full days of sales after Yauch's passing). Collectively, the trio's albums sold 55,000 last week -- up 1,235% from 4,000 the week previous.

Beastie Boys also come back to the Billboard 200 with "Solid Gold Hits" (No. 51 with 8,000; up 806%), "Paul's Boutique" (No. 56 with 8,000; up 4,287%), "Hot Sauce Committee Part Two" (No. 107 with 4,000; up 1,150%), "Ill Communication" (No. 109 with 4,000; up 2,799%), "Check Your Head" (No. 124 with 4,000; up 2,727%) and "Beastie Boys Anthology: The Sounds of Science" (No. 141 with 3,000; up 3,303%).

In terms of digital songs, Beastie Boys sold a combined 151,000 downloads this past week -- up from 14,000 the week previous (a gain of 949%). Its best seller was the Billboard Hot 100 No. 48 single "Brass Monkey," with 15,000 (up 807%). The Boys' next largest was "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!) with 14,000 (up 304%). "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" was third (14,000; up 1,087%), followed by "Sabotage" (14,000; up 885%), "Intergalactic" (12,000; up 953%), "Paul Revere" (11,000; up 1,114%) and "So What'cha Want" (11,000; up 1,621%). Those titles all debut on the two-and-a-half year old Rap Digital Songs chart at Nos. 32, 35, 36, 39, 45, 48 and 50, respectively.

Beastie Boys' catalog of albums and songs could see big sales on next week's charts, after a full seven days of impact from Yauch's death is felt on the charts. Next week's tallies will reflect the sales week that ends on Sunday, May 13.

7 albums inside the top 200 with only 2 days of sales included - judging by the %, Hot Sauce Pt. 2 was selling 3-400 copies per week until last week. With a full week of sales we will see most of these again on the BB200 in seven days time.

B.O.B. opens with 76k+, coming along nicely at #4 on our chart. This is just 8k less than his previous LP two years ago - that one went on to a Gold certification. Pluto has fallen to #6, but will gain a spot next week by overtaking Odd Future.

OF barely missed the Billboard 200 this week, but sold around 2k - meaning they will be around 75 on the next chart, a number that Pluto will surpass. B.O.B. will overtake the Project X soundtrack with a second week currently projected around 24-27k - also enough to break 100k, the third album in the year to do it.

Don Omar debuts at #17 here - we will probably see him for a few more weeks before he leaves the BB200. Nicki Minaj sold another 20k and is approaching 500k fast. She is predicted to add another 18-21k to her total next week.
