On Keri Hilson's "The Way You Love Me" music video“No matter how many records are bigger than mine - and I say this in the most humble way possible - there’s something about my record that relates to people in a whole different way, that a lot of other records don’t. I’ll take that over what some of these other guys have. For me, it’s been 12 years in the game, so something is working. This is the first album that I’ve made under no pressure. This album that I made …I was just happy to do music. I was happy that a company like Atlantic was like ‘Man, we could take this to a whole other level.’”
On how he market Keri as a manager“Well, Keri Hilson is a friend of mine and the first time I saw or heard the record was today (Wednesday, Dec 1st) when I was looking at on my phone on youtube. I’m looking on my phone and I’m like… (shocked face). I’m literally stuck. I don’t really know what to say, because…I get some of it. You have to stand out or you probably won’t stand at all,” he says cautiously. “I get some of it because that’s part of Keri Hilson’s problem, we don’t really know who Keri Hilson is. Am I afraid for her a little bit? Yes, I’m afraid, because once you jump out into that pool of water; you’re going to have to be able to swim. I just looked at it and thought, 'It’s tough to follow that.' It’s tough to keep that up. What’s the next song gonna say? I mean, my shirt is off in my video so I guess I really can’t say a whole lot about anybody.”
Maintaining his signature sound“I don’t know if she should have started cross over. As you noticed, with the Lil Wayne record, (Turnin’ Me On) what happened immediately once she put out the record that appealed to her audience? It was very popular. I think, had we started there, the progression would have been a little more natural to move into that other realm.”
Real music vs. "Radio" music“I just keep my music true to R&B. I keep it “relationship,” I keep it sexy. It’s involved in your personal life. I keep it very connected to the person that’s listening to it. I try not to sing above people. Everybody doesn’t have a million dollars. Everybody doesn’t have a phantom. Everybody doesn’t pop bottles. They might pop one bottle. I try to stay along those lines of being relatable, but at the same time being accomplished.”
Internet taking away the artisty in music“I would love to just have people sit at my piano and tell the truth all the time and just sing my songs. But the reality is that there’s not a lot of support there. With this thing that we do, we still have to figure out how to pay our bills and feed our kids. Although we don’t want to take the dumbed-down route and we don’t want to do the “radio” records, sometimes you have to. It’s not an identity crisis, it’s a food crisis. It’s a budget crisis, you know what I’m saying?”
Working with Drake on "Celebration"“Man, that damn internet. The internet is good and bad. I think the internet has taken the mystery out of music. You have U-Stream, Myspace, Facebook and Twitter. It all starts with the reality shows and all of these things. I would do a reality show, but I wouldn’t give them so much information. There are some things that should be left to the imagination. That’s what it was about back in the day. Women were trying to figure out who New Edition was. They would look at each member in the group and say ‘I wonder what Ralph is like? I wonder what Bobby is like?’ They didn’t know, so they had to hold on to whatever pieces they had. They had to come to the show and hopefully touch their hands, or show up at the hotel and catch a glimpse of them running. Or show up at the airport while they’re getting off the plane. There’s no more of that because the mystery is gone.”
“‘Celebration’ is a R&B record and I brought Drake into my world. It’s a very sexy record that could be played in the club, but it’s not a club record.”
I'd have to check that out!R_D wrote:I actually love that album, theres some good R&B on there. Especially tracks like "Why" & "Freekin Me"MusicandSoul wrote:I was talking about Intuition..
