THE 'WINTER' TAKES IT ALL: Enya spends her 283rd week at No. 1 on Top New Age Albums, thanks to the debut of "And Winter Came..." (Reprise) in pole position. This new holiday collection is the Irish singer's sixth album to top this chart. In chronological order, her half-dozen No. 1s are:
"Shepherd Moons," 29 weeks (1992)
"The Memory of Trees," 37 weeks (1996)
"Paint the Sky With Stars - The Best of Enya," 43 weeks (1998)
"A Day Without Rain," 93 weeks (2000)
"Amarantine," 80 weeks (2005)
"And Winter Came...," one week to date (2008)
Enya's 283 weeks at No. 1 represents five years and 22 weeks on top, spread out over 16 years.
On The Billboard 200, "And Winter Came..." is new at No. 8, giving Enya her fourth top 10 title. Her highest-ranked set on this chart is "A Day Without Rain," which peaked at No. 2 in October 2001. "Rain" contained the song "Only Time," which was heard frequently as a theme for TV coverage of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
The new challenger to AC/DC's European supremacy is Enya, whose "And Winter Came" (Warner Bros.) is in at No. 2 overall. The Irish AC singer enjoys prominent starts in Germany and Holland (both at No. 3), Switzerland (No. 5), the United Kingdom (No. 6), Italy (No. 7) and France (No. 9). It also climbs 18-4 in Flanders and 25-9 in Wallony. First-week U.K. sales of 35,000 for "Winter" compare to those of 55,000 for its predecessor "Amarantine" almost exactly three years ago.
Amarantine was her least sucessful album, and still had 80 weeks at #1 on the new age chart, more then any of her classic albums. Just shows that the New Age style is in decline... I can´t think of any famous New Age artist besides Enya. It´s kinda good that she has an entire genre for herself alone.lostprophet wrote:Chart Beat:THE 'WINTER' TAKES IT ALL: Enya spends her 283rd week at No. 1 on Top New Age Albums, thanks to the debut of "And Winter Came..." I guess that´s what she wanted by doing a not-so-explicit Christmas album. She will cash in the american X-mas market without putting off her new age/pagan fans, it´s very smart of hers...MJDangerous wrote:That's funny to see how well this album is performing with Christmas. In the US, it is going to sell an awful lot as a Holiday album, while in other countries, where Xmas albums are barely released, it is selling loads too since it is promoted as a normal new album![]()
I guess this is like a bonus gift for Enya since she is a new age artist, better for her
Enya's "And Winter Came" (Warner Bros.) is also down one place overall from its No. 2 debut, although it does manage a 5-3 climb in the Belgian region of Wallony.
