ASK BILLBOARD: X-Cellent Sales of Britney Spears
Hello, Gary!
As a fan of Britney Spears, I must say that I'm really happy that she has joined Fox's "X Factor," which means that we'll get to see her twice a week on live television. That's so exciting!
We fans know, according to widely-reported estimates, that she has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide. But, how many copies has she (and each of her albums) sold in the U.S.?
Cheers from a Brazilian Billboard.com 24/7 visitor,

Hi Saulo,
As the retooled "X Factor," with Spears and Lovato joining fellow judges Simon Cowell and Antonio "L.A." Reid, is set to return to Fox for the new fall season, let's look at the sales track records, per your requests, of the series' newcomers.
Here are Spears' U.S. album sales to-date:
10,500,000, "…Baby One More Time," 1999
9,200,000, "Oops!...I Did It Again," 2000
4,000,000, "Britney," 2001
3,000,000, "In the Zone," 2003
1,700,000, "Circus," 2008
1,400,000, "Greatest Hits: "My Prerogative," 2004
1,000,000, "Blackout," 2007 (Blackout passed 1 million in sales for the week ending July 24, 2011. It had stood at 990,000 sold at the start of last year)
755,000, "Femme Fatale," 2011
209,000, "The Singles Collection," 2009
131,000, "B in the Mix: The Remixes," 2005
24,000, "B in the Mix: The Remixes: Vol. 2," 2011
Spears' career album sales in the U.S. total 32.5 million. That makes her the 16th-best-selling album artist since the advent of SoundScan data in 1991.

If you add all her studio albums, Remixes, Compilations and DVDs is not impossible. Also remember sometimes when they talk about copies sold it is really copies shipped, that is what they care about.04wayne wrote:Well most with half a brain cell will know she hasn't come close to 100m album sales worldwide.
Oh 100mln copies is defo too much IMO. Her album sales are stand @ ~75-76mln. Remixes 1-1.5mln(max), DVD's ~5mln(max)Pmadrid wrote:If you add all her studio albums, Remixes, Compilations and DVDs is not impossible. 100 M sounds good to me and I am sure I have more than a half brain cell.
What is really sad is that for Britney numbers are always high but not for the rest.arab wrote:Oh 100mln copies is defo too much IMO. Her album sales are stand @ ~75-76mln. I think ITZ is very low, it should be close to 10M now. TSC is for sure close to 800K, I remember it was around 750K near to FF realease. FF has sold more than 1.5 M for sure, I think it has shipped more than 1.7. Greatest Hits albums normaly keep selling, I think it has shipped more than 6M, real sales are almost at 6M now.Bney wrote:My estimated album sale WW (Shipment):
-Baby One More Time around 26m
-Oops! I did it again around 22m
-Britney Around 12m
-ITZ around 8m
-Blackout around 3.5m
-Circus around 4m
-FF around 1.7m
-Greatest Hitz around 6m
-B in the mix around 1m
-B in the mix around 0.3m
-The single collection around 0.5m
Total: 26+22+12+8+3.5+4+1.7+6+1+0.3+0.5 = 85m
Can anyone approve this????
Those are heavily overestimated.-Baby One More Time around 26m
-Oops! I did it again around 22m
-Britney Around 12m
Don't you ever know that BOMT has gone Diamond in several countries?? Don't you ever realize that BOMT and OIDIA were really big WW. These two eras were like Adele's 21 era for Britney you know.Luminator wrote:Those are heavily overestimated.-Baby One More Time around 26m

Where on earth did BOMT ship 12 million copies outside the USA and OIDIA 10-11 million outside the USA?
And Britney surely didn't ship 7 million copies outside the USA.
No one will never ever know exact sale/shipment aside from her label (not even herself I guess). We only can estimate. However, many people/sources said this. I hope I could go back to BOMT era, so I'd have the best answer of her salesLuminator wrote:I would then like to get a breakdown from you that indicates that BOMT has shipped 26 million copies worldwide.
Obviously, you can add in around 1.5/1.6m copies for Femme Fatale and the single sales too, and you'll get to around 140m records sold worldwide.Wayne @ Vanity Edge wrote:

I know full well it doesn't include mastertones - it is IMPOSSIBLE to get a comprehensive list of mastertones for 99% of most artists and outside of the top 20 selling singles of the year, we know hardly anything [though certifications can tell us something, about some songs, in some countries].weare wrote:your estimation were not including ringtone/mastertone.
For example, Circus sold 5.5 million in a year WW (according to the IFPI report)
I'm sure she has passed 150 million records
